Microsoft Edge now lets you set an explicit RAM limit, not just rely on automatic tab suspension. In Edge 125 and later, Resource controls can operate during PC gaming or continuously with an Always setting. When Edge reaches the limit, it tries to reduce memory use by putting more tabs to sleep or discarding them. That can keep an active workload responsive, but it can also mean more reloads and slower performance if the cap is set too low.

What Edge’s resource controls actually do

Resource controls are a user-set ceiling for Edge’s memory use. Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance, then enable the resource-control feature. The default mode is intended to manage RAM while PC gaming; select Always when you want the limit applied during ordinary browsing as well.

Edge does not promise to keep every tab alive under that ceiling. When memory pressure reaches the limit, it may suspend inactive pages or discard them so the operating system can reuse the RAM. Microsoft warns that reaching the limit can produce “increased page reloads with more tabs being slept and discarded.” The setting is therefore a tuning control, not a guarantee of a fixed memory footprint.

Where to watch the limit

Edge’s Browser essentials sidebar shows resource-control information, including the RAM limit and sleeping-tab memory details. Use it after changing the cap to see whether the browser is suspending tabs frequently enough to affect your workflow.

Sleeping tabs: the automatic part of the system

Sleeping tabs pause inactive pages so active work can reclaim memory and CPU. Microsoft’s support guidance says tabs normally go to sleep after two hours of inactivity, although the timeout can be changed in Edge’s performance settings. Critical sites can be kept active through those settings when suspension would interrupt a task.

Microsoft reported an average of 83% memory saved per sleeping tab in its December 6, 2022 update. An earlier April 7, 2022 update reported 85% average memory saved and 99% average CPU saved per sleeping tab. These are Microsoft measurements from its own updates, not independent Edge-versus-Chrome tests. Microsoft also said 1.38 billion tabs were put to sleep in September 2022 after the feature’s deployment in Edge 105.

  • With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
  • The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
  • 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
  • 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop

When a sleeping tab resumes, Microsoft says it can return without reloading. A tab that has been discarded because Edge needs to meet the RAM limit is more likely to reload when you return, so sleeping and discarding are different experiences even though both reduce resource use.

How to make Edge use less RAM

  1. Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance.
  2. Turn on Edge’s resource controls.
  3. Leave the default gaming-focused mode if you only want a cap while playing PC games, or choose Always for continuous control.
  4. Open the Browser essentials sidebar and observe the reported limit and sleeping-tab savings during normal work.
  5. If important pages are being suspended, add them to the performance settings’ keep-active exceptions.
  6. Raise the limit or disable the control if reloads and delays outweigh the RAM benefit.

Edge versus Chrome’s memory features

Chrome has a comparable automatic mechanism called Memory Saver. In Chrome, go to Settings > Performance > Memory Saver and choose Moderate, Balanced or Maximum. Chrome deactivates tabs that are not being used; inactive tabs reload when you reopen them.

Capability Microsoft Edge Google Chrome
User control Explicit RAM limit; mode can apply during PC gaming or Always (Edge 125 and later) Memory Saver levels: Moderate, Balanced and Maximum
Inactive-tab behavior Sleeping tabs pause pages; resource pressure can lead to discarding and reloads Inactive tabs are deactivated and reload when reopened
Monitoring Browser essentials sidebar reports the limit and sleeping-tab information Performance settings provide Memory Saver controls
Published vendor figures Microsoft reported 83% average memory saved per sleeping tab (December 6, 2022) and 85% average memory saved plus 99% average CPU saved (April 7, 2022) Google reported a potential reduction of up to 40% and 10GB less memory for Chrome’s desktop performance settings at launch in 2022

The percentages are not an apples-to-apples benchmark. Microsoft’s figures describe sleeping-tab savings, while Google’s figures describe Chrome’s desktop performance settings; each is a vendor claim measured under its own conditions. They do not establish that Edge uses less RAM than Chrome for every site, extension set or workload.

Why tabs reload after you set a limit

Reloads are the expected trade-off when the cap is too restrictive for the number of tabs, extensions and active web apps you use. Edge responds to the limit by sleeping or discarding more pages. Reopening a discarded page requires the site to load again, which can lose an unsaved state in poorly designed web apps and adds wait time.

  • Increase the cap if reloads happen during ordinary multitasking rather than only under a known memory spike.
  • Use Always selectively: a gaming-only limit avoids imposing the same pressure during office or research sessions.
  • Keep essential sites active through performance settings, while allowing reference tabs and background pages to sleep.
  • Check extensions and site behavior before blaming the browser; an extension that keeps pages active can defeat suspension savings.

Should you switch from Chrome?

Edge’s differentiator is visibility: it exposes a RAM-cap control alongside automatic sleeping tabs. That can appeal to heavy multitaskers who want a predictable memory budget, especially on a computer where gaming or other applications compete with the browser.

There is no neutral, current side-by-side benchmark in the cited official material proving that Edge consumes less RAM than Chrome across workloads. Both browsers now suspend inactive tabs. Make the decision on your own sites and extensions, watching reload frequency, compatibility and battery life rather than treating a vendor percentage as a universal ranking.
