To remove saved passwords that Microsoft Edge cannot decrypt, configure the mandatory DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled policy in Intune. Enabling it—or leaving it unset—deletes affected password values, and Microsoft warns they may be permanently lost. Disabling the policy keeps those values but leaves the password manager’s functionality broken.

What the policy does—and what users lose

DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled, displayed in Microsoft’s policy reference as “Enable deleting undecryptable passwords,” applies to passwords saved in Edge’s built-in password manager. It is not a general password reset: working password values remain untouched. Microsoft says undecryptable values “don’t become decryptable on their own.”

Policy state Effect
Enabled or unset Edge deletes affected undecryptable password values. Password-manager functionality can resume, but the removed values may be permanently lost.
Disabled Edge retains the affected password data, but password-manager functionality remains broken.

Before deployment, tell affected users what will be removed and follow your organization’s credential recovery and change-management procedures. Do not treat this as a recoverable cleanup or promise that deleted passwords can be restored. Microsoft’s policy reference was last updated May 22, 2026.

Check support and applicability

  • Supported versions: Edge 132 or later on Windows and macOS; Edge 139 or later on iOS.
  • Android: Not supported.
  • Policy type: Mandatory is supported; recommended is not.
  • Profiles: Per-profile application is supported, but Microsoft-account signed-in profiles are excluded.
  • Refresh: Dynamic policy refresh is unavailable; Edge must restart for the policy to take effect.

Confirm the Edge versions and profile types in scope before assigning the policy. Microsoft documents platform and application details in its policy reference.

Configure the setting in Intune

Use the Edge Administrative Templates profile when available

  1. In the Intune admin center, create or edit a Windows configuration profile and select the Edge Administrative Templates settings catalog/profile route available in your tenant.
  2. Search for Enable deleting undecryptable passwords or DeletingUndecryptablePasswordsEnabled.
  3. Set the policy to Enabled to delete affected values, or Disabled to retain them while leaving password-manager functionality broken.
  4. Assign the profile to the intended users or devices, then verify that it applies. Have users restart Edge; the setting does not dynamically refresh.

Microsoft recommends the Edge Administrative Templates profile when the setting is available there. The exact availability of this policy in a tenant’s built-in template catalog is not established universally, so check the catalog in your tenant.

If the setting is missing from the templates

Microsoft documents ingesting the Edge ADMX and configuring policies not exposed in the templates through a custom OMA-URI. Follow Microsoft’s Edge MDM and Intune configuration guidance for the ADMX ingestion and OMA-URI format; use the Edge policy’s Windows values below.

The policy is Boolean. Do not deploy this same Edge setting through both Administrative Templates and a custom OMA-URI with different values; Microsoft warns that conflicting configuration can produce unpredictable results. Consult the MDM guidance for the supported ingestion and custom-policy procedure.

Verify deployment and handle problems

  • The setting is not listed: Check whether the policy is available in the tenant’s Edge Administrative Templates catalog. If not, use Microsoft’s documented ADMX-ingestion and custom OMA-URI route.
  • The policy appears not to take effect: Confirm the profile’s assignment and applicability, check that the device runs a supported Edge version and platform, and restart Edge.
  • Passwords are still unavailable: Disabling the policy preserves undecryptable values but does not restore password-manager functionality. Enabling it or leaving it unset removes affected values; do not assume they can be recovered.

For current policy definitions and supported platforms, refer to Microsoft’s Edge policy reference and policy index.
