A Microsoft Store app is defined by where it is distributed; a desktop app is defined by the kind of Windows software it is. They are not mutually exclusive: traditional Win32, WPF, and WinForms desktop apps can be packaged for the Store or listed there with a publisher-provided EXE or MSI installer. To understand how an app installs and updates, check its delivery path and package—not just whether it has a Store listing.

What the terms mean

“Microsoft Store app” usually means an app a user finds or installs through the Microsoft Store. That phrase identifies a distribution channel, but does not by itself tell you how the app was built, what package format it uses, or who manages its updates. Think of it as an answer to “Where did I get this app?” rather than “What kind of software is it?”

“Desktop app” usually means software made for the Windows desktop, often a traditional Win32 application. WPF and Windows Forms (WinForms) programs are desktop apps too. Desktop describes the app category or experience; it does not tell you whether the program is packaged or where you got it. A desktop app may be installed from a publisher’s website, delivered as a package through the Store, or listed in the Store while retaining a publisher’s installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Windows app guidance draws a separate distinction for UWP, or the Universal Windows Platform. UWP is a specific app model, not another name for every app in the Store. Microsoft Learn puts the packaging difference this way: “First off, all UWP apps are packaged, and run in an AppContainer. But for desktop apps, things are more flexible.” Desktop apps can be packaged or unpackaged, and can have different runtime behaviors.

MSIX is a Windows packaging and deployment format, not an app model. It can package UWP apps as well as Win32, WPF, and WinForms desktop apps. So “MSIX app,” “desktop app,” and “Store app” answer different questions: what packaging technology is used, what kind of app it is, and how it is distributed. Those terms can describe the same app at the same time. For example, a Win32 desktop app could be packaged as MSIX and distributed through the Microsoft Store.

Keeping these dimensions separate avoids a common source of confusion. A Store listing tells you something about the app’s route to users, but not necessarily whether it is UWP, Win32, WPF, or WinForms. The app model and package tell you more about its technical form, while the submission route helps explain who hosts the installation files and who delivers updates.

How the categories overlap

A desktop app can come from the Microsoft Store. Developers can submit desktop software as an MSIX package, or create a Store listing that directs users to the publisher’s existing MSI or EXE installer. In the latter case, the Store listing is still a route to the app, but the publisher’s installer—not a Store-hosted MSIX package—does the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That overlap means the familiar contrast between “Store apps” and “desktop apps” is misleading. A more useful comparison separates three layers:

  • App type: for example, UWP or desktop software such as Win32, WPF, or WinForms.
  • Package and installation method: for example, MSIX or an MSI/EXE installer.
  • Distribution route: Microsoft Store or another route chosen by the publisher.

Knowing only that an app is in the Store does not establish which app model or installer it uses. Likewise, “desktop app” does not mean it must be downloaded outside the Store. The same desktop program can be made available through different routes, and those routes may lead to different installation and update arrangements even if the underlying app is the same.

It is also useful to distinguish an app’s listing from its payload. With a Store MSIX submission, Microsoft hosts the app package and provides Store signing for that package. With a Store listing that uses a publisher’s MSI or EXE, the publisher hosts the installer and remains responsible for signing it and relevant binaries as required by Microsoft’s submission guidance. The listing may be in the Store in both cases, but the installation files and responsibilities differ.

What changes for installation and updates

The practical difference often comes down to who supplies the installation mechanism and who is responsible for updates. These are the two common Store delivery paths for desktop software:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Detail Store submission using MSIX Store listing using the publisher’s MSI/EXE
Package or installer hosting Microsoft provides Store hosting for the package. The publisher hosts the installer.
Signing Store signing is provided for the package. The publisher must sign the installer and relevant binaries as required by Microsoft’s submission guidance.
Update delivery The Store and operating system manage update delivery. Microsoft’s Win32 distribution guidance says the OS automatically checks for updates every 24 hours for this packaged Store path. The app or publisher manages updates. The 24-hour Store check does not apply as a general update schedule to this path.
Installation path The user installs the submitted MSIX package through the Store. The user obtains the publisher’s existing installer through the Store listing and follows that installer’s process.
Possible app types UWP and several kinds of desktop apps can be packaged. Existing Win32 software can use its original EXE or MSI installation path.

