To stop future Microsoft 365 Family charges, cancel the subscription or turn off recurring billing in the account and store that billed you. For a Microsoft-billed plan, use the purchasing Microsoft account at Services & subscriptions. If an app store or retailer processed payment, cancellation must be completed through that seller. Turning off renewal does not end access immediately: the owner and shared users keep their benefits until the expiry date shown in the account.
First, identify who bills the subscription
The cancellation route depends on the original purchase channel. Sign in with the account that paid for the subscription; a person who only receives shared benefits may not see the controls needed to change billing.
| Purchase channel | Where to cancel | Who handles refunds and billing changes |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Microsoft purchase | Microsoft account Services & subscriptions | Microsoft |
| Apple, Google Play, or another app store | The store’s subscription settings | The app-store provider |
| Retailer purchase | The retailer’s account or support process | The retailer |
Microsoft explains the distinction in Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription?: third-party sellers control subscriptions they bill, and Microsoft cannot cancel or modify those transactions.
How to cancel a Microsoft-billed Family subscription
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions with the Microsoft account that purchased Microsoft 365 Family.
- Find Microsoft 365 Family and select Manage. The exact buttons can vary with the account and region.
- Choose the cancellation or recurring-billing option shown on the page.
- Review the on-screen consequences, end date, and any refund information. Complete the confirmation step rather than closing the page midway.
- Save the displayed expiry date and confirmation email or page for your records.
Microsoft’s instructions are documented in Turn recurring billing on or off for a Microsoft subscription and Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription.

When the page says “Turn on recurring billing”
If the control says Turn on recurring billing instead of Cancel, Microsoft says recurring billing is already off. The subscription is scheduled to expire on the date displayed, so there is no second cancellation action to perform. Do not turn billing back on unless you deliberately want to renew.
Check the expiry date, not just the button state
A successful cancellation changes the next-billing status and shows an end date. Keep that date in mind when planning file moves, email changes, or access for other family members. If the account still shows a future charge, an active renewal, or no end date, repeat the review and confirmation or contact the seller that billed you.
How to cancel an app-store or retailer subscription
Microsoft cannot switch the billing owner for a subscription bought through another store. Open the account used for that purchase, locate its subscriptions list, and cancel Microsoft 365 Family there. The store—not Microsoft—will display the renewal date, confirmation, and any refund decision. If you cannot find the subscription, check other store accounts and the original receipt before contacting support.

Does access stop as soon as recurring billing is turned off?
No. Microsoft states: “You (and anyone you have shared your Microsoft 365 Family subscription with) can continue to use your subscription as normal until the expiry date.” Turning off renewal prevents the next charge; it is not an immediate termination. Desktop Office applications, subscription storage, and other Family benefits remain available through the displayed expiry date, subject to the normal account and service requirements.
What changes on the expiry date
When the term ends, the owner and shared users lose the subscription benefits. Their storage allowances are reduced, so each person should check actual usage before that date rather than assuming that shared capacity will remain available.
Stopping sharing with one person is different
The owner can stop sharing with an individual before the subscription expires. Microsoft’s Manage Microsoft 365 subscription sharing guidance says the removed person loses Family benefits and extra OneDrive storage, but is not automatically removed from the Microsoft family group. Removing someone from the family group is a separate account-management action.

Cancellation and a refund are separate decisions. Microsoft’s refund policy says eligibility is determined automatically during the cancellation process; completing cancellation does not guarantee money back. Review the result shown before final confirmation and keep the receipt.

Initial purchase
For a direct Microsoft purchase, the general policy describes an initial-purchase window of 30 days or before the first recurring billing date, whichever comes first. This is a general rule, not a promise that every account, country, product edition, or purchase will qualify.
Recurring renewal
Microsoft also describes a one-time refund of the latest recurring charge when cancellation occurs within 30 days after that payment. The account’s cancellation flow determines whether the condition applies. A charge older than that window may not qualify under the general policy.
Region and purchase channel can change the result
Regional laws and Microsoft’s listed-market rules can allow prorated refunds in some locations. App-store and retailer purchases must be taken to the original seller, whose own terms and timing apply. For the exact decision on your account, use Microsoft’s Microsoft subscription refund policy and How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription pages during cancellation.

Before expiry, check the storage usage of the owner and every person who relies on the Family plan. Microsoft’s cancellation guidance says the post-subscription allowance is 5 GB of cloud storage, including OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments, plus 15 GB of Outlook.com storage. These are per-account service limits, not a replacement pool that the owner can redistribute.

| Service or data type | Allowance described after cancellation | If usage remains above the allowance |
|---|---|---|
| OneDrive and other cloud data covered by the cloud quota | 5 GB | New uploads, edits, and syncing can be blocked |
| Outlook.com storage | 15 GB | Sending or receiving mail may be affected when the account is over quota |
Microsoft’s Microsoft storage quotas article says an over-quota OneDrive account can be frozen after three months and might be deleted, including its files, after six months if it remains over the limit. The timeline applies to continued over-quota status; cancellation does not automatically delete every account or file on day one.
Storage checklist before the term ends
- Sign in to each participating account and record OneDrive and Outlook usage separately.
- Delete unnecessary files, empty recycle bins where appropriate, or move data to storage you control.
- Download irreplaceable documents, photos, and shared files before access changes.
- Reduce mailbox size if Outlook.com usage is near its limit; large attachments can consume the cloud allowance described by Microsoft.
- Allow time for deletions and quota calculations to complete, then recheck the account.
- Tell shared users their own accounts must be brought under the free limits; the owner cannot permanently transfer the Family allowance to them after expiry.
Troubleshooting common cancellation problems
The subscription is not listed
Verify that you are signed in with the purchasing account, not a shared member’s account. Search the original order email or bank statement to identify whether Microsoft, an app store, or a retailer charged you. Then use that seller’s management page. A product key or redemption account can also differ from the account you currently use for Office.
There is no Cancel button
Look for Turn on recurring billing. That wording normally means renewal is already disabled and the displayed end date controls access. If neither control appears, check whether the subscription has already expired, whether you are in the wrong account, or whether another seller manages billing.
A charge appeared after you thought you cancelled
Compare the charge date with the cancellation confirmation and the subscription’s renewal date. A pending authorization may not be the final settlement. If the seller is Microsoft, review the account’s order history and use the refund flow; if the seller is an app store or retailer, contact that seller. Do not open a second subscription while investigating, because a separate plan can create a new renewal.
A shared person still has access
Access normally continues until the expiry date when only recurring billing was turned off. If you stopped sharing with that person, confirm that the sharing list shows the removal and explain that family-group membership is separate. If benefits remain after the recorded end date, have the person sign out and back in, then check the owner’s subscription status.
A practical cancellation timeline
- Today: Identify the billing channel, sign in to the purchasing account, and turn off renewal or cancel through the correct seller.
- Immediately after confirmation: Record the expiry date, save the confirmation, and review any refund decision shown.
- Before expiry: Audit OneDrive and Outlook usage for the owner and all shared users; download or relocate data that exceeds the free limits.
- At expiry: Expect Family benefits and extra storage to end for the owner and shared users.
- After expiry: Keep each account within its allowed quota. An account that remains over the OneDrive limit can eventually be frozen and may be subject to deletion under Microsoft’s stated three- and six-month guidance.
The safest approach is to treat cancellation as two separate tasks: stop the next payment through the correct billing channel, then prepare every affected account for reduced benefits and storage.
