Short answer: the Surface Laptop Ultra is worth considering if you develop software, run CUDA workloads, or need local AI models larger than a typical laptop GPU can hold. Its RTX Spark N1X platform combines up to 128GB of shared memory with a 6,144-core Blackwell GPU, but Windows on Arm compatibility, a high price, unverified battery claims, and an alarming early power-off result make it a specialist purchase rather than a safe recommendation for everyone.
What the Surface Laptop Ultra is
The Surface Laptop Ultra is a 15-inch premium laptop built around NVIDIA’s RTX Spark N1X platform. Microsoft offers configurations with up to a 20-core Grace CPU, a 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU, and 128GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. CPU and GPU draw from the same large memory pool, which is the machine’s defining advantage for local artificial-intelligence work.
That design changes the usual laptop trade-off. A conventional high-end notebook may deliver higher speed on a model that fits inside its dedicated GPU memory, while the Surface can load models that would not fit at all. The result is not universal speed leadership; it is access to larger workloads in a portable system.

| Configuration listed by Microsoft | Price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 18-core CPU, 24GB memory, 512GB storage | $2,599.99 | Entry configuration; the smallest memory pool is the least suitable for large local models. |
| 20-core CPU, 128GB memory, 1TB storage | $5,899.99 | Top consumer configuration; provides the most room for model weights, context and development tools. |
The 15-inch touchscreen supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color, and Dolby Vision IQ. Ports include HDMI 2.1b, three USB-C/USB4 ports (one with Magnetic Connect), USB-A, an SD card reader and a headphone jack. Wireless connectivity is Wi-Fi 7, and the camera is 1080p.
Storage is upgradeable. Microsoft publishes repair guides and replacement parts, while StorageReview identifies removable options including a 512GB PCIe Gen4 SSD and 1TB or 2TB PCIe Gen5 SSDs. Microsoft says fast charging requires at least a 115W Surface power supply or a USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at 115W or higher. Charger bundles vary by region, so check the package sold in your market.
Why its memory matters for local AI
StorageReview tested a 20-core system with 128GB of LPDDR5-9400, allocating 64GB to the GPU and 64GB to the system. The GPU allocation can be adjusted to as much as 96GB. In that review, the Surface ran gpt-oss:20b and Qwen3.6-35B-A3B at approximately 58–89 tokens per second, depending on the model and test.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
Those figures matter because model capacity is often the first barrier. A laptop built around an RTX 5090 has a 24GB GPU-memory ceiling in the cited comparison. On models that fit within that ceiling, StorageReview found the RTX 5090 laptop about 2.3 times faster. On models larger than 24GB, however, the Surface was the only tested system that could load them and reach usable generation speed.
| Workload situation | Surface Laptop Ultra | RTX 5090 laptop in the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Models that fit within 24GB | Runs them, but is slower in the cited tests | About 2.3× faster |
| Models above a 24GB GPU-memory limit | Can load larger models using its shared pool | Could not run the same larger models |
Microsoft’s intended use is local agents and private workloads: routine tasks can stay on the machine while larger jobs move to the cloud. In practice, the benefit depends on your framework, model quantization, context length and whether your tools support this Arm-based CUDA environment. More memory does not automatically make every model fast.
Independent performance results
StorageReview tested the 128GB model on Windows 11 Pro 26H1 Arm64. It recorded a 6,963 Cinebench 2026 multi-core score, a 206.4-second LLVM 21.1.4 build, and 122GB/s of memory bandwidth. These are results for that specific review configuration, not guarantees for every memory or power setting.

In MLPerf examples, the system produced 48.9 tokens per second for the Data Analyst Agent and completed the SWE Agent workload end to end in 46.0 seconds. The figures show why developers and AI practitioners may accept the machine’s compromises: it can keep substantial models and heavily threaded builds local instead of repeatedly moving them to a remote service.

