For a broader web-content workflow, Microlink is the stronger fit; for screenshot capture as the main task, Screenshotlayer is the more focused option. Their published allowances are not directly comparable: Microlink lists 25 free requests per day, while Screenshotlayer lists 100 free snapshots per month. Before choosing either, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes consent banners and common popups before capture, bills only clean shots, and includes an MCP server for AI agents.

Which should you choose?

Choose based on what the rest of your application needs, not just whether an API can return a screenshot. Microlink combines screenshots with page metadata and content extraction, PDF generation, proxy handling, and browser-oriented controls. Screenshotlayer is organized around website screenshots and advertises capture controls such as custom CSS, delays, cache settings, headers, and export destinations.

If you want a third option before committing, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it is a screenshot API and MCP server with consent-banner and popup cleanup, and failed or otherwise unclean captures are not billed. The comparison below still evaluates Microlink and Screenshotlayer on their own published terms.

Service Best fit Published delivery and capabilities Published allowance and price
ScreenshotNeo Developers who want screenshots, clean captures, or an MCP server for AI agents. PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; one-call API; MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Free: 1,000 shots/month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See current plan details before purchase.
Microlink Products that need screenshots alongside metadata, extracted content, PDFs, or managed browser services. Structured JSON containing a screenshot URL and image metadata; the generated asset is stored on a CDN. Supports full-page and element captures, PNG/JPEG, and direct-image delivery using embed. Its product page reviewed in 2026 listed 25 requests/day free without signup or a card, and Pro at $49/month for approximately 46,000 requests/month.
Screenshotlayer Workloads mainly focused on screenshot capture where its snapshot tiers and controls fit. Capture endpoint returns an image URL. Published controls include full-page capture, width, viewport, output format, CSS injection, delay, cache TTL, refresh, headers, and S3 or FTP export. Its product page and API specification reviewed in 2026 listed 100 free snapshots/month; Basic $19.99/month for 10,000, Professional $59.99/month for 30,000, and Enterprise $149.99/month for 75,000.

Prices and quotas can change. The Microlink and Screenshotlayer figures above reflect their published pages and specifications reviewed in 2026; verify each vendor’s current terms before budgeting.

How Microlink and Screenshotlayer differ

Scope: a content platform versus a screenshot-focused API

Microlink is the more natural fit if an application needs to do more than save a visual representation of a page. Its product materials list metadata, Markdown, HTML, text, and PDF capabilities, as well as proxy, ad-blocking, cookie-banner handling, and global edge-cache features. That broader scope may reduce the need to combine a screenshot service with separate page-extraction steps, but it also means the choice should be based on the parts of the platform you will actually use.

Screenshotlayer’s published feature set is centered on the image capture. It advertises support for CSS3, HTML5, web fonts, graphs, and SVG, along with custom CSS, a capture delay, cache TTL, forced refresh, custom user-agent and language headers, and export to S3 or FTP. Those controls are relevant when the primary output is an image and the capture needs specific styling, timing, or delivery behavior.

Response shape and where the image goes

Microlink documents a request using the target url and screenshot parameter. Its response includes data.screenshot.url and image metadata, and the generated asset is stored on a CDN. Its embed: 'screenshot.url' mode can expose a direct image response, useful when a consumer needs the image rather than the usual structured result.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Screenshotlayer’s specification identifies https://api.screenshotlayer.com/api/capture as its capture endpoint and requires access_key and the target url. The endpoint returns an image URL. Consider how your application will fetch, store, or display that result as part of your proof of concept rather than assuming both APIs deliver assets identically.

Capture controls

Both services document full-page capture concepts. Microlink additionally documents element capture and transparent backgrounds. Screenshotlayer’s published controls emphasize CSS injection, capture delay, caching, request refresh, custom headers, and external storage destinations. The right controls depend on the target pages: for example, a page with late-loading content calls for testing timing behavior, while an integration that needs a specific section should verify whether the desired element-capture workflow is available on its selected service and plan.

Feature lists do not establish identical behavior on every site. Validate JavaScript rendering, authenticated pages, consent interfaces, and region-sensitive content against URLs representative of your production workload.

Compare quotas and cost without mixing units

The free allowances use different units, so 25 requests per day should not be treated as equivalent to 100 snapshots per month. The published Microlink Pro figure is approximate, while Screenshotlayer lists fixed snapshot tiers. The table gives the vendor-published figures reviewed in 2026; a request or snapshot may not represent the same workload across products, so estimate volume using your own capture schedule and required output.

