Microsoft is testing a faster warm-launch path for supported single-instance Windows apps. Instead of starting a short-lived intermediary process that redirects the request to an app instance already running, Windows can notify that existing instance directly. That removes a small piece of launch overhead, but it is not a switch that every Windows 11 user can enable.

A separate Windows 11 feature, Low Latency Profile (LLP), temporarily raises processor frequency during interactive actions. LLP is responsible for the broader performance claims being reported, while accelerated launch is an app-and-API change. Confusing the two leads to unrealistic expectations about what an update—or a configuration tool—can do.

What extra process is Windows 11 getting rid of?

The process is an intermediary used when a single-instance app is launched while its main instance is already open. The normal launch request starts a second process, which discovers the existing instance, forwards the notification, and exits. Microsoft’s accelerated-launch design lets Windows deliver the launch notification directly to the running instance instead.

This applies to warm launches: the application is already running, so Windows only needs to bring it forward or pass it the new file, link, protocol, or other activation request. It does not eliminate every process involved in opening an application, and it does not make unsupported multi-instance or single-instance implementations faster automatically.

What changes for developers

Microsoft documents accelerated launch as experimental and limited-access. Support can vary by application, launch source, and Windows version. An app must continue to maintain its own single-instancing behavior and a conventional fallback path. Developers should use Microsoft’s documented support check, test every activation route they support, and verify behavior on systems where the API is unavailable.

  • Keep the normal single-instance handoff logic.
  • Check whether the current Windows build and launch source support accelerated launch.
  • Test cold launches separately from warm launches; removing the redirect process affects the latter.
  • Handle unsupported systems without assuming the accelerated notification will arrive.

Is Low Latency Profile the same as accelerated launch?

No. They operate at different layers and solve different latency problems.

Accelerated warm launch Notifies an already-running app instance directly instead of starting an intermediary redirect process. Developers of supported single-instance Windows apps and users of those apps. Experimental, limited-access API; support depends on the app, launch source, and Windows version. The app must implement support.
Low Latency Profile Temporarily increases processor frequency and prioritizes interactive work for roughly one to three seconds. Windows 11 users performing actions such as launching an app or opening Start, File Explorer, or a context menu. Distributed through Controlled Feature Rollout. It is not normally exposed as a Settings or Control Panel toggle.

Microsoft vice president and member of technical staff Scott Hanselman described LLP as a standard operating-system technique: “All modern operating systems do this, including macOS and Linux. It’s not ‘cheating’; this is how modern systems make apps feel fast: they temporarily boost the CPU speed and prioritize interactive tasks to reduce latency.”

How much faster could Windows 11 feel?

Windows Central reported maximum improvements of up to 40% for application launch times and up to 70% for shell interactions such as opening Start or a context menu. Those are reported upper bounds for LLP, not guarantees. Results depend on processor, power-management behavior, storage, background work, thermal limits, and the specific action being measured.

The reported LLP behavior lasts about one to three seconds—long enough to cover a short interactive burst, not a sustained performance mode. A machine that is already responsive may show little visible change, while a system constrained by frequency ramp-up or competing background tasks may benefit more. The accelerated-launch API has a different measurement target: warm-launch latency caused by the intermediary handoff.

Why can’t users force-enable the faster launches?

Microsoft is using Controlled Feature Rollout for LLP, so eligible Windows 11 devices do not receive it simultaneously. A staged rollout lets Microsoft monitor compatibility and performance before expanding availability. The feature is reported to be invisible to users and not user-toggleable in Settings or Control Panel.

Reports have mentioned an unofficial configuration-tool workaround, including tools commonly used to expose hidden Windows features. That approach is not a supported guarantee: a hidden feature may depend on a particular build, prerequisite, server-side assignment, or unfinished code path. Enabling a flag can also make troubleshooting harder if the behavior changes between updates. There is no documented, generally safe switch that forces LLP on for every PC.

What Windows 11 users should do

  1. Install supported Windows 11 updates. Keep cumulative and feature updates current so the device can receive the rollout when Microsoft assigns it.
  2. Do not infer availability from another PC. Controlled Feature Rollout can make two otherwise similar systems behave differently for a period of time.
  3. Measure the right scenario. Compare cold launches with warm launches, and distinguish app startup from shell actions such as Start or File Explorer.
  4. Avoid relying on unofficial force-enable instructions. They are not a substitute for Microsoft’s rollout and may stop working after an update.

What developers should do now

Developers targeting the accelerated path should consult Microsoft’s accelerated-launch documentation (last updated 26 September 2026), implement the documented support check, and retain their existing single-instance coordination. Test launches from each relevant source—such as file associations, protocol links, and taskbar or Start activation—because support is not universal across launch paths.

Teams should also instrument warm-launch latency separately from application initialization. Removing the intermediary process reduces redirection overhead; it cannot fix slow startup work performed by the app itself, blocked resources, network dependencies, or expensive initialization on the already-running instance.

What this means for the headline claim

Microsoft is removing a pointless extra step in a narrowly supported warm-launch design, but that API is not a universal Windows switch. The larger user-facing responsiveness story comes from LLP’s short CPU-frequency boost and interactive-task prioritization. Users must wait for Microsoft’s staged rollout, while developers—not end users—control whether an application can take advantage of accelerated launch.
