Micron’s 9650 is a PCIe Gen6 x4 NVMe SSD designed for data centers—not a consumer M.2 drive. Micron reported that it entered high-volume production on March 16, 2026. Its headline specifications are up to 28 GB/s sequential read and 5.5 million random-read IOPS, with E1.S and E3.S enterprise form factors.

What is the Micron 9650?

The 9650 is Micron’s first PCIe Gen6 data-center SSD, built for enterprise storage systems and demanding workloads such as AI training and inference. Micron first presented Gen6 technology to ecosystem partners in 2024, reporting a prototype with more than 26 GB/s sequential-read bandwidth. It announced the 9650 as a product in July 2025, then reported high-volume production in March 2026.

Micron’s “world’s first” description is the company’s own product-positioning claim, not an independently verified industry ranking. The milestones do show the transition from an ecosystem-enablement demonstration to a product Micron says is in high-volume production.

How fast is the Micron 9650?

Micron’s published maximums vary by metric and source. Sequential throughput describes large, continuous transfers; IOPS measures operations per second and is relevant to workloads involving many smaller requests.

Micron’s comparison with the 9550

Micron says the 9650’s maximum sequential-read figure of 28,000 MB/s is 100% higher than the prior-generation 9550’s 14,000 MB/s. Its product brief also gives sequential-read efficiency of 1,120 MB/s per watt versus 560 MB/s per watt for the prior generation at 25 W. These are Micron’s stated comparisons, not independent measurements.

What interface, form factors, and cooling does it use?

The 9650 uses a PCIe Gen6 x4 interface and NVMe 2.0. Micron lists two enterprise form factors:

  • E1.S 9.5 mm: liquid-cooling support is available for this version.
  • E3.S 1T: also listed as a supported form factor; the cited product information does not specify liquid cooling for it.

These are data-center drive formats, not the familiar consumer M.2 format used in many laptops and desktop PCs. A system needs a compatible drive bay, platform, and PCIe Gen6 support to make use of the interface; an E1.S or E3.S SSD is not a drop-in upgrade for an ordinary M.2 slot.

What is inside, and what security options are listed?

Micron describes a vertically integrated design using its DRAM, G9 TLC NAND, controller, firmware, and validation. The G9 NAND has a six-plane architecture, with stated I/O rates up to 3.6 GB/s. Micron says the integrated approach is intended to simplify qualification, though server-level qualification still depends on the platform and deployment.

Listed security and compliance options include SPDM 1.2 device security, self-encrypting-drive options, Micron Secure Execution Environment, FIPS 140-3 Level 2, and TAA-compliant options. These are options rather than a guarantee that every 9650 configuration includes every feature; confirm the specific SKU and requirements with Micron or its channel partner.

What workloads and systems is it intended for?

Micron targets AI training and inference, where storage throughput and latency can affect how effectively accelerators are used. Its March 2026 release says the 9650 is optimized for NVIDIA BlueField-4 STX reference architecture. Micron also describes collaboration with ecosystem participants including Astera Labs and Broadcom, as well as CPU, GPU, platform, and networking designers.

That ecosystem context is not a universal compatibility list. The available information does not name a complete set of supported server models or certify that every Gen6 server supports the drive. For deployment, check the server vendor’s compatibility and qualification information for the exact form factor, cooling configuration, firmware, and workload.

Can you buy the Micron 9650 as a consumer SSD?

The 9650 is positioned as a data-center product, and the available details do not establish an authorized Amazon listing or consumer retail availability. High-volume production is a manufacturing status, not proof that an individual buyer can order a drive through a particular retailer. Organizations evaluating it should contact Micron or enterprise storage suppliers for the relevant capacity, endurance class, security options, and qualified systems.

Micron’s comparison framework distinguishes the 9650 Pro as read-intensive and the 9650 Max as mixed-use. The cited information does not provide endurance figures, capacities, or a detailed SKU-by-SKU specification, so those should be verified for the specific configuration rather than inferred from the family name.