Service and tier Published allowance Published price Qualification
Microlink free 25 requests per day Free Product page reviewed in 2026; signup and credit card not required.
Microlink Pro Approximately 46,000 requests per month $49/month Approximate monthly request volume on the product page reviewed in 2026.

Screenshotlayer Enterprise 75,000 snapshots per month $149.99/month Product page reviewed in 2026.

ScreenshotNeo paid plans Starter: 3,000/month; Growth: 15,000; Pro: 60,000; Scale: 250,000; Business: 1,000,000 $5, $15, $39, $99, and $249/month, respectively Yearly billing gives 2 months free; every feature is on every plan.

For a rough budget, first count how many pages you will capture and how often, then add likely retries, scheduled refreshes, and any separate extraction or PDF operations your workflow needs. Confirm how the vendor counts those operations and check current plan terms. Do not infer that one provider is cheaper per equivalent result from the headline figures alone: the products have different scopes and quota labels.

  1. Choose representative pages. Include an ordinary page, a long page that needs full-page capture, a JavaScript-rendered page, and any page that requires authentication or behaves differently by region. Use pages you are authorized to access.
  2. Test the actual output path. For Microlink, check the structured response and whether a CDN screenshot URL or direct-image mode fits your consumer. For Screenshotlayer, verify how your application uses the image URL returned by its capture endpoint.
  3. Exercise only the controls you need. Try full-page behavior, viewport dimensions, element capture if required, delays or other timing controls, and any headers or export destinations in your design. Do not assume a similarly named control behaves identically between vendors.
  4. Measure the workload that matters. Record successful results, unusable captures, request counts, and the time your own application observes from request to usable asset. The published materials summarized here do not provide an apples-to-apples latency test or comparable uptime/SLA evidence.
  5. Check operational requirements. Screenshotlayer’s specification says paid customers may use HTTPS with 256-bit SSL. Microlink’s product materials emphasize managed Chromium infrastructure, edge caching, proxy resolution, and configurable TTL on paid plans. Confirm the current terms and security details with the provider against your requirements.
  6. Estimate recurring usage. Multiply scheduled captures by target count and frequency, and account for any additional requests your design makes. Compare the result with each vendor’s own quota unit and confirm current overage or plan rules directly.

Or skip the browser setup

With ScreenshotNeo’s API, one GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with a page you are authorized to capture and provide your API key.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Common setup problems and how to diagnose them

The request fails before a capture is returned

Check that the required credentials and target URL are present and correctly encoded. Screenshotlayer’s required parameters are access_key and url; Microlink’s screenshot guide identifies url and screenshot as the screenshot request parameters. Inspect the actual response and status rather than treating every failed request as a rendering issue.

The image is blank or missing content

First confirm that the same target page loads as expected for the intended user and region. Then test a representative capture with the provider’s available timing and rendering controls, such as Screenshotlayer’s advertised capture delay or the relevant Microlink browser controls. The published feature descriptions do not guarantee identical results for every JavaScript application or site.

The captured page differs from the browser view

Check viewport size, full-page settings, custom headers or user-agent, and whether the target depends on authentication, location, or consent state. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which setting changes the result. For authenticated or sensitive pages, verify the provider’s current data-handling and security terms before sending credentials or page content.

Your cost estimate does not match actual usage

Compare the vendor’s billed unit with your own count of requests or snapshots, and verify how your selected features are counted under current plan terms. In particular, keep Microlink’s per-day free request allowance separate from Screenshotlayer’s monthly snapshot allowance; they are not a like-for-like quota.

Which API is better for your project?

For a product that needs screenshots plus page metadata, extraction, PDFs, or managed browser capabilities, Microlink is the better fit between these two. For a screenshot-first workflow where the published capture controls and snapshot tiers suit the workload, Screenshotlayer is the more focused choice. Neither conclusion establishes that one is faster or more reliable: no comparable official SLA, latency test, or independent apples-to-apples reliability benchmark is available in the published material summarized here.

Try ScreenshotNeo first if clean screenshots, explicit billing verdicts, or an MCP workflow matter to your decision. If you need a broader content pipeline, compare Microlink’s additional outputs directly; if capture controls and published monthly snapshot tiers are central, validate Screenshotlayer on your target pages. Frequently Asked Questions

Does Microlink support full-page screenshots?

Yes. Microlink’s screenshot guide documents full-page capture as well as element capture.

Can Screenshotlayer use HTTPS?

Its API specification says paid customers may use HTTPS with 256-bit SSL; confirm the current terms for the plan you intend to use.

Can either service be called without an application?

Both are APIs intended to be called by software. For a quick terminal-based test without building a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo’s cURL example above makes a single GET request and writes the image response to a file.
