If Microsoft Edge will not launch, freezes, crashes, or fails to load just one page, the right fix depends on which symptom you have. Start with a Windows restart and lighter browser workload, then update Edge if it opens; use Windows Settings to repair it if it does not. These steps are Microsoft’s recommended troubleshooting options, not a guarantee that every failure has the same cause.

First identify what is failing

“Not opening” can mean Edge never appears, opens and closes, or starts but becomes unresponsive. A single page failing to load is different: the website or your network may be the problem rather than Edge. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers crashes, failure to open, and pages that do not load: Microsoft Edge troubleshooting tips.

1. Restart Windows and reduce Edge’s workload

If Edge is frozen or slow, close tabs you do not need, pause downloads, and close other running apps. Uninstall extensions you no longer use if you can open Edge. Microsoft notes that memory pressure from tabs, apps, extensions, or other programs can stop a page from loading. Restart the PC and try Edge again; Microsoft also lists a restart as an early step when the browser will not open.

2. Update Edge if it opens

In Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge, then apply any available update. Microsoft recommends checking for updates when Edge crashes or opens but stops working. If Edge cannot launch, skip this step and continue to a Windows-based fix.

3. Check malware and security software

Run a malware scan and check that any third-party security software is up to date, as Microsoft advises. Do not treat disabling protection as a general troubleshooting step. If this is a work- or school-managed device and you cannot change a security setting, ask the administrator.

4. Clear selected browsing data if Edge opens

If Edge opens but has display or performance problems, try clearing browsing history and cached images and files. Microsoft’s troubleshooting procedure uses the All time range for this step. You can select those categories without clearing every kind of browser data.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Before choosing a broader cleanup, review what it can remove: Edge’s data controls include history, download history, cookies and site data, cached images and files, passwords, autofill form data, and site permissions. If sync is enabled, clearing synced items can affect your other synced devices too. Choose the categories and time range deliberately; Microsoft’s guide to viewing and deleting browser data explains the available controls.

5. Repair Edge from Windows Settings

If Edge still will not open, or the earlier steps did not help, use Microsoft’s built-in repair option. The current-style Windows Settings path is:

  1. Close Edge for all users and sign in to Windows with administrative rights.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge, select the menu beside it, and choose Modify.
  4. Approve the prompt, make sure the device is connected to the internet, and select Repair.

Microsoft says, “Your browser data and settings shouldn’t be affected by repair.” If Modify is missing, the Edge installation may be managed by your organization; contact the device administrator. Windows does not offer Repair for every app, and Reset is a more consequential escalation rather than a routine first step for Edge. If Edge opens but one website does not

Open the same page in another browser. If it fails there as well, investigate the connection or the website before changing Edge: restart your modem or router, then contact the site owner if the problem continues. Microsoft describes this diagnostic branch in its network and page-loading guidance.

  • Edge will not launch: restart Windows, then use the Settings repair path if needed.
  • Only one page fails: test it in another browser and check the network or site if it fails there too.
