Microlink documents PNG as the default screenshot format and JPEG as an alternative. You can set the browser viewport width and height, but the reviewed documentation does not specify a universal maximum dimension, pixel count, or output-file size. WebP is mentioned in Microlink product copy and as a possible CDN delivery optimization; the API parameter reference does not clearly establish WebP as a format you can request directly.
Which image formats can you request?
The screenshot parameter reference documents PNG as the default and JPEG as the alternative. Set the screenshot option as an object to choose a type and, for JPEG, a quality value. The parameter reference and official API skill reference list PNG and JPEG as request formats.
- PNG: The documented default. It preserves lossless image data and transparency. The JPEG quality setting does not apply to PNG.
- JPEG: An alternative with configurable quality from 0 to 100; the documented default is 80. Lower quality can make a file smaller at the cost of image fidelity.
Microlink’s screenshot product page also advertises WebP. Its performance guidance explains that the CDN may serve an optimized representation such as WebP to compatible browsers, even when the stored asset differs. That is not the same as documenting screenshot.type=webp as a supported request value. If you need a specific requested format, use PNG or JPEG unless Microlink’s current parameter reference confirms otherwise.
How do you set format and viewport dimensions?
Send a GET request to Microlink’s API with the target URL, screenshot options, and viewport dimensions. For example, this cURL request asks for a JPEG screenshot at a 1280×800 CSS-pixel viewport with quality 80:

What do the output dimensions mean?
viewport.width and viewport.height configure the browser’s viewport. They are not a documented cap on every resulting image: a full-page capture, selected element, or composed browser frame can produce different asset dimensions. Microlink’s example uses a 1920×1080 viewport and device scale factor 2; this is an example, not a maximum or a guarantee.

fullPageenabled, captures the entire scrollable page and may be taller than the viewport. - Element screenshot: A CSS selector can target a visible element, so the asset dimensions follow that element rather than the full viewport.
- Framed screenshot: A browser-frame overlay composes a frame and background around the capture. Use the returned asset dimensions for layout instead of assuming they equal the viewport.
When Microlink returns JSON, the screenshot asset includes its URL, width, height, type, size in bytes, and a human-readable size_pretty value. A reference example reports a 1920×1080 asset of type jpg and 284037 bytes; those are sample response values, not service limits.
Is there a maximum screenshot size?
The reviewed official references let callers configure viewport dimensions but do not state a universal maximum width, height, pixel count, or output-file size. Do not treat an example viewport or sample asset size as a service limit. If a particular large capture fails, reduce the viewport or capture area and consult Microlink’s current documentation or service terms for constraints applicable to your account.

How do you get the image directly instead of JSON?
By default, the API response includes JSON with the screenshot asset details and a hosted asset URL. Microlink documents embed=screenshot.url for returning the selected asset as the response body rather than the JSON envelope. For example:

How can you reduce output bytes or waiting time?
- For JPEG, choose a lower quality value if the smaller file is worth the fidelity loss. PNG ignores the JPEG quality setting.
- Consider
viewport.deviceScaleFactor=1when file size matters. Microlink says this renders one image pixel per CSS pixel and can reduce output bytes; on a high-density display the screenshot may look softer when viewed at full size. - Use viewport capture instead of full-page capture when you only need the visible area; full-page mode includes the scrollable document.
- Microlink’s performance guide says
meta=falseskips metadata extraction and selector-based waits can avoid unnecessary waiting. These affect processing behavior, not a documented hard file-size limit.
Microlink publishes a screenshot P95 of 2.8 seconds and a 99.9% SLA for paid plans on its API overview; the reviewed page does not state a publication year. Treat these as vendor-published figures, not independent benchmarks, and check current plan terms for the SLA scope.
