In Pakistan, you can start looking for mental-health care through a primary-care clinician, a hospital outpatient service, or a qualified mental-health provider; the route depends on the provider, facility, condition, and locality. Ask about qualifications, referral requirements, confidentiality limits, and the full expected cost before booking. The available national evidence does not establish a single referral rule, a current city-by-city directory, or a reliable national fee list.

How do I find a psychiatrist or psychologist in Pakistan?

Start with the kind of help you are seeking. Counselling and psychosocial support may help with emotional or practical difficulties; a psychiatrist can assess mental-health conditions and discuss medical treatment, including medication where appropriate. Services and provider roles can vary, so ask what a particular practitioner is qualified to provide rather than relying on a job title alone.

A primary-care clinician or hospital outpatient service may help you identify an appropriate service and referral route. Pakistan-focused clinical guidance describes referral pathways for psychiatric conditions tailored to local settings, but does not establish one route that every provider or locality must use.

Availability can be constrained and uneven. The Commonwealth Fund’s 2026 Pakistan country profile reports 0.1 psychiatrists and 0.5 mental-health professionals per 100,000 people in 2020. These are historical national rates, not current counts for a particular city or a measure of local appointment availability.

Questions to ask a potential provider

  • What are your qualifications and registration status, and which services are you qualified to provide?
  • Do you regularly work with my concern or with people in my age group?
  • What approach do you use, and what would the first few appointments involve?
  • If my needs are outside your training or service, where would you refer me?
  • Do I need a referral, and if so, from whom?
  • What languages, appointment formats, and accessibility arrangements are available?

The 2025 Code of Conduct for Mental Health Professionals says providers should meet minimum qualifications for their service, use evidence-based approaches, and refer a service user when they do not have the necessary qualification or training. It also emphasizes affordability and geographic access. The code is guidance; its status as a statute or its jurisdictional reach should not be assumed.

Compare the service, not just the label

Public hospital services, private clinics, NGO support, and remote counselling may differ in travel, appointment availability, provider experience, language, privacy practices, crisis escalation, and cost. The evidence available nationally does not provide comparable provider-level prices or current wait times. Ask each service the same practical questions before deciding, and check whether remote care has a clear plan for urgent situations.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist in Pakistan?

There is no established national answer that applies to every psychiatrist, hospital, or locality. Pakistan-specific clinical guidance includes primary-care referral pathways, but the available evidence does not show that a referral is always required—or never required. Requirements may depend on the condition, provider, province, and facility.

Contact the clinic or hospital outpatient department before travelling. Ask whether self-referral is accepted, whether a primary-care note or other document is needed, and whether the answer differs for an initial assessment and follow-up. If you are unsure where to start, a primary-care clinician or hospital outpatient service may be able to explain the local route.

Will a therapist keep what I say confidential?

Privacy is a reasonable expectation, but it is not an absolute promise of secrecy. Punjab Directorate General of Health Services guidance says providers should protect patient privacy, records, and secrets, while allowing disclosure when required by law or in the patient’s health-care interest. The Code of Conduct for Mental Health Professionals, 2025, describes keeping identifiable information confidential and using data-safety measures; it also recognizes safety-related sharing when there is a serious risk of harm to the person or others. These sources should not be treated as establishing one identical rule across all provinces and providers.

Before your first appointment, ask what information is recorded, who can access it, how phone, messaging, and digital records are stored, and whether family members can receive information. Also ask what the provider would do if they believed you or someone else faced serious danger, including whether they might involve another person or emergency contact. Provider obligations, age, legal duties, and the circumstances can affect how confidentiality is handled.

How much does therapy cost in Pakistan?

The available evidence does not establish a reliable national price for a therapy session, psychiatric consultation, or follow-up. Fees and other charges can vary by provider and service, so ask for a written or clearly itemized estimate rather than treating a general figure as a local price.

For context only, the Commonwealth Fund’s 2026 Pakistan country profile reports that out-of-pocket payments accounted for 47.4% of total health expenditure. It also reports Pakistan Bureau of Statistics figures of more than PKR 983 billion in overall out-of-pocket health spending in 2021–22, or PKR 4,334 per person annually. These are health-system-wide figures, not mental-health prices or estimates of what an individual appointment should cost.

Ask for the full anticipated cost

  • What is the first-visit fee, and what is the follow-up fee?
  • How long is each appointment, and does the fee change with appointment length?
  • Could medication, tests, or reports add costs, and who provides an estimate for them?
  • Are there cancellation charges, lower-fee appointments, or public-service options?
  • Does this specific service require a referral?
  • Will the provider check whether my current health scheme covers this service, and are there copayments?

Does Sehat Sahulat cover mental-health treatment?

Do not assume that Sehat Sahulat covers a particular mental-health consultation, therapy service, medicine, or facility. The Commonwealth Fund’s 2026 Pakistan country profile says participation varies by region and reports that Punjab withdrew the program in 2025. Coverage and eligibility can change, so confirm your current status directly with the program or the facility before arranging care.

Ask specifically whether your province and eligibility category are covered, whether the facility participates, whether the service and any prescribed medicines are included, and whether you would owe a copayment or other charge. A general statement that a facility accepts a scheme does not by itself confirm that a particular mental-health service is covered.

Is there a mental-health helpline in Pakistan?

The President of Pakistan’s message for World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2024 said the National Mental Health Helpline, 1166, had been launched. Its present-day operating status, scope, hours, eligibility, and response time are not established here; verify those details before relying on it.

The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean’s Pakistan mental-health and psychosocial-support directory lists Umang Pakistan at 0311 7786264, as well as contacts for provincial authorities, hospitals, and NGOs. The directory also gives hours for some services. Contact details and schedules can change, and a directory listing is not a guarantee that a service will answer or be available when you call. Check the WHO directory and the listed service’s own current information before use.

For immediate danger, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. The WHO directory lists ambulance contacts 1122 or 112 (from mobile phones) and police at 15 for Pakistan; confirm locally if possible, since emergency contact information can change.
