When Microsoft Edge will not update, the cause is usually one of five things: Edge cannot reach Microsoft’s update servers, a VPN, proxy, firewall or security program blocks the download, Windows Update or the Edge Update Service is stopped, the device lacks space or permission, or an earlier update left damaged files behind. Work through the checks in that order. Most cases can be repaired without removing the browser.
Start with edge://settings/help, then check Windows Update and the Windows troubleshooters. Reinstall Edge only after connectivity, services, permissions, storage, date and time, and pending updates have been checked. Microsoft says that updating Edge keeps your favorites, passwords and settings.
Use this order to fix a stuck Edge update
The quickest route depends on what you can still open and on the error shown. Use the path that matches your situation:

Do not jump between several fixes at once. If you change the network, delete files and restart services together, you lose the clue that identifies the actual cause. Record the exact message and code first, then make one change and test again.

1. Confirm that Edge can reach Microsoft’s update servers
Edge must contact Microsoft to check for a new build and download its installer. A working web page does not always prove that update traffic is allowed: a corporate proxy, DNS filter, VPN, firewall or endpoint-security product can block the update endpoints while ordinary browsing continues.
Test the connection
- Open another browser and visit a few unrelated sites. If they also fail, restart the router or connect the PC to a different working network.
- If the download works on another network, the original network is filtering or interrupting the request. Contact the network administrator rather than repeatedly retrying Edge.
- If a VPN is active, disconnect it temporarily where your organization permits this. An HTTP 403 response from a VPN path indicates that the request is being refused, not that Edge’s installer is necessarily damaged.
- Temporarily check whether security software is blocking the updater. Do not leave protection disabled; use the product’s allow-list or policy controls and restore normal protection after the test.
Allow the required enterprise endpoints
On a managed network, ask the administrator to permit https://msedge.api.cdp.microsoft.com for update checks and *.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com for Edge downloads. The wildcard is a host pattern, not a page to open directly. Proxy authentication, TLS inspection and DNS filtering may also need an administrator’s adjustment.
After the network change, close and reopen Edge and retry edge://settings/help. If the browser still reports the same failure, continue with the Windows diagnostics rather than changing several network settings at once.
A download that stops at the same point on every attempt often indicates an interrupted or filtered connection. A download that never begins points more strongly to endpoint access, DNS, proxy authentication or a security rule. Those observations help an administrator inspect logs without treating the browser installation as corrupt.
2. Run Microsoft’s Windows diagnostics
Windows has separate diagnostics for application compatibility and for the Windows Update engine. Use both when the failure involves installation, services or pending operating-system updates.
Windows 11: Program Compatibility troubleshooter in Get Help
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Run the automated Program Compatibility troubleshooter for Edge installation or update problems.
- Apply any recommended repair, then restart Windows if the app requests it.
- Open Edge and check
edge://settings/helpagain.
Supported Windows versions: run it from Settings
On supported Windows versions, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, and select Run. The exact list can vary by Windows edition and update level.
Use the Windows Update troubleshooter for update-engine failures
Open the same troubleshooter area and run Windows Update. This is especially important when Windows itself shows pending or failed updates, because Edge may be delivered or serviced through the Windows update mechanism on the device. Accept the repair, restart, and finish any Windows update before attempting Edge again.

If a troubleshooter reports that it could not make a change, treat that as a diagnostic result rather than a reason to delete Edge immediately. Check the suggested service, permission or storage issue manually, then run the update path again.
3. Retry through the supported update paths
Check inside Edge
- Open Edge.
- Enter
edge://settings/helpin the address bar and press Enter. - Allow the page to check for updates. If an update is ready, select the restart option when it appears.
- Keep the browser open until the check completes; closing it during download can leave the attempt unfinished.
Microsoft states that Edge checks automatically, but you can manually check and install updates at any time. If the page says the browser is up to date while Windows still reports an Edge update, restart Windows and check again; the two update paths may not complete at the same moment.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install all applicable updates, including a restart when Windows requests one.
- After Windows finishes, restart once more if the system still shows a pending restart, then return to
edge://settings/help.
Use the official installer when Edge will not open
From a working browser, go to www.microsoft.com/edge, download the current Edge installer, and run it. Use the official Microsoft page rather than a third-party download site so the installer and update channel match Microsoft’s current release.
The best path is therefore determined by access: use the in-browser check when Edge opens, Windows Update when the operating system is already servicing updates, and the official web installer when the browser cannot start. Reinstalling is not a substitute for a blocked network or a pending reboot.

Once network access is proven, inspect the PC itself. An update can download successfully and still fail before installation.
Free disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage and confirm that the system drive has room for the downloaded package, temporary extraction files and the installed browser. Remove or move unneeded files, empty the Recycle Bin, and retry. Avoid deleting Edge folders manually at this stage.
Windows and Edge requirements
Confirm that the operating system is supported by the current Edge release and that Windows has completed its own pending updates. An incompatible Windows build or driver can cause the Windows Update engine to reject an otherwise valid Edge package.

Administrator permissions and security controls
An access-denied error can occur when the account cannot write to the installation directory, when a security product locks an installer file, or when organization policy restricts software changes. Sign in with an account that is allowed to install updates, or ask the device administrator to perform the update. Do not bypass a managed policy by deleting protected folders.

