If your only goal is to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live repeatedly, you may not need MediaMTX: FFmpeg can loop a file, while hosted services and dedicated hardware offer other ways to automate playback. MediaMTX is a media server and proxy/router, so it remains useful when you need protocol conversion, forwarding, or multiple stream paths. The right alternative depends on whether you want a command-line encoder, a visual production interface, a cloud service, or an appliance.
What MediaMTX does—and when a replacement makes sense
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use media server and proxy/router. It can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time streams, convert between protocols, and serve always-available streams. If all you need is a repeated local file, you can use an encoder workflow without a separate media server. If MediaMTX is handling protocol conversion, forwarding, or multiple destinations, replacing it may remove functionality you still need; you may only need to change how the source is published or automated. How to loop a video with FFmpeg
MediaMTX documents an indefinite file loop using FFmpeg’s real-time input option and stream-loop setting. Its example sends the file to a MediaMTX server running locally, rather than directly to YouTube:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream

Keep the process running and recover deliberately
The loop flag repeats the input, but it does not by itself supervise FFmpeg after a crash, machine restart, network loss, or encoder error. For unattended operation, run it on a machine that will remain powered and connected, use an appropriate process supervisor or scheduled restart mechanism, and monitor the YouTube stream in Studio. Using OBS, Gyre, Restream, or an encoder appliance
OBS Studio: visual controls and production
OBS is a better fit when the stream needs scenes, overlays, or hands-on production controls. MediaMTX documents publishing from OBS to MediaMTX, and YouTube lists encoder software as a way to stream. Gyre: hosted prerecorded streaming
YouTube’s encoder documentation names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. That makes it relevant when you want playback hosted away from your own computer. AJA HELO Plus: dedicated hardware
YouTube describes AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and notes that optional PlayToStream can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. - Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain the current server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder or forwarding configuration; treat the key as a password and do not publish it. YouTube encoder setup
- For MediaMTX forwarding, include audio and video. Its YouTube forwarding guidance warns that YouTube requires both tracks and says video-only streams are silently rejected. Re-check the documented ingest endpoint when configuring forwarding, since the endpoint example may change. MediaMTX forwarding
- Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends outbound bandwidth equal to the primary plus backup stream bitrate, with an additional 20% allowance. Account for the actual output bitrate and other traffic on the connection. YouTube streaming tips
- Test the whole path. Confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video, check playback from another device, and test your recovery or failover plan before leaving the stream unattended. If a local archive matters, verify that the recording is intact rather than assuming the live replay will be available.
Plan for YouTube’s long-stream archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Copyright and reused content still apply
Looping a video does not grant permission to use its music, footage, or other protected material. Use content you own or have the required rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before building a channel around repeated prerecorded material. Avoid assuming that continuous playback alone makes a channel eligible for monetization.
