Choose the browser that fits the account ecosystem and devices you already use, then use an HTML export whenever you need portability or an independent backup. Chrome synchronizes bookmarks through a signed-in Google Account. Edge synchronizes favorites through a signed-in Edge profile. Both browsers provide folders, sorting, editing, and moving tools, so organization is broadly comparable. The major practical difference is that sync is an ongoing account service, while an exported HTML file is a portable, one-time snapshot.

How bookmark syncing differs
Chrome: Google Account synchronization
Chrome saves bookmarks to the signed-in Google Account when bookmark synchronization is enabled. A device running Chrome can then make those bookmarks available after you sign in to the same account and allow bookmark sync. This is account-based replication, not a file that you manually carry between computers.
On a desktop installation, open Chrome’s profile control and confirm that you are signed in to the intended account. In Chrome settings, open the area for your Google services and sync controls, then make sure bookmarks are included in the data being synchronized. The exact wording and placement can change between Chrome releases, so verify the account name and the bookmark sync state rather than assuming the active browser window is using the account you expect.

Edge: synchronization through an Edge profile
Edge provides a profile-based sync system for favorites and other profile data. Sign in to the Edge profile you want to use, open the profile’s sync settings, and ensure favorites are enabled. The profile may be personal, work, or school-managed; the available controls can therefore depend on how the device is administered.

As with Chrome, the important check is identity: the same Edge profile must be used on each device. A favorite saved while another profile is active can appear to be missing when you later open a different profile. Before troubleshooting a sync problem, inspect the profile indicator and the sync status on both devices.
These are separate ecosystems
Chrome’s bookmark sync and Edge’s favorites sync are not one shared database. Signing in to Chrome does not make its bookmarks appear automatically in Edge, and signing in to Edge does not populate Chrome. Each browser synchronizes its own library inside its own profile system.
If you use both browsers, decide which account ecosystem should be the long-term home for new bookmarks. Use the other browser’s import function for a deliberate copy, or repeat an export/import process when you intentionally want to refresh the second library. Do not assume that turning on sync in both browsers creates reliable two-way synchronization between them.
What sync is good for
- Keeping the same bookmark set available on multiple signed-in devices running the same browser.
- Recovering access after replacing a device, provided the correct account or profile and sync settings are restored.
- Maintaining ongoing changes, such as new bookmarks, edits, folder moves, or deletions, within one browser ecosystem.
Sync is not a substitute for an independent archive. A deletion or unwanted reorganization that propagates through the account can affect every synchronized device. An HTML export gives you a separate rollback copy.
Folders and organization
Chrome’s folder model
Chrome’s Bookmark Manager supports creating folders, renaming them, sorting items, editing titles or URLs, and moving bookmarks within the folder structure. You can use nested folders to separate work, personal, reading lists, projects, or temporary research.

To organize items, open Chrome’s bookmark manager from the browser menu. Select the folder or bookmark you want to change, use the manager’s organize or item menu, and choose the create, edit, move, or sort action. Dragging items between folders is also available in many desktop builds, but the menu command is a safer choice when you need to verify the destination.
Edge’s favorites folder model
Edge Favorites supports creating, renaming, deleting, sorting, and managing favorites folders. Its terminology differs from Chrome’s, but the underlying model is familiar: a saved link has a title and address, and folders provide hierarchy.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open Favorites from the Edge menu, select the folder or favorite, and use the available management menu to create a folder, rename an item, move it, sort its contents, or delete it. The location of a command can vary with the Edge release and window layout, so use the Favorites manager rather than relying only on the favorites bar.
Where practical differences matter
The feature lists are broadly equivalent for normal personal use. The choice usually comes down to interface familiarity, the account already used on your devices, and any work or school policy that controls browser settings. Neither browser’s official documentation used here establishes a universal maximum number of folders or bookmarks, so there is no evidence-based folder-capacity winner.
HTML export and import: the portability standard
An HTML bookmarks file is the most browser-independent transfer format documented by both vendors. It contains a snapshot of your saved links and their folder structure at the time of export. It does not continue updating when you add or remove a bookmark later.