Date and time
For error 0x80072F8F, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable Set time automatically, and select Sync now. An incorrect clock can invalidate the secure connection used by the updater.
Windows Update and Edge Update services
- Press the Windows key, type Services, and open the Services app.
- Locate Windows Update and confirm that it is running. If it is stopped, start it; if it is repeatedly stopping, use the Windows Update troubleshooter and check organization policy.
- Locate the Microsoft Edge Update Service. A missing or disabled service can produce
0x80040154. Set it according to your organization’s policy and current Microsoft guidance rather than changing startup settings blindly. - Retry the update after the service state is corrected.
Finish competing update activity
Error 0x80240016 means another update is in progress. Complete any Windows, driver or application update shown in Settings, close installers, and restart the PC. Do not launch several Edge installers simultaneously.
Low storage, a disabled service and a permission restriction can produce similar “installation failed” wording. Check each condition separately: storage in Settings, service state in Services, and administrator or security controls with the person responsible for the device.
5. Clear stale Edge update data
If connectivity and services are healthy but the same package repeatedly fails, the local update cache may contain an incomplete or corrupt download. Microsoft lists the Edge update directory as a troubleshooting location:

- Close every Edge window and wait briefly for Edge processes to exit.
- Back up important work and make sure you can sign in with an administrator account if Windows requests permission.
- Open File Explorer and enter the path above, replacing
YourUsernamewith the Windows account name. - Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for clearing stale update data. If Windows says a file is in use, restart the PC and try again rather than forcing deletion.
- Run the official installer from www.microsoft.com/edge or retry
edge://settings/help.
Do not delete unrelated folders under AppData. Cache cleanup is different from removing the browser profile that contains browsing data. If the folder is absent, do not create or remove arbitrary directories; proceed to the official installer or ask an administrator to inspect the installation.
6. Reinstall Edge when files are missing or corrupt
Reinstallation is appropriate when the installer reports missing or corrupt files, the Edge Update Service is damaged, or every supported update path fails after the preceding checks. Microsoft identifies 0x8004xxxx as the family of errors associated with missing or corrupt installation or update files.

- Close Edge and save any open work.
- Download the installer from www.microsoft.com/edge using another working browser if necessary.
- Run the installer and allow it to repair or replace the existing installation.
- If Microsoft’s current troubleshooting instructions specifically require removal of old installation files, review
C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgefirst. Paths, ownership and permissions vary by Windows installation; deleting files outside the stated Microsoft procedure can make recovery harder. - Restart Windows, open Edge, and verify the version from
edge://settings/help.
Will reinstalling remove passwords and favorites?
Microsoft says that favorites, passwords and settings are kept when you update Edge. A normal repair or update therefore should not be treated as a profile wipe. Before a more extensive removal, confirm that synchronization is enabled in Edge and that you know the account used for sync. If a managed device displays a different policy or warning, stop and ask the administrator before removing installation files.
Reinstalling addresses local program files; it does not repair a blocked proxy, disabled Windows Update service or organization policy. If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, go back to the network, service and Windows Update checks instead of repeating the installer.

The code narrows the next step but is not a complete diagnosis. For example, 0x8024001E calls for connection checks even if ordinary sites load, while 0x80070005 calls for permission and security review rather than repeated downloads. Capture the code exactly; similar-looking characters can lead to a different repair.
When Windows Update is the real problem
Edge troubleshooting often overlaps with Windows Update troubleshooting. Incomplete updates, damaged update files, disabled services, permission restrictions, incompatible drivers, connection failures and low storage can all prevent the Edge update from completing. If Windows Update itself is stuck, repair that path first:
- Restart the computer before attempting another installation.
- Check the network and available space on the system drive.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Install or finish pending Windows updates and obey every restart request.
- Check that Windows Update is running in Services.
Once Windows Update completes normally, check Edge again. Repeatedly reinstalling Edge while the underlying Windows update engine is blocked usually reproduces the same failure.

On a work, school or shared managed PC, the administrator may control update channels, proxy authentication, firewall rules, service startup and installation rights. A browser that updates on a personal network but fails on the managed network is strong evidence of a policy or endpoint-access issue.
- Record the exact error code, the time of the attempt and whether the device was on VPN.
- Give the administrator the required endpoint patterns: https://msedge.api.cdp.microsoft.com and
*.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com. - Ask whether TLS inspection, DNS filtering or proxy authentication is applied to update traffic.
- Do not remove policy-controlled services or folders without approval.
Administrators may prefer to apply the update centrally. In that case, do not substitute a personal installer or alter the update channel, because the local change can conflict with the organization’s configuration.

After the update succeeds
- Open
edge://settings/helpand confirm that the browser reports it is up to date. - Restart Edge once and verify that pinned tabs, favorites, passwords and settings are present.
- Re-enable any VPN or security control that was paused for testing, then confirm that updates remain allowed.
- If the device is managed, report the successful version and any network exception so the administrator can apply a permanent fix.

- Download never begins: test another network, VPN and firewall path, then verify Microsoft’s endpoints.
- Download completes but installation fails: check disk space, permissions, date and time, services and pending updates.
- Windows Update also fails: run its troubleshooter and finish Windows updates before retrying Edge.