The 24-hour detail is specific: Microsoft’s guidance says the operating system automatically checks for updates every 24 hours for packaged MSIX Store submissions. It is not a promise that every app listed in the Store is updated on that schedule, nor does it describe publisher-managed EXE/MSI updates. Those updates depend on the app or publisher’s own mechanism.

In the publisher-installer path, the Store listing does not take over the installer’s job. The publisher supplies and hosts the installer, and the user follows that installer’s process. The application or publisher also determines how updates are provided. If you are unsure, look to the app’s own update mechanism or the publisher’s instructions rather than assuming the Store will deliver an update because the listing is there.

These are distribution and deployment differences, not proof that one app type is inherently safer, simpler, faster, or more capable. The app’s behavior depends on its technology, package, configuration, and publisher. A Store listing alone does not tell you who controls the update process if it points to a publisher-managed installer.

Installation and update responsibility are useful questions because they affect what a user should expect after clicking Install. But they are not the only differences worth checking. Hosting tells you where the package or installer comes from; signing identifies who has signed the installer or package under the relevant submission path; update responsibility tells you who maintains the installed app over time. Together, these facts give a more practical picture than the Store label by itself.

What MSIX can mean for the Windows experience

MSIX gives Windows a managed package and deployment model. Microsoft describes benefits that include a clean install and uninstall path, automatic updates, and package identity. Package identity can enable Windows integration that depends on an app being recognized as a packaged app.

Packaging does not mean every app runs with identical restrictions or inside the same kind of sandbox. UWP apps run in an AppContainer, while desktop apps have more flexible packaging and runtime choices. Depending on the app and its configuration, packaged desktop software may use features such as package identity and virtualization, but its behavior can vary. Do not assume that every MSIX app has the same access limits as a UWP app, or that every desktop app is unrestricted.

The word “packaged” therefore answers a different question from “sandboxed.” Microsoft’s distinction is that UWP apps are packaged and run in an AppContainer, while desktop apps have more options for packaging and runtime behavior. MSIX can package several app types, but that fact alone does not make all those apps behave alike. You need the specific app type and configuration to understand its capabilities and Windows integration.

For users, the practical takeaway is to consider the particular app and delivery path. A managed package can make installation and removal more consistent, but the listing and package details still matter when you want to know what updates the app receives or how it integrates with Windows. If a feature depends on package identity or another Windows integration, confirm that requirement for the specific app instead of relying on the words “Store,” “desktop,” or “MSIX” alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the terms as a simple ladder from least to most capable. The packaging method can affect deployment and identity, but the app’s framework, configuration, and publisher also matter. The available facts do not support a blanket claim that MSIX apps perform better, that desktop apps are less secure, or that every packaged app has the same access restrictions.

How to check which kind of Store delivery an app uses

A Store listing is not always enough to identify the installation path. Use the following checks before installing, or when diagnosing an update question:

  1. Check the publisher. Confirm that the Store listing names the publisher you expect. For a publisher installer, check that the installer and any support or update instructions come from that publisher. Publisher identity is relevant in both routes, but the publisher has a direct hosting and signing role for the MSI/EXE listing path.
  2. Observe the installation flow. If installing from the listing launches or downloads a separate EXE/MSI installer, the publisher’s installer is handling the installation. If the Store installs the submitted package directly, that is consistent with the Store MSIX route. The installation flow helps identify the mechanism, although it does not, by itself, tell you every detail of the app’s framework.
  3. Find out who supplies updates. For the Store MSIX path, update delivery is managed through the Store and operating system. For a publisher-provided MSI/EXE path, consult the app or publisher’s update mechanism; do not assume the Store manages updates simply because the app has a listing there. The 24-hour automatic check applies to the packaged Store submission guidance, not generally to publisher-managed installers.
  4. Separate package format from app type. If you need to know whether the software is UWP, Win32, WPF, or WinForms, look for technical information from the publisher or Microsoft. The Store presence and the installer extension alone do not answer every question about the app’s framework or runtime. MSIX can package both UWP and multiple desktop app types.
  5. Check Windows integration needs. If a feature depends on package identity, installation behavior, or a particular integration, verify that requirement for the specific app and configuration. Do not infer it solely from the word “desktop” or “Store.”
  6. Confirm who hosts and signs the installation files. For the MSIX Store submission, Microsoft provides package hosting and Store signing. For a listing using the publisher’s MSI/EXE, the publisher hosts and signs the installer and relevant binaries as required by Microsoft’s submission guidance. This is another way to distinguish the delivery routes when the installation flow is not clear.
  7. Check support for the route you plan to use. If a publisher offers more than one installation route, use its support guidance to understand which one it maintains and how that route receives updates. The listing’s presence in the Store should not be treated as proof that every route has the same update or support arrangement.

