Choose a full-size keyboard if you want a dedicated number pad and direct access to the usual key groups. Choose a 75% board if you want dedicated arrow and function keys without the number pad. A 65% board keeps the arrows in a smaller layout, but typically moves function-row commands to a layer. These labels describe common form factors, not exact dimensions or guaranteed key counts, so check the specific keyboard’s layout before buying.

What the 65%, 75%, and full-size labels mean

The percentages refer to broad keyboard form factors: how much of the familiar full-size arrangement a board retains and how its keys are grouped. They are not typing layouts such as QWERTY, AZERTY, or Dvorak, and they do not identify regional physical arrangements such as ANSI or ISO.

In general, full-size retains the number pad, function row, arrow keys, and navigation cluster. A 75% layout removes the number pad but typically keeps a compact function row and dedicated arrows. A 65% layout usually removes both the number pad and dedicated function row while retaining arrows and some navigation keys.

There is no strict, universal key-count standard for these labels. RTINGS gives 104–108 keys as typical for full-size and notes that layouts vary; Keychron’s illustrative counts are 104 for full-size, 84 for 75%, and 68 for 65%. Those are category examples, not requirements for every model. RTINGS’ keyboard size guide and Keychron’s size guide explain the variation.

How the three layouts compare

Layout Keys typically retained Main advantage Main trade-off
65% Alphanumeric keys, dedicated arrows, and a limited navigation group; usually no dedicated function row or number pad Compact footprint while keeping arrow keys directly available Function-row commands and some other keys usually require a function layer; right-side keys vary by model
75% Alphanumeric keys, compact function row, arrows, and some navigation keys; no number pad Direct function-row and arrow access in a compact arrangement Tighter spacing and model-dependent navigation keys
Full-size Alphanumeric keys, function row, navigation cluster, arrows, and number pad Direct access to the usual key groups, including numeric entry Larger footprint and less desk space available for mouse movement

The layout descriptions are general, not guarantees attached to every keyboard marketed with a percentage label. Corsair and RTINGS both note variation in compact layouts. Corsair’s keyboard-size guide also describes the typical key groups.

Which layout should you choose?

Choose full-size for frequent number entry

A dedicated number pad is the clearest reason to choose full-size. It also suits people who use the function row and navigation cluster directly or prefer the familiar spacing between key groups. The cost of keeping those groups is a larger board footprint.

Choose 75% to keep the function row and arrows

A 75% board is a middle ground if you regularly use F-keys and arrows but do not need a permanently attached number pad. The function row remains directly accessible, although it is compressed into a tighter arrangement and the navigation keys can differ by model.

Choose 65% if compactness matters more than direct F-key access

A 65% board preserves dedicated arrows in a smaller arrangement, but commonly omits the function row and number pad. You will need to use a function layer or key combination for commands assigned to missing keys. It is a better fit if that extra step works with your habits and you do not rely on a dedicated number pad.

Keychron summarizes the trade-off this way: “The smaller you go, the more desk space you save, but keep in mind what keys you actually need for your workflow.” Keychron’s 65% and 75% guide discusses the common key groups.

What to check on an individual keyboard

Before deciding, inspect the manufacturer’s layout image and the configuration for your region. In particular, check which navigation or control keys appear to the right of the main typing block. On 65% boards, this group is limited and can vary; on 75% boards, some navigation keys may be rearranged or omitted. Also confirm that a compact board’s function-layer shortcuts cover the commands you actually use.
