To repair Microsoft Edge in Windows, close Edge for every signed-in user, then open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Microsoft Edge > Modify, approve the prompt, and choose Repair. You need administrator rights and an internet connection. Microsoft says repair should not affect your browser data or settings. Windows’ generic Reset option is not the same as a confirmed Edge browser-settings reset.

Repair Microsoft Edge from Windows Settings

Microsoft’s Edge-specific repair procedure applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Close Edge before starting, including any sessions open for other signed-in users. Make sure you have administrator rights and an internet connection.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps.
  2. On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge and select Modify.
  4. Approve the user-account prompt, then select Repair.

Microsoft says, “Your browser data and settings shouldn’t be affected by repair.” See Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting instructions for the documented procedure.

What “repair” and “reset” mean for Edge

The Edge-specific troubleshooting instructions document Repair through Windows Settings; they do not confirm that every Windows installation provides a separate Edge Reset button or explain that button’s Edge-specific effects. Windows offers Repair and Reset for some apps through Advanced options, but availability varies. Do not assume that resetting a Windows app is equivalent to resetting Edge’s browser settings or that it will preserve the same data.

If your goal is to remove selected browsing data rather than fix the Edge installation, use Edge’s browsing-data controls instead. The consequences depend on which categories and time range you choose.

Choose the fix that matches the problem

Action When it fits Data considerations
Update Edge Edge opens and may be out of date, or an update is available. Microsoft says favorites, passwords, and settings are kept when updating through its update or reinstall guidance.
Windows Repair Edge crashes, will not open, or remains unstable. Microsoft says browser data and settings should not be affected.
Clear selected browsing data A page displays incorrectly, or cache or history appears to be the issue. Choose the categories and time range; synced items may also be cleared from synced devices.
Windows app Reset Use only if Windows exposes the option and you understand its consequences. Generic Windows guidance does not establish Edge-specific effects.
Ask your IT administrator Modify is unavailable on a managed device. Organization policy may control whether repair is available.

If Microsoft Edge keeps crashing or will not open

Try simple checks before repair

  • Close extra tabs, extensions, and other apps.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Check for an Edge update at Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.

If Edge remains unstable, use the Windows Repair steps above. If the Modify control is missing, Microsoft says organization management may be the reason; contact your organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls.

If Edge opens but pages do not load or display correctly

For a page that looks wrong, try clearing only the relevant browsing history or cached images and files for an appropriate time range. In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services, then use the browsing-data controls to choose a time range and the data categories to clear. Microsoft’s history and browsing-data guidance explains the available selections. Avoid selecting every category unless you intend to remove it.

Check sync before deleting data. Microsoft notes that clearing items that are synced can remove them from other synced devices too. You can review what Edge syncs in Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Sync; see Microsoft’s sync settings guidance.

If Edge will not update

Check the update status at Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or enter edge://settings/help in the address bar. Microsoft also describes getting updates through Windows Update and reinstalling Edge from its download page if updating through Settings fails. Its update settings guidance covers those options.
