Memos is a free, open-source note-taking app built for capturing short thoughts and finding them again in a chronological timeline. It skips the setup overhead of choosing a folder or template for each note, while offering Markdown, search, tags, pins, and a browser clipper. Its main trade-off is important: you operate or rely on someone else’s Memos instance, so hosting, backups, and migration need consideration.
What Memos is—and what makes it different
The Memos project describes the app as “an open-source, self-hosted home for short-form thinking.” Its organizing idea is a stream of notes: daily reminders, links, work logs, and snippets enter a chronological Markdown timeline rather than being filed into a hierarchy of documents and folders. See the official Memos repository.
You can write a memo without first assigning it a title, folder, or template. Later, the project says, you can locate notes through the timeline, search, tags, or pins. A browser clipper can save pages, selected text, and images as Markdown linked to their original sources. That makes Memos most compelling when the goal is to capture something quickly and retrieve it by date or a few descriptive cues.

Is Memos actually free?
The software is MIT-licensed and has no license fee or required paid tier. That does not guarantee zero operating cost: a self-hosted instance needs infrastructure, which may cost money. The official features page explicitly notes the hosting cost caveat. The practical distinction is that you are not paying for a Memos software subscription, but you may pay to run the server yourself or through a hosting provider.
#1 Best Overall
- SMART, WITHOUT FEELING LIKE TECH: Uncap the smartpen and it powers on automatically. As you write, it captures every stroke and securely stores your notes until they sync to the app. The technology works quietly in the background, with weeks of writing on a single charge.
- THE FEEL OF PEN ON PAPER, REFINED: Balanced in your hand with a smooth glide across the writing surface, the smartpen is designed around the physical act of writing. Notes, sketches, diagrams, brainstorms. However you use it, every stroke feels fluid, responsive, and familiar
- FITS YOUR SYSTEM, OR BECOMES IT: Your pages land in the free Noteorius app, a calm library of everything you've written. Keep them there, or send them where your work already lives: Google Drive, OneNote, Evernote, Dropbox. Start a new note-taking ritual or plug into the one you have. Everything's included, with no subscription.
- ONE NOTEPAD, ENDLESS PAGES: A single writing surface becomes page after page. Tap the arrow when you finish one to sync it to the app, then clear the notepad when you're ready to start fresh. The notepad itself never needs charging and can be reused again and again. One notepad, as many pages as you need.
- MADE FOR REAL LIFE: Toss Noteorius in your bag with your keys, chargers, and everything else. Noteorius is made for everyday use. Scuffs and smudges on the surface won’t affect your notes—the pen captures what you write, so every page stays clean and clear in the app.
How self-hosting affects privacy and responsibility
Memos notes are private by default, and the app provides visibility settings. But a note is stored in the database for the instance you use. If you run the instance, you control its server and are responsible for protecting it and keeping backups; if someone else operates it, that operator administers the environment where the data lives. The Memos homepage describes the privacy defaults and data model.
Self-hosting therefore offers control, not automatic privacy. Choose an instance you trust, understand who can administer it, and make a backup plan before treating it as the sole home for important notes.

- Sync in Real Time — No Need to Take Photos or Upload Notes: Write naturally on paper while the free Ophaya Pro+ app (iOS/Android) instantly digitizes notes and drawings and syncs them across smartphone and iPad, ensuring no idea is lost.
- Smart Search & Convert to Text: Search handwritten notes by keywords, tags, or timestamps, and convert handwriting to editable text (Word) using integrated OCR technology.
- Multi-Format Sharing & Export: Share notes seamlessly as PDF, Word, PNG, GIF, or MP4 files — combine multiple pages before sharing for efficient collaboration.
- Audio-Linked Notes: Record audio synchronized with writing; tap notes to replay context-specific recordings for review.
- Offline Reliability & Customization: Save notes without connectivity (auto-syncs when online), and personalize your writing with adjustable pen thickness, colors, and eraser tools.
Ways to run Memos
The official features page lists several deployment choices, so a Raspberry Pi is an option rather than a requirement. It also names SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL as database choices.
- Docker: a documented deployment option for people who already run containerized services.
- Native binaries: available for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
- Kubernetes: listed for environments that use container orchestration.
- Raspberry Pi: one possible home-server setup, with no particular model or configuration specified by the project page.
These options range from a small personal server to more involved infrastructure. Select a setup you can maintain, including updates and backups, rather than choosing solely by what is technically possible. The project’s documentation provides usage and configuration guidance.

Check export and migration before moving your notes
Memos supports exporting notes and attached files as a ZIP. The project’s features page marks importing an export ZIP as work in progress and says imports from other note-taking apps are not supported. That makes migration a meaningful constraint: an export gives you a copy, but it does not establish a ready-made route for rebuilding another app’s organization inside Memos or restoring that archive later.
If you are considering a switch, test what the export contains and whether the resulting files are usable for your needs before moving an entire archive. Keep a separate copy of important notes until you are satisfied with the new workflow.

Who should choose Memos?
Memos is a reasonable fit if you mostly want a low-friction place for short notes, links, and snippets, and you value a searchable timeline more than a deep folder or document system. It may also suit someone who wants to administer their own note service and is prepared to look after the instance.
Consider another workflow if you need richly structured documents, extensive collaboration or sharing features, a managed service with no server responsibilities, or dependable import from an existing notes app. The project’s own FAQ frames Memos as an option for people who want quick notes they can later find by search, tag, or date—not as a universal replacement for every note-taking system. See the official FAQ.

Version context
The official documentation says its usage and configuration guides cover version 0.31.0. That is documentation coverage, not a claim that every current installation runs that version.
