If a feature flag behaves differently than expected in ASP.NET Core, check how its filters are registered, which filters are eligible for the evaluation context, and whether the feature requires any or all filters to match. Microsoft Feature Management’s documented defaults can explain these surprises without treating them as bugs.
Check service lifetimes before debugging flag logic
AddFeatureManagement registers feature-management services, including filters, as singletons by default. That is appropriate for many applications, but it can cause a dependency-injection lifetime error or unsuitable lifetime behavior when a filter depends on a scoped service, such as request-scoped state. Microsoft provides AddScopedFeatureManagement for that case; it registers the feature-management services, including filters, as scoped instead. Use it when the filter’s dependencies require a scope, rather than changing every application’s registration by default.
See Microsoft’s .NET feature flag management guide for registration and ASP.NET Core integration details.

Understand what makes a feature enabled
Feature evaluation is not necessarily a check that every listed filter returns true. Microsoft’s .NET guide describes evaluation as traversing the feature’s filters until one enables the feature. The API reference says the feature definition’s RequirementType defaults to Any: an enabled filter can therefore be sufficient. Set the requirement deliberately when the intended rule is that every required condition must match.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is also an override: if FeatureDefinition.Status is Disabled, the feature remains disabled regardless of the rest of its definition. When the result surprises you, inspect the status, requirement type, filter list, and evaluation context together. See the FeatureDefinition API reference and the .NET guide.
Match contextual filters to the context you pass
A contextual filter declares the type of context it accepts. When calling IsEnabledAsync<TContext>, the caller supplies that context; the compatible contextual filter is then eligible to evaluate the feature. If a filter seems not to run, verify both the generic context type and the object supplied by the caller.

Aliases can be shared by a non-contextual filter and contextual filters, subject to Microsoft’s selection rules: only one applicable filter can match a given context type. Without a supplied context, the non-contextual matching filter is selected when present. With a context that matches a contextual filter, that contextual filter is selected. A single filter type cannot implement multiple feature-filter interfaces; doing so causes an ArgumentException.
These rules make an alias a selection point, not a guarantee that every implementation sharing it will run. The .NET feature flag management guide documents contextual evaluation and filter selection.

Know which built-in filters are registered
AddFeatureManagement automatically adds the PercentageFilter, TimeWindowFilter, and ContextualTargetingFilter built-ins. The non-contextual TargetingFilter is registered by calling WithTargeting(). If a targeting rule does not behave as expected, first identify which filter your feature uses and whether it is registered.
Targeting in ASP.NET Core
The default ASP.NET Core targeting-context accessor uses HttpContext.User. It obtains the user ID from Identity.Name and groups from role claims. If your application uses a different identity model, provide a context accessor that represents your users and groups correctly.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Targeting without an HTTP request
Console applications and background work do not have an ambient HTTP user to target. Pass the targeting context explicitly through the contextual evaluation API instead of assuming the web accessor can provide one. The same principle applies anywhere the needed identity is not available from the current request.
Recurring time windows
A recurring time window requires both Start and End bounds. Microsoft documents daily and weekly recurrence patterns; do not assume a start-only or end-only window can recur. Consult the .NET guide for the supported configuration details.

Use snapshots for consistency within a request
IFeatureManagerSnapshot provides a snapshot of feature state to ensure consistency across a given request. Use it when request handling needs a consistent feature answer rather than potentially evaluating the flag repeatedly through the regular manager.
The documented guarantee is request-scoped. It does not establish that a value stays fixed across separate requests, application instances, or an arbitrary length of time. See the IFeatureManagerSnapshot API reference.
Choose the control that fits the release decision
Feature flags can serve distinct purposes; a simple switch, gradual rollout, and experiment are not interchangeable operating modes.
| Approach | Best fit | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Switch | Turn a feature on or off | Availability of the feature |
| Rollout | Expose a feature gradually or to a chosen audience | Exposure by percentage, audience, or schedule |
| Experiment | Compare alternatives | Assignment of variants for comparison |
Azure App Configuration can provide a centralized repository for feature flags managed separately from application deployment, and Microsoft documents evaluation telemetry as part of its feature-management capabilities. It is an option when configuration ownership or centralized management matters; a library-level configuration may be enough for an application’s needs. Microsoft’s overview also marks .NET targeting, time window, custom filters, AND/OR requirement type, variants, telemetry, and Application Insights integration as generally available, as well as recurring time window for .NET. Those platform-support statuses come from the overview last updated February 4, 2026; check its current matrix before relying on another language’s status.
For the control types, central management, telemetry, and platform matrix, see Microsoft’s feature management concepts and Feature Management Overview.
