Configure a proxy at the layer that owns the network connection. If the coding agent itself makes the outbound request, set the proxy in the agent’s supported runtime or host environment. If an individual MCP server needs its own proxy setting, put it in that server’s configuration when the host supports passing it through. The two settings are not automatically interchangeable.
Start by identifying which process makes the connection
A coding agent and an MCP server can be separate processes. The agent may use the network to reach its service, while an MCP server may make separate connections for its own work. Each outbound connection needs to be configured where the process that makes it can read the setting.
- Agent traffic: Configure the agent process or the supported shell, service manager, or host environment that launches it.
- One MCP server’s traffic: Configure that server’s launch environment or its host-supported server entry.
- Organization-wide policy: Use an approved machine, container, or remote-host configuration where appropriate, then verify the specific agent and server behavior.
Do not assume an agent-level proxy setting reaches every MCP server, or that a server’s proxy setting routes the agent’s own API traffic.
Where to put the setting
| What needs the proxy | Configuration owner | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The coding agent’s own API or client traffic | The agent process or a supported shell, service manager, or host-level configuration | The agent client initiates those requests. For example, Anthropic documents HTTP and HTTPS proxy environment variables for Claude Code. |
| A specific MCP server process | The MCP server entry or plugin configuration, if the host passes the relevant environment values to that process | The setting belongs to the process that needs it. VS Code documents MCP server entries with commands, arguments, and optional environment values. |
| Multiple development tools in a managed environment | An organization-approved machine, container, or remote-host layer | A shared environment can apply policy across processes it manages, but product support and inheritance still need to be checked. |
Claude Code: proxy settings for the agent
Anthropic’s Claude Code corporate proxy documentation says Claude Code supports standard HTTP and HTTPS proxy configuration through environment variables, including HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY. These details describe Claude Code, not every coding agent or MCP host.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Important Claude Code limitations
- Anthropic says Claude Code does not currently support
NO_PROXY, so traffic is routed through the configured proxy rather than bypassing it for listed hosts. - Anthropic says Claude Code does not support SOCKS proxies.
- For a proxy requiring basic authentication, the documented pattern places credentials in the proxy URL. Anthropic cautions against hardcoding passwords in scripts; use secure credential storage instead.
- For custom proxy certificates, Anthropic documents
SSL_CERT_FILEandNODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS.
Check Anthropic’s current guide for required service domains and operational details before configuring a corporate allowlist; proxy requirements can change.
VS Code: configure an MCP server in the host
VS Code’s agent-plugin documentation places MCP server definitions in mcp.json at the plugin root. A server entry can define its command, arguments, and optional environment variables. This is the appropriate boundary for values the server process needs, provided the host supports passing them to it.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For project-level MCP configuration, VS Code’s MCP configuration reference describes .vscode/mcp.json and inputs for sensitive values. Prefer supported inputs or another approved secret mechanism over committing credentials in plugin or repository files.
Remote windows and containers
In a VS Code remote window, configuration paths and environment variables resolve in the remote environment. If that environment launches the MCP server, check the remote host or container’s proxy and certificate settings—not only the local desktop’s environment.

Set it up safely and verify the actual route
- Identify the requester. Determine whether the agent client, an MCP server, or both initiate the connection that must use the proxy.
- Choose that process’s configuration boundary. Use the agent’s supported environment for agent traffic; use the server entry or server runtime for server-specific settings.
- Keep credentials out of committed files. Use the host’s supported input or secret mechanism, or your organization’s approved secure credential store.
- Check certificate trust. If the proxy intercepts TLS, confirm that the process making the connection trusts the organization’s certificate bundle.
- Test in the deployment environment. Verify the exact agent version, host, remote or container setup, and MCP server. Confirm whether the environment variables reach the relevant process and whether the client supports the required proxy scheme and bypass behavior.
What is not universal
There is no basis here to assume that every coding agent reads the same proxy variables, that every plugin host passes environment values to an MCP server, or that MCP defines one universal proxy field. The documented examples establish product-specific behavior: Anthropic documents proxy behavior for Claude Code, while Microsoft documents MCP configuration boundaries and remote-environment resolution in VS Code. Check the current documentation for the exact host, agent, server, and deployment before rollout.