Windows 11 Pro runs natively on Arm64. Traditional x64 applications can run through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer, but compatibility still depends on whether the application, driver, plug-in and surrounding tools have suitable Arm support.
- Native Arm builds generally offer the best performance and lowest friction.
- Emulated x64 applications may work well, work with limitations, or fail when they depend on unsupported drivers or extensions.
- Anti-cheat systems, specialist engineering software, hardware utilities and plug-ins deserve specific checks before purchase.
- Developer toolchains that include native CUDA components should be tested with the exact versions you plan to use.
Storage performance also has an important qualification. StorageReview measured 14.1GB/s sequential reads from the Gen5 SSD, but approximately 300,000 4K random IOPS through NTFS and BitLocker, compared with 1.67 million IOPS from the raw device. Encryption and the operating-system storage path therefore matter for workloads dominated by small random reads and writes.

The serious stability warning
StorageReview reports that an all-core OpenBLAS LU solve at N=20000 powered the tested laptop off three times on October 14 at 95°C. An earlier review unit reportedly failed the same workload. The reviewer believes the pattern points to power delivery or firmware protection rather than simple overheating.
This is one laboratory’s early result, not a measured failure rate for all units. It is nevertheless a substantial reason to delay a purchase used for long, uninterrupted compiles, numerical solves or rendering until firmware updates and follow-up testing establish whether the behavior is resolved. Buyers who proceed should use a return window long enough to run their own sustained workloads.
Battery life: claim, not independent result
Microsoft’s battery figures come from preproduction hardware and software tested in September 2026. Under controlled conditions—150-nit brightness, Wi-Fi, and either local video playback or browsing twelve websites—Microsoft claims up to 15 hours of local video or 12 hours of active web use.

StorageReview had not completed independent battery, display, keyboard or broader chassis testing in the cited review. The published figures should therefore be read as first-party maximum claims, not as a confirmed everyday-runtime result. A high GPU allocation, emulation, model loading and sustained compilation can all produce different endurance.

Against an RTX 5090 laptop
The decision is capacity versus throughput. Choose the RTX 5090 class when your models fit within 24GB and you prioritize the highest token speed in the cited tests. Choose the Surface when running a model is more important than maximizing speed and your workload needs more than 24GB of GPU memory. Also compare sustained-power behavior, noise, weight and the compatibility of your Windows software stack.
Against a MacBook Pro
A MacBook Pro comparison should focus on the specific AI frameworks you use, memory capacity, native application availability, battery measurements, display requirements and total price. The Surface’s case is strongest when CUDA compatibility and very large shared memory are central; a different platform may be easier if your tools are already optimized for it. The available evidence does not establish a directly comparable battery or display result for either machine here.

Against a conventional Surface Laptop
The Ultra’s premium buys a discrete-class RTX GPU, far more parallel compute and a much larger memory ceiling for AI and development. A conventional Surface Laptop remains the more rational choice for office work, browsing and portability when those workloads do not use the GPU. Paying for RTX Spark solely for ordinary productivity is difficult to justify.
Who should buy it—and who should wait
Buy it when
- You regularly run local language models or agents that exceed a 24GB GPU-memory limit.
- Your work depends on CUDA, large compilations or heavily threaded development.
- You can validate Arm64 support for every critical application, driver and plug-in.
- You accept early-platform risk and have a strong retailer return policy.
Wait when
- You need independently verified battery life before spending several thousand dollars.
- Your workflow relies on broad, trouble-free x64 compatibility or specialist anti-cheat software.
- Your main workloads fit in 24GB and maximum inference speed matters more than model size.
- You require proven stability under every sustained all-core workload.
Verdict
The Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra is a specialist workstation disguised as a premium Surface laptop. Its unified-memory design genuinely expands what can run locally: up to 96GB can be assigned to the GPU, and the tested 128GB model handled AI workloads unavailable to a 24GB RTX 5090 laptop. That capability is compelling for developers, AI practitioners and creators with large local models.
For everyone else, the recommendation is conditional. Prices reach $5,899.99, Windows on Arm still requires compatibility checks, independent battery testing was pending, and repeated power-offs under one demanding OpenBLAS test need a firmware or follow-up explanation. Buy now only if the memory capacity and CUDA-oriented workloads directly justify those compromises; otherwise, waiting for stability and battery evidence is the safer decision.
