For a new individual subscription in the United States, Microsoft 365 Premium is the current plan Microsoft positions for heavy Copilot use. It combines desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote with Copilot, adds AI agents for complex work, and offers extensive use of selected AI experiences. Microsoft lists it at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year on the US consumer page checked October 13, 2026.
The comparison with Copilot Pro needs a qualification: a former Copilot Pro Store address now redirects to the Microsoft 365 Premium product page, but Microsoft’s published pages do not document a complete discontinuation timeline or prove that every historical Pro benefit transferred unchanged. The practical question is therefore not “Which old name wins?” but “Do Premium’s current apps and higher-use AI capabilities match the way I work?”
What happened to Microsoft Copilot Pro?
Microsoft currently promotes Microsoft 365 Premium on its consumer plans page. A Store URL that previously identified Copilot Pro redirects to the Microsoft 365 Premium page. That redirect establishes the current storefront route, not a feature-by-feature migration record.
Microsoft’s current pages do not provide a complete historical timeline for Copilot Pro, a definitive statement that every Pro entitlement became a Premium entitlement, or a single table comparing every past and present capability. You should not treat the two names as proven one-to-one equivalents. If you already paid for Copilot Pro, check the plan and renewal details shown in your Microsoft account rather than assuming that an old description still applies.

For someone deciding what to buy now, Premium is the documented consumer offer. The rest of this guide compares the current Premium evidence with what can responsibly be established about the former Pro name.

Which AI features are included in Microsoft 365 Premium?
Copilot inside the core desktop apps
Premium’s listed bundle puts Copilot directly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote desktop applications. That matters if your work already happens in those programs: the value is not just a separate chat window, but assistance in the documents, spreadsheets, presentations, messages and notes where you are working.
- Word: Copilot is included in the listed desktop Word experience for drafting and working with documents.
- Excel: Copilot is listed in the desktop spreadsheet experience, subject to the AutoSave and OneDrive conditions described below.
- PowerPoint: Copilot is included in the listed desktop presentation application.
- Outlook: Copilot is included in the listed desktop mail and calendar application.
- OneNote: Microsoft lists the desktop app with Copilot as part of Premium.
The listing tells you where Copilot is available; it does not promise identical controls, output quality or limits in every app. Microsoft applies usage limits, and capabilities can change as the service evolves.
AI agents for complex work
Premium’s description adds AI agents intended for multi-step tasks rather than a single short prompt. Microsoft gives source-cited research reports and data analysis with visualization as examples. These examples are useful decision markers:
- If you need a report that cites its sources, the research-report agent is closer to your use case than ordinary text generation.
- If you need to inspect information and turn it into charts or other visual analysis, the data-analysis example is relevant.
- If you mainly ask occasional questions or rewrite a paragraph, you may not use the Premium-only agent capabilities often enough to justify choosing the higher-tier offer over a basic Microsoft 365 plan that meets your other needs.
“AI agents” does not mean every task is autonomous or that every connected source is available. Treat the examples as the types of complex workflows Microsoft advertises, and verify the exact agent and data access shown in your account.
Extensive use is selective, not unlimited
Microsoft describes Premium as providing extensive use on selected AI features, while also stating that AI usage limits apply. The published pages reviewed here do not give one universal numerical quota covering every app, agent and account.

That distinction affects planning. A person who uses Copilot across several long documents, spreadsheets and presentations every day should expect more headroom than a light user, but should not advertise the plan to colleagues as unlimited. Limits may differ by experience, account, region or later product changes.

The redirect from the old Copilot Pro Store address is the strongest current signal about where Microsoft sends a consumer looking for that product. It does not answer several historical questions:
- When, precisely, the standalone Pro offer changed or was withdrawn.
- Whether every former Pro feature, limit and entitlement moved to Premium.
- Whether a particular legacy subscriber has the same benefits as a newly purchased Premium subscription.
- Whether a price or promotion once associated with Pro still applies.
Consequently, avoid buying on the assumption that “Pro” and “Premium” are interchangeable labels. Use the current Premium feature list, your account’s subscription page and the terms shown for your billing country.
Choose by the work you actually do
Choose Premium for recurring, app-based AI work
Premium is the logical current consumer choice when you regularly need Copilot in multiple desktop Microsoft 365 applications and expect to use advanced AI experiences. Typical signals include:
- You produce documents in Word, analyze workbooks in Excel, build presentations in PowerPoint and manage mail in Outlook every week.
- You want to try source-cited research reports or visualized data analysis rather than only conversational answers.
- You expect frequent use and value extensive allowances on the selected experiences Microsoft identifies.
- You want the current Microsoft consumer bundle instead of trying to locate or renew a product whose old Store address now redirects.
Do not choose Premium solely for the word “AI”
If your use is occasional—such as polishing a short email, brainstorming a title or asking a quick question—the premium agent examples may not change your outcome. First list the apps you use, the number of people who need AI access and how often you expect to run substantial tasks. A higher tier is useful only when those requirements match its documented features.

Households need to separate app sharing from AI access
A family may value the six-user Microsoft 365 entitlement for the desktop apps, but the AI calculation is different. Microsoft says the subscriber can share Premium with five other people, yet the AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Designer remain for the subscription owner. Five additional household members should not be counted as five additional Premium Copilot users.

