The Mesa 4C81 supports wireless through an expansion socket, not built-in Wi-Fi. Mesa’s manual specifies one Mini-PCI Type 3A socket for a Wi-Fi card or another Mini-PCI device, but does not identify tested wireless cards, drivers, or supported Wi-Fi standards. It is a legacy 166 MHz ARM-based PC/104-PCI board designed for networked applications.
How wireless works on the 4C81
The 4C81 has a single Mini-PCI Type 3A socket, identified in Mesa’s 4C81 manual, version 2.1 as slot 0 on the PCI expansion bus. Mesa describes the socket as suitable for a Wi-Fi card or another Mini-PCI device. It is an expansion option; the board does not have documented built-in Wi-Fi.
The manual does not name compatible wireless cards, specify a Wi-Fi generation or security standard, or document antenna connections and wireless drivers. It also does not establish that a contemporary Mini-PCI card—or a Mini PCI Express card—will work. Mini-PCI Type 3A and Mini PCI Express are different form factors; match the socket precisely and seek evidence for the exact card, operating system, and antenna arrangement before planning a deployment.
What to verify before choosing a wireless card
- Physical fit: Confirm the card is Mini-PCI Type 3A, not Mini PCI Express or another Mini-PCI variant.
- Software support: Mesa lists Linux and NetBSD support for the 4C81, but the available documentation does not confirm current OS maintenance or compatibility with any particular wireless driver. Check the driver requirements for the specific target OS and version.
- Antenna and installation: The manual does not specify antenna connectors or arrangements. Confirm the card’s antenna requirements can be met in the intended enclosure.
- Evidence of operation: Ask for documentation or test results for the exact card on a 4C81. A card’s form-factor fit alone does not prove that its driver, radio, or antenna setup will work.
No particular Wi-Fi card is verified here, and current board stock and secondhand pricing are not established.

The manual also documents an RS-232 serial console, 36 I/O bits implemented with either a CPLD or optional Spartan-3 FPGA, and netboot with NFS support. These features may matter when integrating the board into an embedded networked system.
Power and PC/104-PCI card cautions
The board itself requires 5 V, supplied through its serial console/power connector or the PC/104-PLUS bus. Its PCI bus is 3.3 V. Mesa’s manual says it accepts 3.3 V or universal PC/104-PCI cards; 5 V cards are unsupported and may damage the 4C81.

Slot allocation also matters when adding PCI cards: slot 0 is reserved for the Mini-PCI device, slots 1 and 2 support bus-master cards, and slot 3 may be used by a non-bus-master card. Check the voltage and bus-master requirements of each add-on card against the manual before installation.

Mesa describes the 4C81 as a low-power board designed for networked applications. Its Ethernet ports and Mini-PCI socket provide documented networking options, but the published specifications do not establish end-to-end wireless performance, compatibility with a named card, or support for a current Linux or NetBSD release.

The board is a legacy product in the available documentation. EE Times published an announcement on 2006-09-12 that listed a $149 price for quantities of 100 for a 32 MB RAM/32 MB Flash configuration. That is a historical price, not a current offer or guide to present-day secondhand value.
