To enable spellcheck in Microsoft Edge, open edge://settings/languages and choose a Writing assistance option. Choose Basic for local spellchecking, or Microsoft Editor for enhanced spelling and grammar help. Then verify the proofing language matches what you write.
1. Open Edge’s writing-assistance settings

In Edge, enter
edge://settings/languagesin the address bar and press Enter. -
Find Writing assistance. Microsoft’s support documentation identifies this page as the place to choose Basic or Microsoft Editor. Labels and controls can vary by Edge version, so follow the options shown on your settings page.

Microsoft Support: Microsoft Editor checks grammar and more in documents, mail, and the web

2. Choose Basic for local spellchecking
Select Basic under Writing assistance to have Edge check spelling on your device. Microsoft says this mode performs local spellchecking and does not send spellcheck data to Microsoft’s cloud. It is the built-in choice if you want spelling checks without cloud-based spellcheck processing.
3. Choose Microsoft Editor for enhanced assistance
Select Microsoft Editor if you want enhanced spelling and grammar checks. Editor also offers text predictions, which are controlled separately in its settings. Microsoft says Editor works in textboxes where spellcheck is not already supported by the website; it may therefore behave differently from one site or field to another.

What happens to text you type
When Editor checks spelling and grammar, Microsoft says the text is sent to a cloud service for detection, is not stored, and is deleted after processing. Text prediction has separate handling: if enabled, typed characters and predictions may be cached for up to 30 days for service quality and performance improvement. Predictions are available only in select languages and regions.

4. Set the proofing language for your writing
Editor checks the language or languages configured for the browser. In the language settings, specify the proofing languages you use; Microsoft says the settings allow up to three.
Microsoft’s support page lists Editor support for Arabic, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, and Turkish. This list describes Editor support, not identical availability for every Edge feature, region, or language.

Why spellcheck may not appear

The site may already provide spellcheck. Editor runs in textboxes where spellcheck is not already supported by the website, so Edge assistance may not appear in every field.

Check the selected writing-assistance mode. Return to
edge://settings/languagesand confirm that Basic or Microsoft Editor is selected as intended. -
Check the proofing language. Make sure the language configured for proofing matches the text you are entering, and remember that support can vary by language and region.
Microsoft’s documentation does not promise that Editor will underline text in every field or on every site. If a site’s own spellcheck is active, its behavior may be separate from Edge’s assistance.

The Microsoft Editor browser extensions for Edge and Chrome were retired on October 31, 2025, and no longer receive updates or support. Microsoft says their writing-assistance features are built into Edge proofing tools, so use Edge’s built-in settings instead.