Former Pro subscribers need an account-specific check
If your account still displays Copilot Pro, record the exact plan name, renewal date and benefits shown in the subscription dashboard. Do not cancel a legacy subscription before confirming what Premium provides in your region and whether any entitlement or billing change is involved. The public pages do not establish a universal migration rule.
Price, billing and household value
US consumer prices
Microsoft listed Premium at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year on the US consumer page checked October 13, 2026. Both are subscription prices, and the subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it. The annual price is $39.89 less than paying the listed monthly rate for twelve months ($239.88), before taxes or any later price change.
These figures are specific to the United States consumer listing and that check date. Microsoft’s Store directs customers to select the country or region where they will be billed and use the software; prices, taxes, availability, plan names and features can differ elsewhere. Check the checkout page immediately before purchase.

- Count the people who need the desktop Microsoft 365 apps.
- Count separately the people who need Copilot AI.
- Assign the AI entitlement only to the Premium subscriber, because Microsoft’s sharing rule does not extend the listed AI features to the other household members.
- Compare the resulting app and AI value with the annual or monthly price shown for your billing region.
This prevents a common mistake: dividing the price by six and describing it as six AI subscriptions. The documented sharing arrangement is one AI owner plus up to five additional plan users for the shared subscription benefits.
Personal, work and school accounts are different
Microsoft’s Copilot app guidance distinguishes personal Microsoft accounts from work or school accounts backed by Microsoft Entra. Features vary by account and subscription. A consumer Premium purchase therefore should not be presented as a license for an employer’s organizational data or as a replacement for whatever Microsoft 365 plan an administrator provides.
When a personal account is the right scope
Use the consumer comparison when you are buying for yourself or a household, signing in with a personal Microsoft account and using the consumer Microsoft 365 apps. The Premium price and sharing details above apply to that US consumer context.

When to ask an administrator
If your files, mail or identity belong to a school or employer, ask the organization which Copilot and Microsoft 365 licenses are assigned to your work or school account. Signing into a personal Premium subscription does not establish access to organizational data, administrator-controlled features or workplace compliance settings.
Requirements before Copilot can work
Excel requires AutoSave and OneDrive
Microsoft specifically states that Copilot in Excel requires AutoSave to be turned on and the workbook to be saved to OneDrive. It does not work on an unsaved file. A local workbook that has never been saved to OneDrive can therefore fail even when your Premium subscription is active.
- Open the workbook in the supported Excel desktop experience.
- Save the file to OneDrive.
- Turn on AutoSave.
- Wait for the save to complete, then open Copilot in Excel.
- If Copilot is still unavailable, confirm that you are signed into the Microsoft account that owns the Premium subscription.
Check account and region eligibility
Sign in with the account that holds the subscription, confirm that the subscription is active and check the country or region attached to billing. Microsoft notes that age requirements for AI features can vary by region. A feature shown in one market or for one account type may not appear for another.
Expect app-specific behavior
Copilot’s presence in one listed app does not guarantee identical availability in another. Check the feature’s own requirements, save state and account context when troubleshooting. Keep the app updated through your normal Microsoft 365 update channel, but do not interpret an update as proof that every Premium-exclusive capability is enabled for every user.

- Identify your account: personal consumer account, or work/school Entra account. Stop the consumer comparison if the work or school account is the one that must access your organization’s data.
- List the apps: mark Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote that you use regularly. Premium’s documented Copilot bundle is most relevant when several of these are central to your routine.
- Describe the task complexity: occasional drafting is different from source-cited research or visualized data analysis. Premium’s AI-agent examples target the latter category.
- Estimate frequency: daily, weekly or occasional use. Premium offers extensive use on selected experiences, but no universal unlimited quota is published.
- Count AI users: for a shared household plan, count the subscriber as the AI user unless Microsoft’s current terms explicitly say otherwise. Do not allocate the listed Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Designer AI features to the five additional sharers.
- Verify the checkout: confirm the local currency, taxes, renewal amount, cancellation terms and included features for your billing country before paying.
Common mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating the redirect as proof of an identical rebrand
Fix: use the current Premium listing for a new purchase and verify any existing Pro account separately. The redirect shows where Microsoft sends visitors now; it does not supply a complete historical equivalence table.

Mistake: expecting every shared user to receive AI
Fix: distinguish shared Microsoft 365 apps from owner-only AI. The subscriber can share with five people, but Microsoft limits the listed AI features to the owner.
Mistake: opening an unsaved local Excel workbook
Fix: save it to OneDrive and enable AutoSave before trying Copilot.
Mistake: using a personal subscription for a work account
Fix: check whether you are signed into a personal Microsoft account or a work/school Entra account, then follow your organization’s licensing guidance for workplace data.

Make the choice
For a US individual buying today, Microsoft 365 Premium is the documented route when you want Copilot across the listed desktop apps plus advanced agents and greater headroom on selected experiences. Its $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annual price buys one owner’s AI access; sharing the subscription with five other people does not create five more AI seats.
Copilot Pro remains a historical comparison point rather than a fully documented current alternative. The former Store URL’s redirect is useful evidence about Microsoft’s present storefront, but not proof that every Pro feature migrated unchanged. Base your decision on the Premium features you will use, your account type, the Excel storage requirements, regional eligibility and the terms displayed at checkout.
