A MEAN app uses Angular in the browser, an Express API running on Node.js for server-side logic, and MongoDB for data storage. To build one, scaffold the Angular client with Angular CLI, create an Express server that reads MongoDB credentials from protected server-side configuration, then connect the client to API routes with HTTP requests.
How a MEAN app fits together
MEAN stands for MongoDB, Express, Angular, and Node.js. MongoDB is the database layer; Express and Node.js form the application and server layer; Angular provides the presentation layer. In a browser-facing app, the normal request path is:
Angular in the browser → Express API on Node.js → MongoDB
Angular should request data from your API rather than connect directly to MongoDB. The Express server handles database access and keeps the MongoDB connection URI out of code delivered to users.

Prepare your development environment
You need Node.js and npm, Angular CLI, a terminal or shell, and a code editor. Angular’s first-app tutorial recommends Visual Studio Code and optionally the Angular Language Service; these are helpful choices, not prerequisites. Check Angular’s current compatibility information before installing Node.js or choosing package versions, since supported versions can change.
For the database, MongoDB’s Angular integration guide demonstrates MongoDB Atlas, a managed cloud database, and describes a free cluster option. That does not mean every Atlas usage level or related service is free. Follow the guide’s current setup instructions and store the connection string securely: MongoDB: Integrate MongoDB with Angular.
Create the Angular workspace with Angular CLI
Angular CLI scaffolds and supports the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of Angular applications. Install it using the command shown in Angular’s current CLI documentation, then create a workspace and start its development server:

In a terminal, run

Start the Angular development server with

These are standard CLI workflow commands; consult the current Angular CLI overview and first-app tutorial for the version-specific prompts and instructions.
Build the Express API and connect MongoDB
Keep the server in its own directory or package so its dependencies, configuration, and startup process are separate from the browser client. The MongoDB tutorial demonstrates an Express server configured with JSON middleware, CORS middleware, and mounted routes. Adapt that structure to the endpoints your Angular app needs; for a restaurant example, those might retrieve a restaurant list or create and update a record.
Keep database credentials on the server
Put the Atlas connection URI in a server-side .env file as MONGODB_URI, following MongoDB’s guide. Ensure that file is excluded from version control and never place the URI in Angular source, a browser environment file, or any other asset shipped to the browser. The server should read the variable and use it to connect to MongoDB.

Expose API routes for the client
Define Express routes around the operations the UI needs. Angular sends requests to those routes; Express validates and processes each request, accesses MongoDB, and returns an appropriate response, commonly JSON. Configure CORS on the server for the Angular development origin when the client and API use different origins. In production, configure the intended client origin rather than leaving access broader than necessary.

Build a page around a concrete task, such as displaying restaurant records and submitting a form to add one. In Angular, use its HTTP facilities to call the Express endpoints, represent the returned data in the UI, and handle loading and error states. The browser only needs the API address and request data; it should never receive the database URI or connect to MongoDB itself.
During development, Angular’s server and Express may run on different local ports. Make the API base address and server CORS configuration agree with the actual development setup. For deployment, point the client at the deployed API address or arrange routing so requests reach the API under the intended origin.

Run and build the application
Use ng serve while developing the Angular client. When you need deployable client files, run ng build from the Angular workspace. Angular documents that this compiles TypeScript to JavaScript and optimizes, bundles, and minifies output as appropriate; the configured application builder controls the build behavior and output. The Angular build produces the client application, not the Express server or MongoDB database. Deploy and configure those separately, and ensure the built client can reach the API in its target environment.
Troubleshoot common setup problems

CLI or package errors: Check that your installed Node.js version is compatible with the Angular version in the workspace. Use Angular’s current compatibility information rather than assuming a version from an older tutorial still applies.

Browser requests fail: Confirm the Angular client is calling the right API origin and port, and that Express CORS settings permit that origin.

MongoDB connection fails: Verify that the server process can read
MONGODB_URI, that the URI is valid, and that the Atlas configuration permits the server’s connection. -
Production build fails: Read the CLI output for TypeScript, dependency, or builder-configuration errors, resolve those before deployment, and rerun
