No: do not put a raw fbclid query-string value directly into user_data.fbc. The incoming fbclid is a click identifier in the landing URL; fbc is the value associated with Meta’s _fbc cookie. A Conversions API request can still return HTTP 200 even when the identifier is represented incorrectly, so verify the event separately in Events Manager.
What fbclid and fbc mean
fbclid arrives as a query parameter on a landing-page URL. Meta’s _fbc cookie holds the corresponding click-ID value in the format used for the fbc field in a Conversions API event. They are related, but they are not interchangeable strings.
Meta’s Node.js parameter-builder processes the incoming request context and returns values for use in event data, including fbc. Its example places fbc inside the event’s user_data object. Use the value associated with the _fbc cookie, or let an implementation construct it from request or browser context, rather than copying the raw query parameter into the API field. See Meta’s Node.js parameter-builder example.

- Capture the initial request context. Read the landing request before redirects or later page views can remove the query parameter. Meta’s parameter-builder example processes request context for
fbc, fbp, client IP address, event source URL, and referrer URL. - Obtain the cookie value. Read the existing
_fbccookie, or use Meta’s builder to derive the appropriate value from the incoming request or browser context. - Keep the value consistent. Meta recommends saving returned cookie values as first-party cookies so the value can be reused consistently across events.
- Put it in the right place. Include
fbcinside the event’suser_dataobject in the outbound CAPI JSON. Meta’s example shows it alongside other user-data fields. - Inspect what you actually sent. Check the outbound JSON and confirm that
user_data.fbccontains the cookie-associated or builder-produced value, not simply the rawfbclidquery value.
An alternative is Meta’s client-side parameter builder. Its documentation describes collecting and storing the cookie value from browser context, including fbclid. Collection is asynchronous: await the collection method before reading values, or a getter may return an empty or stale cookie. See Meta’s client-side parameter-builder documentation.

Why a CAPI POST can return 200 anyway
An HTTP success response confirms a response at the API or transport level; it does not establish that the event was attributed to an ad, matched to a person, deduplicated as intended, or represented with the right click identifier. Meta’s Conversions API: Direct Integration Playbook explains that a valid event payload receives a 2xx response, while separately directing implementers to inspect processing and match quality. A 200 alone is not proof of correct attribution or match quality. See Meta’s Conversions API: Direct Integration Playbook.
The playbook also identifies required event parameters and says events missing those parameters will not be processed. It treats click ID fbc as an additional matching parameter, not as one of the required event parameters in the inspected section. Do not assume that every malformed fbc will produce a particular HTTP status or rejection.

Meta does not hash fbc. It is sent as an additional matching parameter, so do not apply hashing to it as though it were a hashed contact identifier.

How to verify the event and troubleshoot it
- Check Test Events. In Events Manager, confirm that the event arrived and inspect its details.
- Review processing status. Check whether Meta reports the event as received, processed, or ignored; an HTTP 200 does not answer that question.
- Review Event Match Quality. Treat match quality as a separate diagnostic from the API response code.
- Compare payload and browser context. Verify the exact outbound
user_data.fbc, the landing request’s query and cookie context, and whether capture happened before a redirect or later navigation. - Check asynchronous collection. If using Meta’s client-side builder, ensure collection has completed before reading the cookie-derived value.
Meta’s playbook says, “The Conversions API returns minimal data to conserve network bandwidth. If the event payload is valid, a 2xx HTTP response code is returned.” The response code is therefore useful, but it is not a substitute for checking event processing and match quality in Events Manager.

What is and is not established about the mismatch
The documentation establishes that raw fbclid and the cookie-associated fbc value have different roles, and that the correct value belongs in user_data.fbc. It does not quantify how often copying the raw query value harms attribution or provide a percentage for the effect. The practical response is to correct the data flow and verify processing and match quality, rather than infer success from a 200 response.
