Microsoft says its new Copilot app experience can create and update editable Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PowerPoint presentations, with the conversation and file together in one workspace. The company announced the change on September 25, 2026, but described a staged rollout through its Frontier program and a private preview—not general availability for everyone.
What Office in Copilot is designed to do
Microsoft presents the Copilot app’s Home as a starting point that brings Chat and Cowork together. Chat is for quick conversational tasks; Cowork is for delegating broader work. Office in Copilot adds the ability to work with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from that experience, with the conversation alongside the file.
In its announcement, Microsoft says Copilot can create or update real, editable documents, workbooks, and presentations, and that content stays synchronized between Copilot and the Office apps. These are Microsoft’s descriptions of the announced product, not independently verified performance results.

Microsoft’s examples include drafting a launch brief, modeling a budget, building a presentation, or picking up a file the team is already working on. The point is to move from a request to an editable Office file without separating the conversation from the work.

Word
Ask Copilot to draft or update a document such as a launch brief. Microsoft describes the resulting file as editable in Word and within Copilot.
Excel
For a workbook, Microsoft says users can see what changed and why, and that Copilot can recommend a chart. Its announcement does not establish how these features perform across different workbooks or tasks.

Working with teammates and Office apps
Microsoft describes Office in Copilot as supporting shared work, including picking up files teammates are already editing. It says changes stay synchronized between Copilot and Office apps. The announcement does not provide independent validation of sync speed or behavior, so treat synchronization and collaboration as product claims rather than tested results.

Availability: staged rollout, not universal access
Microsoft’s September 25 announcement says Home and Code will begin rolling out through the Frontier program “in the coming weeks,” while Autopilot is expanding to private preview. Microsoft’s EMEA summary also describes a gradual rollout. The announcement does not give a guaranteed date when all users will receive Office in Copilot, so check Microsoft’s current availability information or your account’s Copilot app before relying on access.
The Microsoft Support page says the Microsoft 365 app is now called the Microsoft Copilot app and is available on the web, iOS, Android, and Windows. That describes the app’s platform reach, not confirmation that the newly announced Office integration is enabled for every platform or account.

| Account type | What Microsoft Support says about Copilot Chat | What it establishes about Office in Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| Work or school | Copilot Chat is available at no additional cost to users with a Microsoft 365 license, and to users with a Microsoft Copilot license. | It does not establish access to the newly announced Office integration. |
| Personal | The page lists Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro subscribers; access is for primary account holders only. | It does not establish plan-by-plan access to the newly announced Office integration. |
So a subscription or license that qualifies you for Copilot Chat should not be treated as proof that Office in Copilot is available to you. Microsoft’s announcement places the new experience in staged rollout and preview phases.

What Microsoft has—and has not—announced
The announcement is a product direction and rollout update: Home combines Chat and Cowork, and Office in Copilot is intended to let people create or update editable Office files alongside the conversation. Microsoft also describes collaboration and synchronization with Office apps. The published material does not establish universal availability, a plan-by-plan entitlement for Office in Copilot, or independent performance results.
