To make Sticky Notes ask before deleting, open the app’s Notes list, choose the Settings gear, and switch Confirm before deleting to On. The control is in Sticky Notes itself, not in Windows Settings. If the app is showing only one note, use that note’s … menu and select Notes list before opening Settings.

What the delete-confirmation setting does

Sticky Notes treats closing a note and deleting a note as different actions. A confirmation prompt is associated with the delete action, so enabling it gives you an extra check before a note is removed. It does not change what the X button does, and it does not move the option into the Windows Settings app.

Microsoft’s documented instructions apply to Sticky Notes for Windows 10. The description of the X button is specifically identified for Sticky Notes version 3.0 and later on Windows 10, so do not assume identical behavior on every platform or every app release.

Open the correct Sticky Notes settings page

When the Notes list is already visible

The Notes list is the view that displays your collection of notes. Its upper-right corner contains the Settings gear. That is where the delete-confirmation control is located.

When Sticky Notes opens directly to one note

A single-note view does not show the same Settings location. Select the note’s … (ellipsis) menu, then choose Notes list. Once the list appears, the Settings gear is available in the upper-right corner.

Enable “Confirm before deleting” step by step

  1. Open Sticky Notes.
  2. If one note fills the window, select its … menu and choose Notes list.
  3. In the upper-right corner of the Notes list, select the Settings gear.
  4. Find Confirm before deleting and switch it to On.

The setting is now enabled for the Sticky Notes installation in which you changed it. Microsoft’s support instructions show this control as a toggle; there is no separate Windows Settings path to configure.

Delete a note after the prompt is enabled

To test or use the protection, open the note you intend to remove, select its … menu, and choose Delete note. Sticky Notes should ask you to confirm before completing the deletion when the toggle is on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also documents deletion commands from the Notes list. Regardless of which documented delete entry point you use, treat the action as destructive: Microsoft Support states, “Note deletion is permanent. It cannot be undone.” A confirmation prompt is an opportunity to stop, not a recycle bin or recovery feature.

Closing a note is not the same as deleting it

The most common source of confusion is the X button. In the documented Windows behavior for Sticky Notes version 3.0 and later, clicking or tapping X closes the note and leaves it saved in the Notes list. It is not the delete command, so it should not be expected to trigger a deletion warning.

Action What it does in Microsoft’s documented Windows behavior Should you expect a delete prompt?
Close (X) Closes the open note and keeps it in the Notes list. No. This is a close action, not deletion.
Delete note from the note’s … menu Removes the note. Yes, when Confirm before deleting is on.
Delete command from the Notes list Starts the note-deletion operation from the list view. Use the enabled confirmation setting as the safety check.

If pressing X produces no warning, that behavior is consistent with the documented distinction. To remove a note, use Delete note instead of closing it.

Keyboard shortcuts: close and delete remain separate

Microsoft’s Sticky Notes keyboard-shortcut reference lists Ctrl+D for deleting the current note and Ctrl+W for closing it. These shortcuts mirror the action distinction in the interface: one invokes deletion and the other closes the note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shortcut reference does not establish how the confirmation toggle behaves with every keyboard route. Therefore, do not infer from the shortcut list that a prompt has been tested for a particular keyboard workflow. If avoiding accidental loss is critical, use the visible … menu and verify that the confirmation appears before relying on a shortcut.

Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective warning

The toggle is not visible

First check that you are in the Notes list rather than inside an individual note. The documented route to the control starts at the list’s Settings gear. From a single note, select …, choose Notes list, and then look in the upper-right corner for Settings.

If the interface does not match these labels, identify the app and Windows scope before assuming the option has moved. Microsoft’s related help identifies the instructions as Windows 10 guidance, and the X-button detail is tied to version 3.0 and later. The available controls can therefore differ outside that documented combination.

There is no warning when I click X

That is expected under the documented Windows behavior: X closes and saves the note to the Notes list. It does not delete the note. Use the note’s ellipsis menu and choose Delete note when deletion is actually intended.

I deleted the wrong note

Microsoft says a deleted note cannot be undone or recovered through Sticky Notes. The confirmation setting cannot restore a note after the deletion has completed. Before accepting a prompt, read the note content and make sure you selected the intended item; after deletion, recovery is not provided by the documented feature.

I enabled the setting but am testing the wrong action

Check that your test uses a delete command rather than a close command. Open a disposable note, select its … menu, and choose Delete note. Testing with X only verifies closing behavior and will not demonstrate the delete warning.

A safe workflow for managing notes

  • Use the Notes list to identify the note before opening a destructive command.
  • Open the candidate note and read enough of it to confirm that it is the one you intend to remove.
  • Choose Delete note from the ellipsis menu, not X, when you want deletion.
  • Read the confirmation dialog before accepting it.
  • Remember that Microsoft documents deletion as permanent and not undoable.

This workflow separates navigation, review, and deletion. It is especially useful when several notes have similar titles or when a note contains information that is not stored elsewhere.

Where Microsoft documents the behavior

Microsoft’s Troubleshoot Sticky Notes article documents the route from an individual note back to the Notes list, the Settings location, the Confirm before deleting control, and the Windows 10 version 3.0-and-later explanation of the X button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The separate Delete a sticky note article lists deletion methods and warns that deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. For keyboard use, see Microsoft’s Keyboard shortcuts for Sticky Notes, which lists Ctrl+D for deleting and Ctrl+W for closing. Microsoft’s Sticky Notes help page identifies the related help scope as Windows 10 guidance.

Key points to remember

  • The delete warning is controlled in Sticky Notes’ Notes list Settings, not in Windows Settings.
  • If Sticky Notes opens to one note, use … > Notes list to reach the Settings gear.
  • X closes a note in the documented Windows 10 behavior; Delete note removes it.
  • Microsoft describes deletion as permanent, so the prompt is a last check rather than a recovery mechanism.
  • The documented version and platform scope is Sticky Notes 3.0 and later on Windows 10 for the specific X-button behavior.
