For Visual Studio with GitHub Copilot, add a server through Visual Studio’s MCP settings or .mcp.json. For Windows’ on-device agent connector registry, follow the separate Windows registration path. To give an MCP client limited access to project files, the official filesystem server is a practical starting point: configure only the directories it needs and review which tools can change files.
What an MCP server does—and what it does not do
An MCP server exposes tools or data to a compatible AI client. The server is not a Windows-wide switch that automatically makes every client or application able to use it: the client must support the server and the integration route you choose. Visual Studio’s GitHub Copilot integration and Windows’ on-device registry are distinct setup surfaces with different deployment and security characteristics. Microsoft’s Windows MCP documentation and Visual Studio MCP documentation describe those routes.
Before installing anything, decide what the AI should be able to do. A path-limited filesystem server may be appropriate for a repository task; a server that controls the desktop, shell, registry, or processes has a much broader impact. MCP compatibility alone does not establish that a server is safe.
Choose the Windows integration route
Visual Studio and GitHub Copilot
Microsoft’s Visual Studio documentation, checked on September 30, 2026, lists Visual Studio 2026 or Visual Studio 2022 version 17.14 as prerequisites, and recommends the latest servicing release for current MCP features. The documented options include installing from the web, adding a custom server using the agent tool picker, configuring a project or user server in .mcp.json, and connecting to a remote server URL. The exact server must still work with the client, transport, and version you have; the documented version floor is not a guarantee that every server works in every servicing release.

For example, Visual Studio’s documentation includes a GitHub MCP endpoint with account authentication and describes user approval for tool calls. Treat authentication and approval as parts of the integration—not as a substitute for evaluating what the server can access or change.
Windows on-device registry
Windows documentation describes several registration paths: registration for apps with package identity, direct installation of MCP bundles for apps without identity, and manual registration for local or remote servers. These paths are not equivalent from a containment perspective. The documentation says directly installed bundles cannot run in the securely contained agent process and are not available through the registry unless users explicitly reduce connector protections. Servers accessed through the on-device registry are described as running in a separate contained agent session with access restricted to approved resources.
Microsoft’s May 2025 announcement described an initial private developer preview plan. A November 2025 announcement later called native MCP support a public preview and discussed registry-discovered connectors, a proxy for authentication, authorization, and audit, and built-in File Explorer and System Settings connectors. Those announcements document preview milestones, not definitive current availability or OS requirements. Check the live Windows documentation for the release and deployment status that applies to your machine.
Pick a server by access, runtime, and maintenance
| Option | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Official filesystem server | Giving an AI client access to selected local directories | Allowed paths, read-only versus write-capable tools, and destructive operations |
| Official Git server example | Repository-level context or operations | Current package maintenance, exposed tools, and repository permissions |
| Community Windows desktop automation server | Experiments that require UI, keyboard, mouse, application, or system automation | Its broad access, sandboxing, source, policy, and risks before granting sensitive permissions |
| Remote server | A service reached through a client-supported remote endpoint | Authentication, authorization, transport support, and what resources the service exposes |
Filesystem access: prefer a narrow boundary
The official MCP filesystem server describes its access as local and constrained to explicitly allowed directories. Its tools differ: some read, while others can write or otherwise modify files. The README identifies operations such as overwriting or moving a file as destructive. Allow only the project directories needed for the task, and distinguish inspection from operations that can alter or remove data.

Repository work: consider a Git-specific server
The official server catalogue includes a Git server example launched with uvx mcp-server-git and a repository path argument. That can be a better fit when the task is repository-oriented rather than broad access to arbitrary files. Verify the package’s current maintenance, tool list, and permissions before using it; catalogue examples can change.