These checks are useful whether you are choosing a new app or trying to work out why an installed app did not update through the Store. Start with the actual route used to install it, then identify the update owner. If the app was installed through the publisher’s EXE/MSI, the publisher’s mechanism—not a general assumption about Store behavior—is the relevant place to check.

Which option should you choose?

If the same app is available through more than one route, choose based on the installation and update experience you want, as well as the publisher’s support guidance. A Store MSIX submission offers Store-hosted package delivery and Store/OS-managed updates. A Store listing using the publisher’s installer preserves the publisher’s MSI/EXE installation and update path. Neither route is a universal indicator of app quality or trustworthiness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing two apps—or two ways to install the same app—check these details rather than relying on labels:

  • What app type or framework does the publisher identify?
  • Is the app packaged as MSIX, or does it use an MSI/EXE installer?
  • Who hosts the package or installer?
  • Who signs the installer and relevant binaries?
  • Who provides updates, and through what mechanism?
  • Does the app have package identity or specific Windows integration requirements?
  • Is the publisher the one you intend to install from, and does it provide support for this distribution route?

A useful comparison is to ask the same questions for each option instead of relying on a single label. Two apps may both appear in the Store but use different delivery paths. Two desktop apps may both be Win32 software while one is packaged as MSIX and the other uses an EXE or MSI. The route can affect hosting, signing, and updates even when the app category remains desktop.

For a user who wants the Store and operating system to manage delivery of updates, the Store MSIX route is the one that matches that description. For a user or organization that relies on a publisher’s existing MSI/EXE installation process, the listing that uses that installer retains that process. Neither choice should be made on the assumption that one format is inherently more trustworthy or more capable. Check the publisher and support details, then choose the route that fits the app’s actual delivery and update arrangements.

Common misconceptions

“Everything in the Microsoft Store is UWP.”

No. The Store distributes apps, including desktop software. Win32, WPF, and WinForms apps can be packaged with MSIX, and desktop apps can also be listed using a publisher’s existing installer.

“A Store listing means the Store manages all updates.”

No. That applies to the Store MSIX submission path described above. When a listing uses the publisher’s MSI/EXE installer, the app or publisher manages updates.

“Packaged means the same thing as sandboxed.”

No. UWP apps run in an AppContainer, but desktop apps have more flexible packaging and runtime choices. Packaging and app model are related but distinct facts.

“An app with a Store listing must use a Store-hosted package.”

No. A listing can use the publisher’s existing EXE or MSI installer. In that route, the publisher hosts the installer and the publisher’s installation and update mechanisms remain important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“If two apps are both desktop apps, they install and update the same way.”

Not necessarily. Desktop describes a broad app category, not a single package format or distribution route. One desktop app may use MSIX through the Store; another may use a publisher-hosted MSI or EXE. Check the actual installer and update owner.

How can I tell whether a Store app uses MSIX or a publisher installer?

Check the installation flow and publisher information. A separate EXE or MSI installer indicates that the publisher’s installer is handling installation; a Store-installed submitted package is consistent with the MSIX route. Also check the app’s update instructions to confirm who supplies updates.

Does a Store listing make an app automatically safer or better?

A Store listing alone does not establish an app’s capabilities, update owner, or trustworthiness. Check the publisher, package or installer, signing responsibility, and support and update arrangements for the specific delivery path.
