Secure blockchain nodes by allowing only the communication each role needs: peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic for approved peers, and private or explicitly trusted access for RPC, metrics, health checks, and administration. There is no universal port list; rules must match the chain, client, configuration, and deployment.

What micro-segmentation means for blockchain nodes

Micro-segmentation divides a node deployment into roles and limits network traffic between them. Instead of treating every machine in a network as equally trusted, define which sources may reach each destination, over which protocol and port, and for what purpose.

The key distinction is between P2P communication—which nodes may need to discover and communicate with peers—and services used to query or administer a node. An endpoint being useful to an operator does not mean it should be publicly reachable.

Start with roles and required flows

Inventory the roles in the deployment before writing firewall rules. A validator or core node, sentry, observer, public RPC gateway, monitoring system, and management host may need different policies. For each role, record inbound and outbound flows by source, destination, protocol, port, and purpose. Include peer discovery, failover, and other requirements documented for the chain.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Validator or core node: Keep it on a private network where possible. Permit consensus or peer traffic only from approved validator or sentry peers when the chain supports that design.
  • Sentry or gateway: Use a separate, public-facing role when the network needs public P2P entry points. Avoid making a core validator public merely for convenience.
  • Observer or public RPC gateway: Give public-facing services their own role and firewall policy. Do not assume that an RPC endpoint intended for applications should also be reachable on the validator itself.
  • Monitoring and management: Keep metrics, health, and administrative endpoints on a management network or restrict them to explicitly trusted systems.

Why P2P and RPC need different rules

P2P traffic supports communication among network peers. RPC provides an interface for clients or operators to query or interact with a node. They are not interchangeable services and should not share an exposure policy by default.

Geth’s security guidance advises permitting configured TCP and UDP P2P traffic while blocking RPC except for explicitly trusted machines. Ethereum.org likewise warns that public RPC exposure can let anyone control a node and may bring it down or put funds at risk if the node is used as a wallet. For remote operator access, use a private interface or a controlled gateway; Ethereum.org also discusses proxy and VPN approaches in its node guide.

Do not copy a port list from another chain

Port numbers depend on the chain, client, configuration, and role. As one Ethereum example, ethereum.org describes execution-client defaults of TCP and UDP 30303 for peer networking and 8545 for JSON-RPC, while noting that clients differ and ports can be configured. These are defaults for that documented context, not a universal blockchain firewall template.

Check the documentation for the exact deployed chain and client, then verify the actual listening interfaces and configured ports. For example, Geth’s security page was last edited January 12, 2024; operators should confirm its guidance against the version they run. Other chain documentation may specify reserved peers, whitelisting, or different requirements.

Build and enforce the policy

  1. Map the topology: Identify node roles, network zones, trusted operator systems, monitoring services, and any public entry points.
  2. Document each flow: For each required connection, name the source and destination, protocol, configured port, and operational purpose. Include documented discovery and failover needs.
  3. Choose enforcement points: Apply boundaries outside the node process, using host firewalls, cloud security groups or firewalls, or container and orchestration network policies. More than one layer may be appropriate.
  4. Default sensitive endpoints to private: Bind RPC, metrics, health, and administrative services to localhost or a private interface when remote access is unnecessary. If remote access is required, allow only named trusted systems or place a controlled gateway in front.
  5. Expose only what the role requires: Configure public P2P access at the intended sentry, observer, or gateway when needed. Keep core validators private where the chain’s topology permits.
  6. Review egress as well as ingress: Where supported, restrict outbound connections to approved peers and required services, such as DNS, time, telemetry, and software updates. Confirm the chain’s requirements before denying destinations.
  7. Observe and maintain the rules: Log rejected traffic and review sustained scans, unexpected destinations, and signs of connection exhaustion. Telcoin’s validator operations guidance specifically recommends rejection logging and alerting. Revalidate rules after client upgrades, peer-list changes, or topology changes.

Choose controls that fit the deployment

Host firewalls, cloud network controls, and container policies enforce boundaries at different layers. Compare them by where they apply, whether they restrict both ingress and egress, how precisely they identify allowed sources, how denied traffic is inspected, what happens when a policy fails, and how allowlists are updated.

For containerized nodes, expose only the ports the role needs. Polymesh’s Docker node documentation cautions operators to limit exposed ports and treat RPC carefully. Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform 4.19 network-security documentation is an example of orchestration network policies for east-west and selected egress traffic; it is specific to that platform, not a universal prescription.

A dedicated hardware firewall is optional, not a requirement established by these node guides. Software firewalls, cloud controls, or orchestration policies may be suitable depending on where the nodes run and how the operator manages network boundaries.

Operational checks before and after deployment

  • Confirm that each public listener is intentional and belongs to the correct node role.
  • Verify that RPC, metrics, health, and management endpoints are not reachable from untrusted networks.
  • Test permitted peer and operator connections, including documented failover paths, before tightening production rules.
  • Check logs for rejected traffic and investigate unexpected connection sources or repeated attempts.
  • Review policy whenever client settings, trusted peer addresses, or deployment topology changes; allowlists are operational data, not permanent constants.

Chain-specific examples reinforce the need to verify the deployment rather than rely on a generic matrix: Provenance’s validator firewall guidance distinguishes P2P from RPC and recommends zones or private networks, while Polymesh’s node operator guide covers reserved peers and firewall whitelisting.