Export from Chrome
- Open Chrome on the computer that contains the bookmarks.
- Open the browser menu and go to the bookmarks area, then open Bookmark Manager. In some releases the menu is labeled Bookmarks and lists; in others it may appear as Bookmarks.
- In Bookmark Manager, open its item menu and choose Export bookmarks.
- Save the resulting HTML file to a trusted location. Give it a date-based name, such as
chrome-bookmarks-2026-10-18.html, so you can distinguish it from later exports.
The export is a point-in-time copy. Leave the original Chrome library unchanged until you have confirmed that the file opens or imports correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesImport Chrome bookmarks into Edge
- Open Edge and open its Settings and more menu.
- Open Favorites or the browser-data import area, then choose the option to import from a bookmarks HTML file. Edge may present this under Import browser data.
- Select the HTML file exported from Chrome.
- After the import completes, open Favorites and inspect the destination folder. Confirm that nested folders, titles, and important URLs are present.
Edge can also offer direct browser-data import on some installations. Selecting an HTML file is preferable when you want a self-contained transfer copy that is not dependent on Chrome being installed or signed in.
Export from Edge
- Open Edge on the computer containing the favorites.
- Open Favorites from the browser menu, then open the Favorites manager’s additional-options menu.
- Choose Export favorites and save the HTML file to a trusted location.
- Use a descriptive, dated filename such as
edge-favorites-2026-10-18.html.
Menu labels can differ by Edge version, but the required action is an export of favorites to HTML, not a screenshot or a copied list of addresses.
Import Edge favorites into Chrome
- Open Chrome and open its browser menu.
- Go to the bookmarks area and choose Import bookmarks and settings, or open Bookmark Manager and use its import command.
- Choose the option for a bookmarks HTML file.
- Select the HTML file exported from Edge.
- Inspect the imported folder and test several high-value links before deleting or changing the source library.
Protect the transfer file
Store the HTML file on media or storage you trust, such as a USB flash drive kept in a secure place or encrypted cloud storage. Anyone who obtains the file can usually see the saved web addresses, including links that reveal work projects, private services, or internal systems. Treat it as sensitive browsing data even though it is not the same as a password database.
A safe migration workflow
Use this sequence when moving a library permanently or creating a second copy.

- Choose the source. Decide whether Chrome or Edge contains the authoritative, cleanest library. Avoid exporting both at the same time unless you are intentionally merging them.
- Pause unnecessary edits. Finish urgent folder moves and title changes before exporting so the HTML file represents a stable state.
- Export to HTML. Save the file with the source browser, account context, and date in its name.
- Keep a rollback copy. Do not overwrite the original file when making a later export. Retain at least one known-good snapshot until the destination has been checked.
- Import into the destination browser. Use the destination’s HTML import command rather than manually copying addresses one by one.
- Audit the result. Check top-level folders, nested folders, a sample of important links, and any bookmarks with unusual characters or long titles.
- Resolve duplicates deliberately. If the destination already had bookmarks, imported copies may have the same URL with different titles or folder locations. Keep the version that has the correct context, then remove only confirmed duplicates.
- Enable ongoing sync only after the audit. Once the destination library is correct, sign in to the intended profile and turn on bookmark or favorite sync if you want future changes replicated there.
Can Edge and Chrome stay synchronized with each other?
They can be kept approximately aligned through repeated exports and imports, but the documented systems do not provide a guaranteed, native two-way Edge-to-Chrome bookmark sync. Chrome syncs within Chrome’s Google Account ecosystem, while Edge syncs within Edge’s profile ecosystem.
One-way handoff
For a clean move, export once from the source, import once into the destination, then use only the destination browser for new saves. This produces the least duplication and makes future backups straightforward.
Periodic refresh
If you must maintain both libraries, select one as the primary library and periodically export it. Import the new HTML snapshot into the secondary browser only after reviewing what changed. A manual schedule avoids the confusion of importing two independently edited libraries into each other.
Why repeated two-way imports become messy
- The same URL can exist in multiple folders with different titles.
- Importing does not know which copy is newer when both browsers were edited.
- Deleting a duplicate in one browser does not automatically delete its counterpart in the other.
- Folder moves can be mistaken for new bookmarks when you compare only URLs.
For a large or frequently changing collection, document which browser is authoritative and keep dated HTML snapshots. That gives you a recoverable history without pretending the two sync systems are one service.

