Microsoft Edge has three separate privacy systems that are often confused: tracking prevention limits trackers placed by websites, optional diagnostic data controls information Microsoft receives to improve Edge and related products, and browsing-activity personalization governs how Microsoft can use your activity for ads, search, shopping, news, and other experiences. They are different controls with different trade-offs, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
What each Edge privacy control actually does
Edge privacy settings are easier to manage when you treat them as three independent questions:

None of these settings is a universal “turn off tracking” switch. Tracking prevention addresses website trackers; diagnostics concern Microsoft’s product-improvement data; personalization concerns Microsoft services. A complete privacy setup requires deciding on each separately.

Microsoft’s support pages reviewed on October 13, 2026 describe the controls and their intended behavior. Menu names can change as Edge and Windows are updated, so look for the same setting names if a path differs slightly on your device.

Tracking prevention: Basic, Balanced, or Strict?
Microsoft says Edge is “designed to detect and block known trackers.” Trackers can record interactions with a site and, in some cases, recognize activity across different sites. Edge offers three levels:

How to change the level
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (the three-dot button).
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Find Tracking prevention.
- Select Basic, Balanced, or Strict.
Balanced is the sensible starting point for most people. Move to Strict when reducing cross-site tracking is more important than maximum compatibility. If a site breaks, you can temporarily test Balanced or create an exception for that specific site.
What a tracking-prevention exception means
An exception is broader than a whitelist of harmless trackers. Microsoft says adding a site exception allows all trackers on that site, including potentially harmful ones. Use an exception only for a site you trust and only when the compatibility problem is clear. Remove the exception after the site no longer needs it.

When a page behaves differently under Strict, select the site-information control at the left of the address bar. Edge can show trackers it blocked for that site. This helps you identify whether a blocked third-party component is associated with a missing video, failed sign-in, or incomplete page. The display is diagnostic information, not proof that every listed tracker caused the problem.

What tracking prevention does not promise
Tracking prevention is not an anonymity service and does not block every possible method of identifying a browser. Microsoft’s documentation describes tracker detection, blocking levels, and exceptions; it does not claim that any level prevents all tracking. Keep that limitation in mind when deciding what additional privacy measures you may need outside Edge.
Optional diagnostic data: what Edge may send and where to control it
Diagnostics are separate from website tracker blocking. Microsoft describes optional diagnostic data as product-improvement information that can include feature usage, performance data, site-load times, memory usage, and websites you visit. Its documentation also lists website-related fields such as a URL, metrics, page title, how the page was accessed, content information, and navigation information. This is Microsoft’s description of possible data categories, not an independent audit of every telemetry event.
Microsoft says diagnostics help keep products secure, up to date, and working as expected, and help improve products and services. The optional setting is managed differently depending on your platform.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Open Diagnostics & feedback.
- Review the available diagnostic-data controls and turn off optional diagnostic data if you do not want to send it.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Privacy.
- Open Diagnostics & feedback.
- Review the optional diagnostic-data setting and change it to your preference.
On Windows, this is a Windows Settings control rather than a universal Edge-only switch. Organization-managed PCs may also restrict which choices are available.

Other operating systems
- In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open the Privacy section.
- Change Send optional diagnostic data to improve Microsoft products.
Microsoft also notes that other applications using the Edge web platform may send optional diagnostics under their own relevant settings. Changing the browser control therefore may not change telemetry behavior for every separate application that embeds Edge technology.
Browsing-activity personalization and Microsoft services
Personalization is a permission-based use of activity, not a tracker-blocking feature. Microsoft lists browsing history, favorites and collections, browser usage, viewed web content, and device or version data as examples of information that may be used, with permission, to personalize experiences across Edge, Bing, Microsoft News, and other Microsoft services. Possible outcomes include personalized ads, search results, shopping recommendations, news, and other web content.
Microsoft says activity from InPrivate and Guest browsing is not collected for this personalization. It also says Collections notes are not used to personalize advertisements. Those statements apply to the described personalization use; they do not mean that every form of local browser storage or every service has identical behavior.
Turn off Edge browsing-activity sharing for personalization
- Open Settings and more > Settings in Edge.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open the Privacy section.
- Turn off the setting that allows Microsoft to save browsing activity—including history, usage, favorites, web content, and other browsing data—to personalize Edge and Microsoft services such as ads, search, shopping, and news.
Microsoft says collection and use for that personalization stops from the point at which you stop sharing the activity. This setting addresses the broader personalization use of browsing activity, not just advertising.

The separate “See ads that interest you” control
The Microsoft privacy dashboard has a separate control labeled See ads that interest you. Turning it off prevents the described data from being used for personalized advertising, including browsing history, regardless of the Edge personalization toggle.
That ad control does not by itself stop browsing activity from being used to personalize search results, news-feed content, or other Microsoft web experiences. If you want to limit those uses as well, change the Edge browsing-activity setting described above. The two controls answer different questions:

Privacy dashboard deletion versus local Edge history
Deleting browsing history from Microsoft’s privacy dashboard does not automatically remove the local history stored on your device. The dashboard copy and the browser’s local copy are separate.

Managing dashboard data and managing local history are two distinct tasks, so perform both when your goal is to clear both locations.

A practical setup for different priorities

Troubleshooting common privacy-setting surprises
A trusted site stops working after selecting Strict
- Confirm the problem is reproducible with Strict enabled.
- Use the site-information control beside the address bar to inspect blocked trackers.
- Try the site in Balanced to confirm a compatibility issue.
- If the site is trusted and required, add a temporary tracking-prevention exception.
- Remember that the exception permits every tracker on that site, including potentially harmful ones; remove it when no longer needed.
I turned off personalized ads but still see personalized search or news
That is expected if only the dashboard advertising control was changed. The ad setting limits personalized advertising, while the Edge browsing-activity permission governs broader personalization of search, shopping, news, and other Microsoft experiences. Review the Edge setting separately.
I deleted dashboard history but Edge still shows local visits
Dashboard deletion does not erase the browser’s local copy. Open edge://history/all and manage local history in Edge.
I cannot find the diagnostic switch in Edge
On Windows, optional diagnostic data is managed through the operating system: Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback in Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback in Windows 10. The in-browser path is documented for other platforms and may also appear in Edge’s Privacy section depending on the build.
What to check after changing settings
- Reopen the Tracking prevention page and verify the selected level.
- Review the address-bar site-information panel on a page where compatibility matters.
- On Windows, confirm the optional diagnostic choice in the operating system rather than assuming an Edge toggle controls it.
- Check both the Edge browsing-activity permission and the privacy-dashboard advertising control if you want to limit personalized Microsoft experiences comprehensively.
- Inspect
edge://history/allwhen your goal includes deleting local browsing history.
These checks help separate a blocked tracker, optional telemetry, a personalization permission, and locally stored history—four different behaviors that are often described loosely as “tracking.”
