Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC), generally available as of October 7, 2026, let developers and IT administrators define what an AI agent or generated workload can access, then enforce those limits outside the workload. MXC offers different containment options for quick process-level tasks, desktop automation, and Linux-first tools. It is separate from Windows 11’s user-facing agent workspace, which remains an administrator-enabled preview feature.
What Microsoft Execution Containers do
MXC is an execution layer for specifying resource boundaries—such as permitted files and network destinations—and selecting a suitable container to enforce them while code runs. The policy is defined outside the workload, so an agent or generated code cannot expand its own permissions.
Microsoft says MXC can contain model-generated output, plugins, tools, an agent harness, or an entire agent. Logan Iyer, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Windows Platform + Developer, summarized the principle in the October 7, 2026 Windows Developer Blog: “An agent cannot be its own security authority. It must run within a boundary defined by the developer or organization and enforced independently of the agent itself.”

The choice of boundary depends on the workload—for example, a coding tool running against a repository may benefit from a responsive process boundary, while an automation agent that needs a desktop may need its own session.

Which MXC container fits the workload?

These are different isolation choices, not interchangeable product tiers. A process boundary emphasizes lightweight execution; a session boundary separates interactive surfaces such as the desktop and clipboard; WSL supports Linux-based workflows. Select based on the resources and interaction the task requires.
MXC is not the Windows agent workspace
Microsoft also describes an “agent workspace” in Windows. Support defines it as “a separate, contained space in Windows where you can grant agents access to your apps and files so they can complete tasks for you in the background while you continue to use your device.” It uses a separate agent account and session, allowing an agent to work in parallel with the user.

The two concepts have different audiences and availability. MXC is the developer and administrator execution layer for defining and enforcing workload resource policies, and Microsoft announced it as generally available on October 7, 2026. The Windows agent workspace is a user-facing experimental feature, and Microsoft Support still labels it preview. Microsoft describes the initial workspace preview as more efficient for common operations than a full virtual machine such as Windows Sandbox; that is Microsoft’s characterization, not a benchmark or evidence that the workspace provides equivalent isolation to a VM.

How to enable the experimental Windows agentic feature
To enable the workspace-related experimental features on a supported Windows installation, an administrator must turn on the setting. Microsoft’s current Support page gives this path:

- Open Settings > System > AI Components > Experimental agentic features.
- Enable Experimental agentic features. The setting is off by default.
- Review access requests for each agent rather than treating feature enablement as blanket permission to every folder.
Microsoft says preview build 26100.7344 and later includes default containment for Windows On-Device Registry agent connectors and permissions for connectors to run. The workspace itself remains preview, and build-specific behavior can change.
How to control what an agent can access
For agentic apps such as Copilot, Microsoft lists six commonly used profile folders that agents may request: Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos. On builds 26100.7344 and later, the documented per-agent choices are:

- Allow Always — grant that agent continuing access to the folder.
- Ask every time — require a decision each time the agent requests access.
- Never allow — deny the agent access to the folder.
These choices apply to the listed folder requests; they should not be read as a guarantee that no other files are accessible. Microsoft notes that agent accounts can also access folders available to all authenticated users, such as public profiles. Consider shared locations when deciding what to store there and when reviewing permissions.

MXC’s policy-outside-the-workload design is intended to prevent an agent from granting itself additional access. The available materials describe the design and options, but do not establish that every prompt-injection attack, workload compromise, or sandbox escape is prevented. Containment reduces the potential impact of a workload; it is not a claim of complete protection.

Microsoft says the Windows preview experience and its security model are still being refined. Its Support documentation lists known issues for build 26220.7262 and later: Windows may not sleep while Copilot has active conversations, and shutdown or restart may warn that another user is still using the PC. Enterprise users with Endpoint Privilege Management may also see leftover Intune-managed agent profiles after a Copilot Actions conversation closes. These are documented issues for the specified builds, not established behavior across all Windows 11 systems.
Cloud PC availability
Microsoft’s newer October 7, 2026 announcement says Windows 365 support for MXC is generally available. Windows 365 for Agents is described as an Intune-managed Cloud PC separate from the user’s machine. This updates Microsoft’s June 2, 2026 platform overview, which had described the MXC SDK as early preview and Windows 365 for Agents as generally available with future MXC integration.
