Microsoft is expanding Copilot Notebooks into a more capable, reference-grounded workspace, while Google’s 2026 NotebookLM upgrade adds advanced reasoning, code execution and research outputs. The products now overlap as AI research and productivity tools, but their official feature descriptions do not establish a head-to-head winner: the practical choice depends on where your material lives, which sources and outputs you need, and what your account can access.

What are Copilot Notebooks?

Copilot Notebooks is a workspace for collecting selected reference material and asking Copilot questions grounded in that material. Microsoft describes it as “an intelligent, scoped workspace.” You create a notebook, add supported files or other references, and ask Copilot to summarize or analyze documents, answer questions, or help draft material based on the notebook context. Microsoft’s Copilot Notebooks support page explains the workflow.

The scoping is important: Microsoft says Copilot uses the references added to the notebook, rather than automatically drawing on a user’s entire OneDrive, email, Teams chats or the open web. That gives users control over which material informs an answer, but it also means the notebook is not, by default, a general-purpose web research session.

What changed in the notebooks experience?

Microsoft’s release notes describe a redesigned Overview with clearer summaries and key insights, plus one-click creation of artifacts. They also document interactive mind maps that show topics and relationships and let users inspect nodes, and Copilot Notebooks availability in OneNote on the web. Microsoft deploys Copilot features gradually through a safe deployment model, so a documented feature may not appear in every account or tenant at once. Microsoft 365 release notes track the changes.

How is Copilot Notebooks different from NotebookLM?

Both products let users work with a collection of sources, but the announced emphasis differs. Microsoft positions Copilot Notebooks around selected references and work within its productivity ecosystem. Google’s June 8, 2026 announcement, updated July 16, describes NotebookLM enhancements aimed at more agentic chat and advanced reasoning, including code execution in a secure cloud computer for each notebook, help discovering relevant web sources, and downloadable research outputs. Google said the upgrade was moving NotebookLM to Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity. Google’s NotebookLM announcement gives its feature and rollout details.

Practical question Copilot Notebooks NotebookLM upgrade announced by Google in 2026
What is the main source model? Answers are grounded in references added to a notebook; supported reference types depend on the account and license. Google described working with provided sources as well as discovering relevant web sources.
What notable capabilities were documented? Overview summaries and insights, artifact creation, interactive mind maps, and OneNote on the web; availability can roll out gradually. Advanced reasoning, code execution in a secure cloud computer, source discovery and downloadable outputs.
Which account access was announced? Microsoft documents access for eligible Copilot Chat and Microsoft Copilot users, with different feature limits; eligible consumer plans are also listed in support documentation. Google’s announcement initially named Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Expanded Access, with broader expansion planned.
Is there an independent comparison proving which is better? Not established in the reviewed official documentation. Not established in the reviewed official documentation.

The comparison is about capability and access, not measured quality. The cited vendor announcements do not provide an independent, same-task Copilot-versus-NotebookLM benchmark or a like-for-like current price comparison. A feature list alone cannot show which product produces more accurate or useful results for a particular job.

What Google’s evaluation figures do—and do not—show

Google reported that its upgraded NotebookLM system had an average win rate above 65% across its five core evaluation dimensions, a 69.9% win rate in large-document analysis, and a 78.2% win rate in advanced web research and source discovery. These are Google’s own side-by-side evaluations of the upgrade against its previous NotebookLM system. They are not independent results and do not compare NotebookLM with Copilot Notebooks.

Can Copilot Notebooks use web sources?

Microsoft says users can reference specific web URLs, but the source types available depend on the license. Its support documentation lists Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF, Copilot pages and Loop files, as well as OneNote pages and notebooks. The licensing comparison qualifies several reference types—including URLs, Teams chats, meeting materials, SharePoint and OneDrive sources, and OneNote notebooks—as requiring a Microsoft Copilot work or school license rather than Copilot Chat. Do not assume that every account can add every source type.

That is different from treating the notebook as an unrestricted web search. Microsoft’s described model is to add references to the notebook and ground responses in those selected materials. Google, by contrast, specifically announced NotebookLM assistance with finding relevant web sources; the announcement’s initial access terms should not be read as a guarantee of current eligibility.

Which Microsoft 365 Copilot license do I need?

Microsoft’s published work-or-school comparison says eligible Copilot Chat users and Microsoft Copilot users can both access Notebooks, but their source limits and available features differ. It lists up to 50 sources per notebook for Copilot Chat and up to 300 for Microsoft Copilot. The Microsoft Copilot tier also lists suggested references, Researcher or Deep Research, Audio Overviews, live capture and additional reference types. Microsoft support separately names Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium and Pro as eligible consumer plans. Check Microsoft’s current eligibility and feature details for your account type before choosing a plan; the work-or-school limits should not be assumed to describe consumer plans.

Microsoft’s licensing comparison is available at Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing; consumer and notebook details are on its Copilot Notebooks support page.

Can Copilot Notebooks create charts or reports?

Microsoft says Copilot Notebooks cannot create images or data visualizations directly in the notebook. Its release notes do describe one-click artifact creation, but that should not be taken to mean the notebook itself can generate charts or visualizations. Google’s NotebookLM announcement describes downloadable charts and visualizations, along with reports and structured files.

Presentation and visual outputs PowerPoint, charts and visualizations

These are capabilities described in Google’s announcement; they do not establish that every format is available to every user today.

What source and recovery limits should users know?

Microsoft says grounding is limited to up to 300 files. If a user adds a shared SharePoint folder or site, Copilot selects up to 300 relevant files the user can access; Microsoft advises adding a specific file directly when it must be included. This limit is distinct from the license comparison’s 50-versus-300 source allowance, so check both the source-count rule and the grounding behavior for the workflow you plan to use.

Microsoft also states that deleting a notebook or Copilot page is currently permanent and cannot be undone, while recovery features are in development. These are support-page statements and may change as the product evolves.

Which tool should you choose?

  • Choose based on where the source material lives. Copilot Notebooks may be the more natural fit when work depends on Microsoft 365 files, pages or collaboration material and the account supports those references.
  • Check whether you need source discovery. Microsoft describes a notebook grounded in material you select; Google’s 2026 announcement explicitly includes finding relevant web sources.
  • Match the output to the task. Microsoft’s documented additions include summaries, insights, mind maps and artifact creation. Google described a broader set of downloadable report, data, presentation and visual outputs.
  • Verify eligibility and rollout. Feature availability depends on license or plan, account type and deployment timing; Google’s initial rollout was also tied to named offerings.
  • Do not infer a winner from vendor claims. No independent, like-for-like evaluation or current price comparison is established by the cited official sources.
