If Microsoft Defender Offline scan appears not to work, first check Protection history: Windows may have completed the scan without making the result obvious. If there is no result, confirm the restart flow, install available Windows updates, check free disk space and scan speed, and verify which antivirus provider is active. The right next step depends on what happens after you select Scan now.

What should happen when you run an Offline scan?

Microsoft Defender Offline is designed to restart the PC and scan in the Windows Recovery Environment, outside the normal Windows session. The PC restarts again after the scan completes. Microsoft says it performs a quick scan in that environment; this is different from a full scan, which examines every file and program. Microsoft’s Windows Security scan guidance describes the available scan types and expected flow.

  1. Save open work, since starting the scan restarts the PC.
  2. Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), then select Scan now.
  4. Allow the PC to restart and run the scan. It should restart into Windows again when the scan finishes.
  5. Open Windows Security and select Protection history to review the outcome. Microsoft also explains this history in its instructions for scanning an item with Windows Security.

If the scan seems to have done nothing

Check Protection history first

Before starting another scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Microsoft identifies Protection history as the place to see Offline scan results. A missing on-screen message alone does not prove the scan failed.

Note exactly what happened after Scan now

If there is no relevant result in Protection history, distinguish among these outcomes: Scan now does not respond; the PC does not restart; the PC restarts but loads Windows normally without an apparent scan; or Windows displays an error. These are different symptoms, and Microsoft’s general malware troubleshooting guidance does not establish one fix for all failures to enter the Offline scan environment. Record the exact error, Windows version and build, active antivirus provider, and what the PC did after you selected Scan now. If the problem persists, Microsoft recommends submitting error feedback through Feedback Hub and keeping Windows updated. See Microsoft’s malware detection and removal troubleshooting guidance.

Apply general scan fixes that may help

Install available Windows updates

For general scan errors, Microsoft recommends using Windows Update to apply fixes. After updating, try the Offline scan again and note whether its behavior changes.

Check available space on the system drive

Make sure the drive where Windows is installed has enough free space. Microsoft warns that low free space can prevent a scan from completing malware removal or quarantine. This is especially relevant when the scan finds a threat but cannot finish the associated action.

Reduce other activity if scans are slow

Close unnecessary apps before scanning. Microsoft notes that large disks and large files, including ZIP archives, can take longer to scan; it also recommends restarting and running a scan before opening other apps. These are general scan-performance steps, not proof that a slow Offline scan has failed to start.

Check whether another antivirus product is active

In Windows Security, inspect the security provider status. Microsoft says that installing a non-Microsoft antivirus or antimalware product automatically makes Microsoft Defender Antivirus inactive; after removing the other product, Defender should return to active mode. Microsoft recommends against running multiple real-time antivirus products simultaneously. Do not routinely disable protection as a troubleshooting step. See Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ.

Choose a scan that fits the problem

Scan type Where it runs What it is for
Quick scan In the normal Windows environment A regular scan of common locations.
Full scan In the normal Windows environment Examines every file and program; may take longer.
Custom scan In the normal Windows environment Scans a location or item you choose.
Microsoft Defender Offline scan After a restart, in Windows Recovery Environment Scans outside the loaded Windows session, which can be useful when malware may interfere with Windows.

Microsoft describes Offline as a quick scan in Recovery Environment, not as a full scan. If the goal is to scan outside the normal Windows session, choose Offline; if the feature itself is failing, switching scan types may provide a way to scan but does not repair the Offline scan flow. The scan options and their descriptions are in Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.

When to consider Windows recovery options

Windows recovery is a later escalation, not a first-line repair for an Offline scan button or restart problem. Consider it only if malware has caused broader damage or Windows cannot be restored through ordinary troubleshooting. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance warns that some recovery actions can cause data loss; back up important files before using a disruptive recovery option.

Windows 10 support status

The cited Microsoft scan guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If this PC still runs Windows 10, account for that support status in your longer-term security maintenance decisions; scan troubleshooting by itself does not restore operating-system support.
