Both browsers sync browser data through their provider accounts, but the sign-in decision works differently. Microsoft Edge connects cross-device sync to an account signed into an Edge profile. Chrome uses a Google Account for browser sync, yet Google explicitly allows you to sign in to services such as Gmail without signing in to Chrome itself.
That distinction affects what stays local, what is copied to other devices, how work and personal browsing are separated, and what happens when you clear data. Edge offers per-category sync switches, while Chrome lets you manage synced data, history and tabs separately and offers a passphrase option for certain data. Neither browser is a universal winner; the better choice depends on your account boundaries and sync requirements.

These behaviors come from Microsoft’s Edge sync instructions and Google’s help pages on Chrome sign-in and data, Chrome sign-in and multiple profiles. Labels and availability can vary by browser version, operating system, region and whether an organization manages the device.

Signing in to a provider’s website proves your identity to that website. Browser sync is a separate browser-profile function that copies selected browser information between devices. Confusing the two can lead to accidental mixing or to the assumption that a laptop is synchronized when it is not.

What signing in means in Edge
In Edge, the documented route is to open the profile area or go to Settings > Profiles > Sign in, choose an account and select the sync option. The selected account becomes the profile’s sync identity. Devices using that same Edge profile can then receive the categories you have enabled. If you sign in with a different account, you are working in a different sync container even if the browser installation is the same.
What signing in means in Chrome
Chrome lets you sign in from Chrome settings or from a Google web service such as Gmail. Google states that Chrome sign-in is optional when you sign in to a Google service. Therefore, entering a Gmail account in a web page does not by itself prove that Chrome sync is active. You must inspect Chrome’s own profile and sync state.
When Chrome sign-in is disabled, bookmarks and passwords can still be saved on that device. Signing in to Chrome changes the storage choice: selected Chrome data can be saved to the Google Account and made available on other devices where you sign in with the same account.
How to set up and control Microsoft Edge sync
Desktop setup
- Open Edge and select the profile icon near the address bar, or open the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Open Profiles, then choose Sign in. On some versions the profile pane presents the sign-in action directly.
- Select the Microsoft account that should own this browser profile. Check the account name carefully if both work and personal accounts are available.
- Choose the option to sync when Edge presents it. If you skipped that prompt, open Settings > Profiles > Sync.
- Review each sync category before leaving the page. Do not assume every category is enabled just because the profile is signed in.
Edge categories you can review
Microsoft’s guide lists favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries and payment information among the syncable data. The page also refers to related items, and the visible list can change with the Edge release. In Settings > Profiles > Sync, use the individual toggles to limit synchronization to the categories appropriate for that profile.

- Favorites: useful when you need the same saved sites on several computers.
- Passwords: convenient across devices, but sensitive enough to justify checking the account and device access first.
- History and open tabs: helpful for continuing work, but potentially revealing on a shared or borrowed computer.
- Extensions and settings: reproduce browser configuration, which can be unwanted on a tightly controlled work setup.
- Autofill and payment information: reduce typing but deserve particular care on devices used by more than one person.
Switching Edge profiles
Use the profile icon to switch to another existing profile, or choose the option to set up a new profile. Give profiles clear names such as “Personal” and “Work” and verify the account shown after every switch. A profile switch changes which favorites, history, extensions and sync identity you are using; it is not merely a visual theme.
Stopping sync and deleting Edge data
Signing out stops future synchronization for that profile. It does not automatically answer what should happen to data already stored locally or in the account. Microsoft specifically warns that deleting data while signed in and syncing removes that data from synced devices. Before using a clear or delete command, decide whether you intend to remove one local item, remove the cloud copy, or propagate the deletion to every synchronized device. If you only want to stop future syncing, sign out or change the category switches rather than starting a deletion flow.
How Chrome sign-in and sync work
Sign in without making Chrome a sync client
Google’s sign-in model is useful when you want Gmail but not browser synchronization. Open the Google service in a tab and authenticate there. When Chrome asks whether to turn on Chrome sign-in, decline if you want the browser profile to remain independent. You can continue using the service while keeping browser data local, subject to the normal behavior of the website itself.

Turn on Chrome sign-in
- Open Chrome and select the profile icon, then open the profile or sync settings.
- Choose the option to sign in to Chrome and select the intended Google Account.
- Review the confirmation screen. Make sure the account is the one you want associated with this profile, not simply the last account used in Gmail.
- Open Chrome’s sync settings and choose which information should be synchronized. The exact wording differs by platform and release.
- Repeat the account check on every computer, phone or tablet where you expect the same data.
Chrome data that can be synchronized
Google confirms that Chrome can save bookmarks, passwords and other Chrome data to the signed-in Google Account. Its help information identifies history and tabs as data whose synchronization can be turned on in settings. Because the available switches and automatic choices can change, inspect the current sync page rather than relying on an old screenshot or assuming that every category is enabled.

