You can reduce avoidable Git merge conflicts, but you cannot guarantee that none will occur. Git can combine compatible edits; when two branches make competing changes to the same area, it cannot know which behavior the team intends. Better coordination and frequent integration can expose overlap sooner, while careful resolution and tools such as rerere can make recurring conflicts less costly.

Why do merge conflicts still happen?

Git compares the changes made on each branch since their common ancestor. When only one branch changes an area—or both changes are compatible—Git can usually combine them. When both sides change the same area in conflicting ways, Git pauses and asks for a human decision. The Git merge manual puts the reason plainly: “When both sides made changes to the same area, however, Git cannot randomly pick one side over the other, and asks you to resolve it by leaving what both sides did to that area.”

A conflict is therefore not evidence that Git is broken. It signals that Git cannot safely infer the intended combined result. Two branches may have changed the same lines for good reasons, and the correct resolution may need to preserve both intentions, adapt one, or choose a different implementation.

Why more time between integrations can matter

When branches go a while without being integrated, each can accumulate changes that the other branch does not yet contain. That gives competing edits more opportunity to meet during a later merge. This is workflow reasoning, not a measured rule: Git’s documentation does not quantify conflict likelihood by branch age, team size, or number of contributors.

How to reduce avoidable conflicts

These practices address the conditions that create overlap. They can reduce avoidable collisions or make them visible earlier, but they do not guarantee clean merges.

  • Coordinate work in shared areas. If several people expect to edit the same file or region, agree on ownership or communicate what each change is meant to do. The aim is to catch competing plans before they diverge.
  • Integrate changes as they become ready. Shorter feedback cycles can reveal overlapping edits earlier, when the people involved still have context. Early integration does not mean every merge will be conflict-free.
  • Keep changes focused where practical. Avoid unrelated edits in the same change when they make review or resolution harder. Smaller, focused changes can make intent clearer, though Git’s manuals do not quantify an effect on conflict frequency.
  • Agree on intended behavior, not just file ownership. Two people can make legitimate changes to one file. Discussing the behavior each change should produce helps the team decide how the changes fit together if they collide.

How to resolve a conflict without losing intent

For a text-file conflict, Git commonly marks the competing sections with <<<<<<<, =======, and >>>>>>>. The text above the separator represents one side, and the text below it the other. Do not select “ours” or “theirs” automatically: first work out what each side was trying to change and what the combined behavior should be. The Git user manual describes these competing edits and the need to resolve them.

Show the common ancestor for more context

When the two sides are hard to interpret, Git’s diff3 and zdiff3 conflict styles include the common ancestor’s text alongside both versions. Comparing all three can reveal what each branch changed from the original, rather than forcing you to infer the starting point from two competing results. The available styles and their output are documented in the Git merge manual.

Make and verify the resolution

  1. Read both sides of each conflict and, if useful, the common-ancestor text. Identify the intended behavior before editing.
  2. Edit the file so it contains the intended result, removing conflict markers where they appear. Do not leave a resolution that merely looks syntactically tidy if it drops required behavior from one side.
  3. Inspect the edited file and run the checks appropriate to the project, such as its tests or build. Git cannot verify that your chosen behavior is correct.
  4. Stage each resolved file and complete the merge using the workflow your repository uses. Staging records your resolution; it does not replace reviewing or testing it.

Use a merge tool when visual comparison helps

git mergetool can launch a configured utility to help compare and resolve conflicted files. The Git mergetool manual lists options including KDiff3, Meld, and Vimdiff. A visual tool can make differences easier to inspect, but the developer still has to choose and verify the result.

Can Git remember a previous resolution?

Yes. Git’s rerere feature—short for “reuse recorded resolution”—can record a conflicted automerge result and the corresponding manual resolution. If Git encounters a matching conflict again, it can apply the recorded resolution. This is useful when, for example, you repeatedly test merges or rebase a topic branch and encounter the same conflict.

rerere saves repeated manual work; it does not stop the branches from conflicting in the first place. A reused resolution still needs inspection. The Git rerere manual explains that Git leaves the index alone after applying a resolution and recommends a final sanity check before staging. Check the documentation for the Git version installed in your environment when configuring or relying on this feature.

What about merge drivers that avoid conflict markers?

Git attributes can select built-in or custom merge drivers for particular files. One built-in option, the union driver, takes lines from both sides instead of leaving conflict markers. That does not necessarily produce a meaningful result: Git warns that the added lines may end up in random order. Use such a driver only when the file format and ordering make that behavior safe, and verify the output. See the Git attributes manual.

Merge drivers and merge tools handle particular file types or assist with a resolution; neither makes all conflicts preventable. Avoid applying an automatic strategy broadly unless you understand what it does to the files in question.

Which approach helps with which problem?

rerere

Approach What it helps with What it does not do
Coordination and frequent integration Reduce avoidable overlap or reveal competing edits earlier. Guarantee a conflict-free merge.
diff3 or zdiff3 Give a person the common ancestor as context for resolving a conflict. Choose the intended combined behavior.
git mergetool Help compare and edit competing versions with a configured utility. Replace the need to review the resolution.
Reuse a matching resolution that was recorded previously. Prevent the original conflict or make review unnecessary.
A merge driver such as union Apply file-specific merge behavior, such as taking lines from both sides. Ensure the result is correctly ordered or valid for every file.

These distinctions follow from the documented roles of Git’s merge styles, merge tools, rerere, and merge drivers.
