Microsoft Edge handles several kinds of data for different purposes; the documentation does not describe one feature that collects all browsing activity. Microsoft says some information helps configure and maintain the browser, while browsing activity may be used for personalization if the relevant setting is enabled. The title’s “not for spying” framing should be understood as a description of Microsoft’s stated purposes—not independent proof that no personal data is collected or transmitted.
What does Microsoft Edge collect?
There is no single “Edge data collection” switch covering every data flow. Microsoft’s documentation describes configuration data, optional personalization, search data, diagnostics, and data handled by individual features as separate categories.
Browser configuration and feature rollout
Microsoft says Edge may send the operating system, browser channel and version, country or region, and device configuration to its configuration service. It also describes using a resettable identifier unique to the browser and sending this information over HTTPS. The stated purposes include enabling new functionality, keeping Edge up to date, and improving Microsoft products and services. This description does not establish that the rollout service captures a user’s full browsing history. Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation explains this configuration data flow.
Browsing activity for personalization
Microsoft says Edge can use browsing activity—including history, favorites, usage data, viewed web content, and device information—to personalize ads, search results, shopping recommendations, news, and other Microsoft experiences when the relevant setting is enabled with consent. Microsoft says users can turn off this collection and review or delete collected data through its privacy controls. See Microsoft’s explanation of browsing activity for personalized advertising and experiences.

Searches and service improvement
Microsoft says data from web searches in Edge is collected and used to improve Edge, Bing, News, and other Microsoft services. The setting described for this purpose is unavailable on managed devices, according to Microsoft’s search and service improvements guidance.
Does the upcoming feature collect your browsing history?
The title does not identify the feature, and the official material here does not establish which feature it refers to. The configuration documentation describes browser and device information for rollout and maintenance; it does not, by itself, show that the feature collects full browsing history. Separately, Microsoft documents browsing activity collection for personalization when the relevant setting is enabled. Those are distinct data uses and should not be treated as one feature or one blanket collection of browsing data.

Microsoft has also described other, specifically named experiences that handle user-provided information. Its May 13, 2026 announcement says Vision and Voice share screen content and voice with permission. A May 20, 2026 Edge for Business post describes agentic browsing on approved sites with IT controls and user oversight. These announcements describe separate experiences; without more identifying detail, they cannot be assumed to be the unnamed feature in the headline: Vision and Voice announcement and Edge for Business announcement.

How to manage Edge’s documented data settings
To manage personalization, look for the relevant browsing-activity setting in Edge or Microsoft’s privacy controls. Microsoft says the setting can be disabled and that collected data can be reviewed or deleted through those controls. The exact interface may vary by browser version, region, and whether an organization manages the device; Microsoft’s support page provides the current guidance for personalized advertising and experiences.

For search and service improvement, check Edge’s privacy settings for that option. Microsoft notes that the setting is not available on managed devices, where an organization may control settings. See Microsoft’s guidance on search and service improvements.
Does InPrivate stop Microsoft from collecting data?
No. InPrivate and Guest modes do not mean that every category of information collection stops. Microsoft says some information may still be collected in those modes depending on diagnostic and privacy settings. Its guidance also says automatic suggestions are turned off and that information about websites visited is not collected in those modes as described there. These qualifications are specific to Microsoft’s description; they are not a guarantee of zero data collection. See Microsoft Edge’s browsing data and privacy guidance.

What “not for spying” does—and does not—establish
Microsoft gives feature enablement, browser maintenance, personalization, and service improvement as purposes for different data flows. Those stated purposes are useful context, but they do not independently verify every transmission or prove that no personal data is involved. The strongest reading is the narrower one: Edge’s documented collection has multiple purposes and controls, and the specific feature behind the headline cannot be identified from the title alone.
