These are different documented approaches, not proof that one assistant is more accurate, private, or useful. What each account can do depends on its settings and availability.
How Meta AI and ChatGPT use context differently
“Memory” can mean stored details from conversations, information drawn from previous chats, or other context used to tailor a response. The companies’ published descriptions cover different ground: OpenAI lists several potential context sources for ChatGPT, while Meta’s January 27, 2025 announcement describes conversational memory alongside personalization using Facebook and Instagram-related signals.

What ChatGPT means by memory
OpenAI distinguishes two mechanisms that are easy to conflate. Saved memories are details ChatGPT saves or that a user asks it to remember; they are stored separately from chat history. Reference chat history lets relevant information from previous conversations inform future responses, but it is not a complete record and can change as ChatGPT updates what it considers useful. Other context sources
Depending on the account’s experience, ChatGPT may also use custom instructions, files in Library, and connected-app content. OpenAI says feature availability varies by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings, so the options shown in one account may not match another’s.

Reviewing and correcting what ChatGPT remembers
Memory controls may include a summary and management options such as Manage or Saved memories. A summary is a high-level view rather than a complete inventory, and source details shown with responses may not reveal every factor that influenced an answer. Controls can vary by experience.
To remove information comprehensively, OpenAI says users may need to delete it from memory controls and from its original sources, including chats, files, or connected apps. Deletion and updates can take time to propagate; OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

Turning off memory is not the same as deleting it
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats, and deleting a chat alone may leave a separate saved memory. OpenAI says turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days; the original conversations remain unless deleted separately. These are distinct actions, so check both the memory controls and the source material when removing something.
Temporary chats and model improvement
Temporary chats do not create or update memories. Before starting one, users can choose whether it uses existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; that choice cannot be changed once the chat begins. If a temporary chat is saved, it becomes a regular chat and follows the account’s personalization settings.

OpenAI treats personalization and model improvement as separate settings. For personal ChatGPT accounts, chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when “Improve the model for everyone” is on. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default. (OpenAI Help Center)
What Meta has described about Meta AI
Meta’s January 27, 2025 announcement described two related but distinct capabilities. First, a gradual “Memory Boost” rollout was said to let Meta AI remember certain details shared in one-to-one WhatsApp and Messenger conversations. Meta said the assistant could retain information a user explicitly asked it to remember or pick up relevant information from context; the described memory behavior did not include group chats.

Second, Meta described a “more personal touch” on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Its example combined a person’s Facebook profile location, recent views of music-related Reels, and remembered family information to tailor a weekend suggestion. These were company examples of possible behavior, not independently tested results. Meta summarized the announced chat-memory behavior this way: “Meta AI will only remember certain things you tell it in 1:1 conversations (not group chats), and you can delete its memories at any time.” (Meta Newsroom)
What the announcement does not settle
The announcement said the memory feature was rolling out to Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp on iOS and Android in the US and Canada at that time, and described personalization rollout in the US and Canada. Those are dated rollout details, not confirmation of current availability. The announcement also does not establish current retention periods, the full deletion process, or a detailed review-and-correction workflow. A related Facebook Help Center page titled “Have Meta AI remember details about you while chatting on Facebook” could not be accessed, so its control steps cannot be confirmed here.

Which settings should you check?
Because the documented features and availability can vary, use the controls shown in your own account rather than assuming a feature is active everywhere.
- In ChatGPT: Open Settings and look for Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, the Memory summary, or memory management options such as Manage or Saved memories. Labels and availability can differ by account.
- In Meta AI: Check the current in-app settings and help information for the Meta service you use. Meta’s cited announcement confirms an announced ability to delete memories but does not provide a current, verified control path.
If your main concern is what may shape an answer, ChatGPT’s published documentation enumerates several possible sources; Meta’s announcement describes chat details as well as profile and Reels activity. If your concern is removal, ChatGPT’s documentation distinguishes turning memory off from deleting remembered information and its source. For Meta, verify the current controls in your account rather than assuming the 2025 announcement describes today’s full process.