If you do not sign in to Chrome, bookmarks and passwords can still be stored locally on that device. That arrangement is useful for a one-off computer, a test profile or anyone who wants Google services without placing browser data in a cloud account. It also means that a device failure or reset can remove the only copy unless you have another export or backup method.
Chrome’s passphrase and personalization controls
Google says you can choose a passphrase to encrypt certain synchronized data so Google cannot read that protected data. The passphrase does not necessarily cover every type of Chrome information, so check the current Chrome wording before treating it as blanket encryption. Losing the passphrase can also affect your ability to restore protected sync data.
When Web & App Activity is enabled, Google says Chrome history saved to the Google Account may be used to personalize Google products and services. If that use is not appropriate for your account, review Google’s activity controls and Chrome’s sync settings separately; turning off one is not a substitute for checking the other.
Turning Chrome sync off
Use Chrome’s profile or sync settings to sign out or turn off synchronization. Google’s Chrome sign-out instructions explain the available choices. Read the confirmation carefully: a sign-out can remove synchronized data from the device while leaving it in the account, or it can offer a choice to clear local copies, depending on the version and platform. Treat any “clear” option as a data-management action, not as a harmless pause button.

Profiles: the practical way to separate work and personal browsing
What a profile separates
A browser profile has its own set of browser information. In Chrome, Google lists bookmarks, history, passwords and settings as profile-specific. Edge likewise uses profiles to organize account identity, sync choices and browser data. Separate profiles reduce accidental autofill, bookmark and history mixing because each context opens its own data set.

Profiles are not a security boundary
Google cautions that anyone who can access the device can switch profiles and view that profile’s information. A profile therefore organizes data; it does not replace a password-protected operating-system account, screen lock, disk encryption or a properly managed shared-device policy. Use a separate device account when another person must not be able to open the profile.
Switching profiles safely
- Finish or save work in the current profile before switching.
- Open the browser profile menu and select the named destination profile.
- Check the account avatar or email shown in the new window.
- Before entering a password, uploading a file or accepting a sign-in prompt, confirm that you are in the intended profile.

Work and school accounts: what changes on managed Chrome
Personal Chrome installations do not automatically behave like an organization’s managed browser. Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation describes policies that administrators can use to disable, enable or require browser sign-in, restrict allowed account patterns and require separate profiles for managed identities in supported environments. These settings apply only when an organization has deployed the relevant management configuration; they are not defaults for every Chrome user.

For a managed computer, follow the organization’s account and profile instructions instead of trying to work around a sign-in requirement. If a policy blocks personal accounts, creating another local profile may not be permitted or may violate company rules. Edge’s consumer sync guide does not establish equivalent organizational-policy behavior, so do not infer that a personal Edge setup mirrors a managed Chrome deployment.
Troubleshooting common sign-in and sync problems
“I signed in to Gmail, but Chrome is not syncing”
- Open Chrome’s profile menu and check whether Chrome itself shows the Google Account as signed in.
- Open sync settings and verify that synchronization is enabled and that the needed category, such as history or tabs, is selected.
- Check whether an administrator has disabled or restricted Chrome sign-in.
- Confirm that the other device uses the same Google Account and a compatible profile.
“My Edge devices show different favorites or passwords”
- Compare the account displayed in the Edge profile on each device.
- Open Settings > Profiles > Sync and compare category toggles.
- Check whether one device is signed out, offline or using a different profile.
- Allow time for the devices to reconnect before making edits on both devices; simultaneous conflicting changes can make the intended copy unclear.
“I turned sync off and my local data disappeared”
Sign-out and clear-data dialogs can offer different choices by version and platform. Reopen the profile settings and read the exact confirmation text. If you need to preserve local data, export or copy it before accepting a removal option. For Edge, remember Microsoft’s warning that deleting while syncing can remove the item from other synchronized devices as well.
“Work and personal autofill are mixed”
- Stop entering new information until you identify the active profile.
- Move to the correct profile and disable unwanted sync categories.
- Review saved passwords, addresses and payment details in the appropriate account.
- On a shared computer, create separate operating-system accounts or use guest/private browsing rather than relying only on browser profiles.
Which browser’s account model fits you?
Choose Edge’s model when
- Your devices already use Microsoft accounts and you want a profile-centered sync setup.
- You want explicit per-category switches for favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, tabs, autofill and payment information.
- You are comfortable reviewing Edge’s deletion warning before clearing data.
Choose Chrome’s model when
- You want Google services such as Gmail without being required to sign in to the browser.
- You need local-only bookmarks and passwords on a device that should not upload browser data.
- You want Chrome profiles for work and personal contexts, plus the option of a passphrase for certain synchronized data.
- Your organization uses Chrome management policies that control sign-in or profile behavior.
Use either browser with a deliberate account plan
- List the accounts you actually need on each device.
- Create clearly named personal, work or testing profiles.
- Enable only the sync categories that solve a real cross-device need.
- Check the account identity before saving passwords, payment details or work documents.
- Review deletion and sign-out prompts before accepting them.
- Use operating-system access controls when profile visibility would expose sensitive information.
Bottom line: sync convenience versus account separation
Edge and Chrome both make cross-device browser data possible, but their account relationships are not interchangeable. Edge’s documented workflow centers sync on a signed-in Edge profile and exposes many category switches. Chrome lets you keep Google service sign-in separate from browser sign-in, retain bookmarks and passwords locally when unsigned, and use profiles and selected sync controls to define a narrower data boundary.
For either browser, the safest setup is intentional: use the correct account, separate contexts with profiles, enable only needed categories and treat clear-data commands as potentially cross-device deletions. The official support material explains setup and controls, but it does not establish a universal security or feature winner.
