Microsoft is testing a way for Edge to move to a secure new version without interrupting open tabs or active work, but that seamless-updates design is still an early prototype—not production code or part of Chromium. The practical feature available now is Restart to update on idle, which waits until the device is idle, restarts Edge, installs the pending update and restores your tabs. Edge 152 also begins a faster Stable release schedule, while IT administrators gain security-update alerts for managed Windows devices.

What Microsoft is changing

Microsoft’s October 15, 2026 Edge Blog announcement describes a working prototype that could replace the traditional interruption with an in-place transition to a secure browser version. Open tabs and active work would remain available while the browser changes versions. Microsoft’s Rob Franco and Arunesh Chandra explicitly describe it as “not in production code or part of Chromium today,” so it is a demonstration of the direction Edge may take, not a feature you can enable in the current general release.

The feature users can use today is Restart to update on idle, previously called “Instant Updates.” Edge still restarts, but it schedules that restart when the computer is idle rather than while you are actively browsing. Afterward, Edge restores the open tabs. This reduces the chance that a security update catches you in the middle of a call, document edit or research session, while preserving the restart required to replace browser files safely.

How Edge installs an update today

  1. Edge checks for updates automatically and downloads an available package according to its update settings and any organization policy.
  2. The downloaded package is normally applied at the next Edge restart. Depending on the release and device state, Edge may prompt you to restart.
  3. If Restart to update on idle is available and enabled, Edge can wait for an idle period, restart, apply the update and reopen the tabs that were in the previous session.

Automatic downloading can be allowed over a metered connection where the setting is offered, but cellular-data charges may apply. A company policy can disable or hide these controls, so a work-managed browser may not show the same options as a personal installation.

How to check for, or force, an Edge update

To check immediately rather than wait for the next automatic check:

  1. Open Edge’s Settings and more menu.
  2. Select Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge.
  3. Alternatively, enter edge://settings/help in the address bar.
  4. Let Edge download and install the update. Restart when Edge requests it.

Edge can also receive updates through Windows Update. If neither Edge’s settings page nor Windows Update completes the installation, Microsoft provides a direct installer. Updating through that installer retains favorites, passwords and settings. A restart may still be necessary because the browser must replace files that are in use.

Can Edge update without interrupting your work?

Not completely—not yet. The seamless design is only a prototype, and the current idle feature still performs a restart. The distinction is when the interruption occurs:

Edge’s new release cadence

Beginning with Edge 152, which reaches Stable on August 27, 2026, Microsoft moves the Stable channel to a release every two weeks. Each Stable release is expected to contain about half as much new content as the former monthly releases. Smaller change sets are intended to make validation easier while delivering security and platform improvements sooner.

Extended Stable remains on an eight-week interval and receives every fourth Stable release. Microsoft gives versions 156, 160 and 164 as examples of Extended Stable milestones. This channel trades the newest features for a slower, more predictable change rate.

Channel Cadence from Edge 152 Typical purpose
Stable Every two weeks Faster security and platform delivery with smaller change sets
Extended Stable Every eight weeks; every fourth Stable release Longer validation and change-management windows

Why an update may arrive later than its release date

Microsoft uses progressive rollout for major Stable updates. Distribution occurs over several days so Microsoft can watch health signals and limit the effect of a problem. Critical security fixes use a faster rollout cadence.

That process applies differently by deployment method. Intune-managed deployments use progressive rollout. WSUS and Configuration Manager deployments are controlled by administrators and are not governed by Microsoft’s automatic progressive process. Consequently, two devices on the same Edge channel may not show the same version at the same time.

Security Update Alerts for IT teams

The Edge management service now includes Security Update Alerts for managed Windows devices without additional licensing. An administrator can set a minimum severity threshold and receive dashboard and email alerts when a release contains qualifying security fixes, including zero-day fixes.

The Monitoring dashboard brings together:

  • Release severity
  • Addressed CVEs
  • Managed Windows devices that may need an update
  • Available versions by Edge channel

This gives security and endpoint teams a way to distinguish a routine browser release from one that requires accelerated action, then identify affected devices and channels. It complements—but does not replace—deployment controls in Intune, WSUS or Configuration Manager.

What users and administrators should do

For personal Edge users

  • Leave automatic updates enabled unless a metered-connection policy requires otherwise.
  • Use edge://settings/help when you need to verify the installed version or trigger a check.
  • Save important work before an expected restart, even when idle restart is enabled.
  • If a security fix is urgent, restart manually instead of waiting for an idle period.

For IT administrators

  • Choose Stable for faster security delivery or Extended Stable when an eight-week validation cycle better fits change control.
  • Use Security Update Alerts to set a severity threshold and monitor CVEs, affected Windows devices and channel versions.
  • Account for the difference between Intune progressive rollout and administrator-controlled WSUS or Configuration Manager deployments.
  • Test browser restarts and tab restoration with business-critical web applications before broad rollout.

What this means for Edge users

Edge’s update strategy is shifting toward smaller, more frequent Stable releases and less disruptive restarts. The eventual seamless model remains prospective. For now, the safest way to avoid losing active work is to let Edge update during idle time when possible, keep automatic checks enabled and use the About Microsoft Edge page or a manual restart when a security fix needs to be applied promptly.
