The game most likely behind the headline is Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a new 2D action-adventure from Konami and Evil Empire. The identification is a strong inference, not confirmed by the headline’s original publisher. Reporting describes a city built for exploration and says the game will not be a roguelike—even though Evil Empire is known for Dead Cells.
Which game is the headline referring to?
The best-supported match is Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. A September 16, 2026 roundup reports that it is due October 15, 2026, but the exact headline’s original page was not found, so the match should be treated as likely rather than certain. The reported release date is secondary reporting, not independently confirmed here by a publisher announcement. PC Gamer’s April 9 report and the September roundup support the identification. What kind of game is Belmont’s Curse?
PC Gamer reported that Konami and Evil Empire described it as a 2D action-adventure focused on exploration, with inspiration from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Evil Empire developer Matt called it a “2D action adventure world,” while Konami producer Tsutomu Taniguchi said the team drew significant inspiration from Symphony of the Night for its exploration-oriented design. PC Gamer reports those developer comments.
An explorable city, not just a sequence of fights
Lead level designer Sandro described a city that players can explore from below the streets to the rooftops, moving through both indoor and outdoor spaces. That points to vertical traversal and exploration as important parts of the design. The report does not establish the full map structure, how progression works, or how much freedom players will have between areas.

Is it a Dead Cells-style roguelike?
No: an Evil Empire developer reportedly answered “No it won’t” when asked whether Belmont’s Curse would be a roguelike. That distinction matters because Dead Cells is associated with repeated runs, while the comments reported by PC Gamer frame this game around exploration and an action-adventure world. The studio connection is not evidence that the new game shares Dead Cells’ structure.
The available reporting supports a contrast between run-based roguelike design and exploration-led action adventure, but it does not establish every detail of how Belmont’s Curse handles death, checkpoints, upgrades, or map persistence. Those mechanics should not be assumed from the genre label alone.

How does the Metroid comparison fit?
“Metroid” in the headline is best read as a shorthand for exploration and navigation through a connected-feeling world, not as confirmation of specific mechanics. The developer comments describe a city with vertical routes and interior and exterior spaces, and the reported Symphony of the Night influence places the game in a tradition closely associated with exploration-led action adventures. The reporting does not confirm a particular ability-gated map system or provide hands-on evidence about how the game plays.
What is known about the release?
A September 16, 2026 roundup reports an October 15, 2026 release date and identifies Rose Belmont as the protagonist in late 15th-century Paris. These details are secondary reporting; regional launch availability and publisher-confirmed platform information are not established here. Price and physical-edition availability are also unconfirmed in the available reporting. Check Konami’s official listings for current platform and regional release details before making a purchase decision.
