A 12-hour stream is not automatically stopped by a universal YouTube rule. YouTube’s 12-hour guidance concerns whether a live stream is automatically archived and whether viewers can rewind it—not a documented cutoff that ends every broadcast. If your MediaMTX-forwarded stream actually disconnects, check the event’s status and error in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare them with MediaMTX logs before setting up a restart.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance means
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. These are archive and viewer-rewind caveats, not evidence that every stream is terminated at the 12-hour mark. See YouTube Help on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.
If the broadcast ended, use the actual event status, stream-health message, and server logs to find the cause. The exact cause cannot be determined without the channel’s event setup, MediaMTX version and configuration, logs, and hosting and network details.
Diagnose the disconnection before automating a restart
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. See whether the event is still live, ended, or reporting a stream-health error. Record the displayed error and the time it occurred. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the Live Control Room workflow; its stream metrics guidance describes status and post-stream data.
- Inspect MediaMTX at the same time. Review its logs and active configuration around the failure. Confirm that the intended path is being forwarded and that the RTMPS destination and stream key match the current values in your YouTube Studio account. MediaMTX documents the YouTube forwarding workflow; use YouTube Studio for your own current server URL and key rather than assuming an example destination stays current.
- Check for both audio and video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Confirm that the forwarded stream contains both tracks.
- Protect the stream key. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs shared publicly, or public configuration examples. Treat it as a credential and replace it through your YouTube account if it has been exposed.
- Preserve a local recording if the complete broadcast matters. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy.
After the broadcast, check YouTube Studio’s Live tab and the event’s available analytics. Crossing or restarting around 12 hours does not guarantee a particular archive or monetization outcome.

Choose the restart behavior you actually need

What MediaMTX hooks can—and cannot—do
MediaMTX is a self-hosted live media server and proxy. It can publish, read, forward, record, and play back streams, convert between protocols, expose a control API and metrics, and run external command hooks. It supports RTMP publishing and documents workflows with FFmpeg and OBS Studio. Its YouTube workflow forwards to an RTMPS destination using a stream key.
MediaMTX path hooks can run commands on stream lifecycle events, such as availability or online/offline state. Some hooks support restart settings when the command exits. These capabilities provide building blocks for a workflow, not a universal YouTube session-rotation recipe. A hook restarting a command does not by itself establish that YouTube has started a new event, that the same scheduled event remains usable, or that reconnection preserves the intended event setup. Consult the current MediaMTX configuration reference and hook documentation, then design and verify the behavior for your event and deployment.

Do not add a timer that blindly restarts every 12 hours on the assumption YouTube requires it. First confirm an actual failure and identify what action—if any—your particular event workflow needs.
For Indian creators: the same diagnosis applies
The cited YouTube and MediaMTX guidance describes general platform behavior, not a separate 12-hour rule for Indian channels. The relevant checks remain the event’s Live Control Room status, MediaMTX’s logs and configuration, current YouTube destination and key, and whether the forwarded stream has both audio and video. Hosting location, network conditions, and account-specific event setup can affect an individual incident, but the available guidance does not establish a special India-specific restart procedure.