Desktop automation: understand the larger blast radius
The community project windows-mcp-server advertises Windows UI automation, synthetic mouse and keyboard input, screenshots, window and application control, PowerShell, registry, process, filesystem, and web-scraping tools. Its own documentation says several tools have full system access without sandboxing. This is a project’s capability claim, not an endorsement or a guarantee about its security. Review its source and policy, and test it in a controlled environment before allowing access to sensitive systems.
Configure a local filesystem server in a Windows client
For an npx-launched server on Windows, the official filesystem README shows the Windows wrapper pattern: invoke cmd with /c, then npx -y, the package name, and the allowed paths. A representative JSON configuration is:
{
"servers": {
"filesystem": {
"command": "cmd",
"args": [
"/c",
"npx",
"-y",
"@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem",
"C:/Users/YourName/source/MyProject"
]
}
}
}
This illustrates the invocation pattern; use the configuration schema required by your client and substitute a real directory on your computer. Do not grant a broader parent directory merely to avoid typing the project path. The MCP repository’s filesystem instructions provide the server-specific configuration details.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPython-based examples using uvx do not use the npx wrapper. The official catalogue says to leave uvx entries unchanged when applying the Windows npx pattern. Its Git example uses uvx mcp-server-git with a repository path argument. For other runtimes, use the command and argument format documented by the server and supported by your client.
Review permissions before enabling tools
- Verify the publisher and source. Establish who maintains the server and whether the repository is active, archived, or community-run. The official MCP catalogue marks some older reference servers as archived and points to successors for some entries; status is not static.
- Limit resources. For file access, grant only the required directories. For remote services, identify the account, endpoint, and resources available to the server.
- Separate read from write. Check which tools inspect data and which can overwrite, move, delete, or otherwise change it.
- Understand approvals and policies. Know what the client’s approval prompts cover, and review the client’s policy controls. An approval workflow does not make a powerful tool harmless.
- Check authentication and deployment. For remote endpoints, understand how credentials are provided and which parties can access them. For Windows registry connectors, distinguish contained registry-mediated execution from directly installed bundles.
- Use least privilege and test safely. Begin with the smallest scope and a non-sensitive project. Microsoft describes least privilege, isolation, declarative capabilities, and user control as design goals or controls, but each connector and deployment still needs evaluation.
Microsoft’s Windows Developer Blog stated on May 19, 2025, in the context of its initial private developer preview announcement: “Agents’ access to MCP servers is turned off by default.” Later preview milestones are described in the November 2025 announcement. Check current Windows documentation rather than treating either dated announcement as a statement of present release status.

Troubleshoot a server that will not connect
The client cannot launch an npx server
On Windows, check whether the client needs the cmd /c npx ... invocation. The official filesystem README and GitHub’s MCP debugging guide show this wrapper pattern. Do not apply it to uvx examples.
The process starts but the client reports an error
First confirm the server starts independently with the same command and arguments. Then inspect the client’s logs and restart the client if its configuration has changed. The MCP local-server setup guide documents Windows Claude Desktop logs under %APPDATA%Claudelogs; log locations differ between clients.

Check quoting, escaping, and the working directory. Use the actual Windows path and the client’s expected JSON schema. GitHub’s debugging guide advises checking path quoting and working directories for local processes. Avoid expanding allowed paths as a troubleshooting shortcut: verify that the configured directory is the one intended.
A .NET server does not launch
GitHub’s Windows debugging examples describe configuring the executable’s full path or launching with dotnet and a DLL path. Confirm that the configured executable or DLL exists and that the arguments match the server’s startup instructions.
Security software blocks the process
GitHub’s debugging guide notes that Windows security software may block new executables or processes communicating over stdin/stdout. Follow your organization’s security policy and investigate the specific process and communication involved; do not add broad exclusions without review.

Plan for maintenance, reliability, and cost
MCP itself does not establish a server’s uptime, response speed, or maintenance quality. Those depend on the selected project, its runtime, dependencies, client, and (for remote services) network and service. The official reference repository’s catalogue can change, and archived entries may have successors. Before adopting a server, check its current repository instructions and package state, then retest after client or server updates.

For local servers, account for runtime installation, first-run package downloads, path configuration, and client restarts when diagnosing startup issues. For remote servers, include authentication, network access, and service-side availability in your operational checks. Or skip the browser setup
If your MCP workflow needs website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo offers an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and any MCP client. It can also return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup details. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000, and every feature is on every plan.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same MCP server in Visual Studio and the Windows registry?
Not automatically. Each route has its own registration, client compatibility, and deployment requirements. Check the documentation for the specific client and Windows integration you intend to use.
Does the official filesystem server only read files?
No. Its tools include both read-only and write-capable operations. Review its current tool list and configured directories before enabling it.
Do all MCP servers require Node.js?
No. The examples include npx/Node-based servers and Python servers launched with uvx or pip; other server types and remote endpoints may use different runtimes or transports.