| Your situation | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Most of your devices already use Chrome and the same Google Account. | Use Chrome as the primary library. | Its account-based sync fits your existing device setup. |
| Most of your devices already use Edge with one Edge profile. | Use Edge as the primary library. | Favorites sync within the profile you already use. |
| You regularly switch browsers. | Pick one source of truth and keep dated HTML exports. | This separates ongoing sync from portable backups. |
| You are changing computers or browsers once. | Export HTML, transfer it securely, and import it. | It is a documented one-time migration path. |
| Your organization manages browser settings. | Check the work or school policy before changing sync. | Administrative controls can limit profiles, sync, or imports. |
| You need recovery from accidental deletion. | Keep independent HTML snapshots. | Sync alone may replicate an unwanted deletion. |
Troubleshooting missing or incorrect bookmarks
Bookmarks appear on one device but not another
- Confirm that both devices are signed in to the same Google Account in Chrome or the same Edge profile in Edge.
- Check that bookmark or favorites sync is enabled, not merely that the browser is signed in.
- Look for a second browser profile. A bookmark saved in one profile is not necessarily visible in another.
- On a work or school device, check whether policy controls sync or blocks changes.
- Allow time for the browser to process a recent change, then close and reopen the bookmark manager before judging the result.
The import created duplicates
Do not immediately delete an entire imported folder. Compare URLs and titles first. Keep the copy with the correct folder context, merge unique items, and remove only duplicates you have verified. Save the original HTML file until cleanup is complete.

Folder nesting looks different
Open the destination’s full bookmark or favorites manager rather than checking only the toolbar. Expand each relevant parent folder and compare the hierarchy with the source. If a folder is missing, repeat the import from the untouched HTML file instead of exporting the already-modified destination.
The imported file is rejected
- Confirm that you selected the browser’s HTML import option, not a password or settings import option.
- Verify that the file still has an HTML extension and was not renamed by an email or file-sharing service.
- Try the export again from the source browser and save it locally before transferring it.
- Use a current desktop version of the destination browser if the mobile app does not expose HTML import.
A bookmark opens the wrong page
Inspect the saved URL in the destination manager. The import generally transfers the address that was stored; it does not guarantee that the site still exists, that a redirect remains valid, or that you still have permission to access it. Update or remove obsolete addresses after confirming the problem is with the saved link rather than the browser.
Sync, export, and backup are different jobs
| Need | Best tool | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| See current bookmarks on several devices using one browser. | Account or profile sync | Requires the same signed-in ecosystem and can propagate deletions. |
| Move a library between Chrome and Edge. | HTML export and import | It is a snapshot, so later edits are not transferred automatically. |
| Recover from an accidental change. | A dated HTML backup kept separately. | You must import it or use it to rebuild the library manually. |
| Compare two libraries before merging. | Separate exports with clear filenames. | The browsers do not provide a universal, automatic merge decision. |
A sensible maintenance routine is to keep sync enabled in your primary browser, export an HTML copy after major reorganizations, and retain older snapshots for a reasonable recovery period. If you stop using a browser, export its final library before signing out or removing the profile.
What the official documentation does not establish
The official feature and procedure pages used for this comparison do not publish a controlled, fair head-to-head measurement of Chrome-versus-Edge bookmark sync speed. They also do not establish a universal folder-count or bookmark-count limit that applies to every edition, account type, device, or policy configuration. Performance can be affected by account state, network conditions, device load, profile size, and administrative settings, so a precise universal number would be misleading.
That leaves a practical decision rather than a benchmark decision: use the account ecosystem and devices that are already convenient, organize links with either browser’s folder tools, and rely on HTML when you need a portable or independent copy.
