MicroBeast is a build-your-own Z80 computer that folds a keyboard and display into a compact, standalone machine. It runs CP/M 2.2, includes 512K RAM and 512K flash ROM, and offers USB-C, GPIO, I2C, and RC2014-compatible expansion. It is a hands-on kit, not a ready-to-use appliance: the surface-mount parts arrive assembled, but you still solder through-hole components and use basic hand tools.
What is MicroBeast?
MicroBeast is a hobbyist 8-bit computer built around a Z80 processor. Unlike a single-board computer that expects an external keyboard and monitor, it integrates its own keyboard and character display in a folding enclosure. The manufacturer describes it as a complete standalone computer intended for building, learning, and experimentation. Those are design aims, not independently measured educational outcomes.
The project’s earlier Hackster coverage described it as a foldable computer and discussed learning low-level concepts such as registers and Boolean operations. That article reflects an earlier point in the product’s development; the manufacturer’s current product page is the better reference for specifications.
MicroBeast specifications and connections
| Feature | Manufacturer’s current specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Z80 CPU, 8–10 MHz |
| Memory | 512K RAM and 512K flash ROM |
| Operating system and firmware | CP/M 2.2 and a custom BIOS; flash ROM is supplied with a basic monitor and CP/M 2.2 |
| Display | 24-character, 14-segment display |
| Keyboard | 47 keys |
| Power and data | USB-C; auxiliary power input |
| Expansion and interfaces | 12 GPIO I/O pins, I2C header, and RC2014-compatible expansion port |
| Other hardware | Battery-backed real-time clock, speaker, and FTDI header |
The manufacturer lists 47 keys. The older Hackster article says 48, so use the current manufacturer specification when the exact count matters. The manufacturer also cautions that MicroBeast is a hobby project in continuous development, which means specifications and product information can change.

What comes in the kit?
The shop listing describes a kit that includes the MicroBeast box; a PCB with surface-mount components already fitted; through-hole components and ICs; keyboard switches and keycaps; a keyboard frame and mounting blocks; keycap stickers; a display filter; and a fold-out instruction booklet with schematics. The flash ROM is preloaded with a basic monitor and CP/M 2.2.
Pre-assembling the surface-mount parts reduces the work, but this is still a soldering project. The maker says builders need a soldering iron, solder, flux, side-snips, a 2 mm Allen key, and needle-nose pliers. An anti-static wristband and mat are recommended, and a multimeter can be used for basic checks. The soldering iron and other tools are not listed as kit contents.

What can you do with it?
Use CP/M on a self-contained machine
MicroBeast is designed to boot into CP/M 2.2, the classic operating system for Z80-era computers. Its onboard keyboard and display let it operate as a standalone system rather than requiring a separate computer for basic interaction.
Explore the hardware
The GPIO pins, I2C header, and RC2014-compatible expansion port provide ways to connect hardware and extend the system. USB-C supports power and data, while the FTDI header and custom BIOS give builders additional avenues for working with the machine. The manufacturer presents experimentation and expansion as goals; the connectors alone do not establish compatibility with every peripheral or guarantee a particular project will work.

Learn by building and experimenting
Assembly and access to the underlying hardware can make MicroBeast a tangible way to explore how a small 8-bit computer is put together. It is best suited to someone willing to solder and work through a kit’s instructions, rather than someone looking only for a finished retro computer. The available product information does not quantify learning outcomes.
Ordering, price, and availability
The manufacturer’s shop lists the kit at £150, with approximate equivalents of $198 or €172 before tax and postage. The shop says it accepts pre-orders because kits are assembled in small batches, and that it will contact customers to confirm payment and delivery options when a kit can be fulfilled. It also states that a 10% import-duty charge is added for kits sent to the United States. These are shop-page terms and prices, which can change; check the current listing for stock, total cost, taxes, shipping, and timing before ordering.

Is MicroBeast a good fit?
- Consider it if you want a Z80-based kit with an integrated keyboard and display, CP/M, and accessible expansion connections—and are comfortable soldering through-hole parts.
- Look elsewhere if you need a ready-assembled computer, want a modern graphical display, or do not have access to the required tools and assembly skills.
- Plan for uncertainty if timing is important: the maker describes small-batch pre-orders rather than a guaranteed immediate shipment.
MicroBeast occupies a specific niche: a foldable, self-contained computer for people who want to build and explore a real 8-bit Z80 system. Its mix of onboard input and display, CP/M, and expansion interfaces makes the concept distinctive, while soldering and small-batch ordering make it a project to approach with realistic expectations.
