Real-life Pokémon Professors are trained volunteers who help official Pokémon events run: they judge matches, answer rules questions, organize tournaments and leagues, and support competitors. They are not the professors who give players their first Pokémon in the games, nor are they simply high-level competitors. Their work combines rules knowledge, event logistics, accuracy and care for the people in the venue.
What real-life Pokémon Professors do
The official Play! Pokémon FAQ describes a range of responsibilities. Professors often serve as judges and answer competitors’ questions; some also work as Tournament Organizers or League Assistants, or help with event organization, execution and marketing. The precise duties depend on a Professor’s role and the game being played.
Judging and rules support
Judges interpret rules and help resolve issues during play. At a large event, that can mean more than deciding what happened in one match: head judges may need to understand the full situation before making a ruling. Gemma Byard, a head judge interviewed by The Guardian at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, explained: “What they don’t understand is that they’re seeing a picture, but we’re getting the entire story, and we’re making the decisions based upon that story,”

Tournament and league work can include coordinating participants, communicating instructions and helping the event proceed smoothly. The mix differs by game: The Guardian reported that Pokémon Unite staff may handle player coordination and technical support, while Trading Card Game judges may give hands-on guidance to new competitors.

Accuracy and venue safety
Event work also involves careful administration and attention to the people on site. Byard described checking that match slips show the correct results and are signed by the players. She also said staff watch for safety concerns in the venue and consider who should be there, alongside their rulings work. These responsibilities help protect both the integrity of results and the event environment.
Why the role is more than making rulings
Competitors need clear directions and useful answers, particularly when they are new or unsure what to do next. Pokémon Professor Evelyne de Groot told The Guardian that organizing poorly or giving unclear instructions can lead to failures, and that staff need enough knowledge of the game to help participants. In practice, a Professor’s expertise matters most when it makes the event understandable and fair for the people taking part.

That support is not identical across every event. A local league assistant, a TCG judge and a head judge at a major championship can have different responsibilities and levels of decision-making authority. The official FAQ’s broad role descriptions should not be read as a single fixed job description.

The official FAQ’s “How do I become a Professor?” guidance says applicants must be adults, apply through the Professor application, and undergo a background check. The program says those checks support a safe environment, especially for younger fans. Its FAQ also asks, “Why do I have to wait until I am 18 years old before I can be a Professor?” and explains the age boundary in connection with those safety responsibilities.

Are Pokémon Professors paid?
The Guardian describes Professors as volunteers, but its reporting does not establish a universal compensation policy. Most of the people interviewed declined to discuss details, and The Pokémon Company International did not provide an official explanation. One unnamed Professor told the newspaper that European staff received merchandise, that wages were reported at U.S. regional tournaments, and that travel and lodging were supported for Worlds. That is one person’s account, not a guarantee or program-wide rule; arrangements may vary by event and location.

How official Professors differ from other Pokémon educators
The title can be confusing because competitive Pokémon has several kinds of teachers. In the games, professors are characters who introduce players to the Pokémon world. In the competitive community, experienced players may mentor others or write strategy guides. Those activities are separate from official Play! Pokémon event staffing.

For example, Smogon describes a community built around competitive articles, tournaments, forum advice and volunteer tutoring on a simulator. That can help players learn strategy, but it is not the same role as judging or organizing an official Play! Pokémon event.

What the 2026 competition changes mean
Competition formats and platforms evolve. In a March 24, 2026 announcement, Pokémon said the Video Game Championships (VGC) would transition to Pokémon Champions as its standard platform after the game’s April 8, 2026 Nintendo Switch launch; Indianapolis Regionals was identified as the first live official Championship Series event slated to use it exclusively. Pokémon’s June 10, 2026 VGC retrospective places that shift in the context of a changing competition history. These are dated details, not a promise about every later season: check the current season’s official rules and event information for its platform and format.
At the 2026 World Championships in San Francisco, The Guardian reported that roughly 300 Professors were present, attributing the estimate to a Pokémon Company International representative. It is an approximate reported headcount for that event, not a general participation total. The figure gives a sense of how much event staffing a major championship can involve, while the work itself remains varied—from technical support and coordination to judging and player guidance.
