For an MCP server, use structured application logs for operational events and OpenTelemetry spans for request timing, parentage, and errors. This practical walkthrough uses the MCP Python SDK; its documented server behavior is not a default you can assume for every language SDK. It covers stdio logging, exporting spans, trace context, and log correlation, with protocol details qualified for the 2026-07-28 MCP Specification Release Candidate.
How do logging and tracing differ on an MCP server?
Logs record events your application chooses to report, such as startup, a dependency failure, or an authorization decision. Spans describe work over time: they provide boundaries, duration, parent-child relationships, and error status. They answer different questions, so useful observability generally needs both.
The MCP Python SDK documentation puts the distinction plainly: “If what you actually want is tracing (every request, how long it took, whether it failed), you don’t want log lines, you want spans.” MCP Python SDK Logging documentation.
Which transport and SDK does this setup cover?
The built-in behavior described here is from the MCP Python SDK. Its logging guidance covers stdio servers, where standard output is reserved for MCP protocol messages. For stdio, send diagnostic logs to standard error and avoid print() for operational output: even buffered stray output can reach the protocol stream when the process exits. HTTP deployments do not have this same stdout protocol constraint, but still need an exporter and network configuration appropriate to their environment. Other SDKs may have different logging and tracing defaults.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pin the SDK and protocol versions used by your project. The MCP project’s 2026-07-28 Specification Release Candidate announcement describes breaking changes and documents trace-context keys in _meta; do not assume older clients, gateways, or SDKs implement the same behavior.
How do I add useful application logs?
Use the language’s standard logging facilities for concise operational events: server startup and shutdown, dependency failures, relevant authorization decisions, and handler outcomes. Give records a consistent severity and enough context to diagnose behavior, but do not log full tool arguments or results by default; they can contain credentials, personal information, or other sensitive content.

For the MCP Python SDK, the server’s log_level can change its logging threshold: MCPServer(..., log_level="DEBUG") selects DEBUG rather than the default INFO threshold. The SDK documentation says logging configuration made before server creation is preserved. Configure a stderr handler when using stdio, and check the exact API against the SDK version you have pinned. See the Python SDK Logging guide.
How do I export MCP request spans?
The MCP Python SDK’s OpenTelemetry guide says the server creates a SERVER span for each inbound message. For a tools/call request, the documented GenAI semantic attributes include gen_ai.operation.name="execute_tool" and the called tool’s name. This gives you a request-level starting point; downstream calls need their own instrumentation to appear as child spans.

Creating spans and exporting them are separate concerns. The guide explains that the API-only dependency can produce no-op spans when no OpenTelemetry SDK and exporter are installed. To make spans visible outside the process, add the OpenTelemetry SDK and an exporter; the guide names opentelemetry-sdk and opentelemetry-exporter-otlp as packages used for that purpose. Confirm installation and API details against your project’s pinned versions. Follow the MCP Python SDK OpenTelemetry guide.
OpenTelemetry Collector is another documented way to receive, process, and forward telemetry. Avoid copying the Python guide’s underscored middleware import to disable tracing without checking its version status: the guide identifies that middleware as provisional.

How do I trace an MCP tool call end to end?
A connected trace depends on context propagation, not just on the server exporting spans. In the Python SDK behavior described by its guide, the client injects W3C trace context and the server extracts it, allowing the server span to nest under the client span when both sides use compatible SDK behavior.
The 2026-07-28 MCP Specification Release Candidate announcement documents traceparent, tracestate, and baggage keys in _meta for correlation across SDKs and gateways. That version boundary matters: propagation is not guaranteed for every older client or intermediary. Downstream services must also extract and forward trace context for their spans to join the same trace. See the Python SDK OpenTelemetry guide, the OpenTelemetry context-propagation documentation, and the MCP release-candidate announcement.

How do I correlate MCP logs with traces?
OpenTelemetry identifies three useful dimensions for log correlation: execution time, trace context (TraceId and SpanId), and resource context. Configure your logging integration or instrumentation to attach active trace identifiers to log records, and give logs and spans a consistent resource identity—for example, the same service name and deployment environment. That lets operators filter signals for the same server and navigate between a trace and related records.
You can export logs directly over OTLP when the destination accepts that protocol, avoiding file parsing and tailing. Alternatively, retain local log files for inspection and use a Collector or agent to process and forward them. These are operational trade-offs, not a vendor ranking. OpenTelemetry describes the options in its Logging documentation.
What should I redact from telemetry?
Treat trace context and telemetry as potentially sensitive. OpenTelemetry warns: “Malicious actors could send forged trace headers to manipulate your tracing data or potentially exploit vulnerabilities in context parsing.” Validate, sanitize, or ignore untrusted incoming context where appropriate; do not treat trace identifiers as proof of identity or authorization.
Baggage may be propagated between services and can be logged. Keep credentials, API keys, personal data, and other secrets out of baggage and telemetry. Apply payload capture only when there is a justified need and appropriate safeguards, and review access and retention for exported data. See OpenTelemetry’s Context propagation security guidance.
What should I check before shipping?
- Invoke a tool. Confirm a server span appears in your configured backend for the request.
- Check identity and timing. Verify the span identifies the MCP method and tool where documented, and inspect its duration and error status.
- Follow the trace. Confirm the server span has the expected client parent when propagation is configured, and that instrumented downstream calls appear as related spans.
- Open a related log record. Check that the record carries trace identifiers or can otherwise be navigated from the trace, and that service and environment resource attributes are consistent.
- Review data exposure. Inspect exported logs, span attributes, and baggage for credentials, personal data, and unintended tool payloads.
- Test the transport boundary. For stdio, verify that stdout contains protocol traffic only and diagnostic messages go to stderr.
Google Cloud publishes one hosted implementation walkthrough using FastMCP and Cloud Run, including authentication, testing, and viewing telemetry. It is one deployment path rather than a universal setup: Instrument a self-hosted MCP server with OpenTelemetry.
