Choose an MCP server by the browser job you need. Use Playwright MCP when an AI client must navigate pages, fill forms, click controls, inspect requests, or generate tests across browser engines. Use Chrome DevTools for agents when the priority is examining, debugging, and profiling a live page in Chrome. They solve different problems, so the right choice depends on browser coverage, testing and debugging tools, session persistence, and how much access you are willing to grant an agent.
What an MCP server does for browser work
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client call tools exposed by a server. In browser workflows, those tools can open pages, identify controls, perform actions, read diagnostics, and return results to the model. The server is the boundary between the agent and the browser, so its capabilities and permissions matter as much as its convenience.
Playwright describes its server as browser automation through structured accessibility snapshots: the client receives roles, names, text, and references for elements instead of relying only on screenshots. That representation lets an agent locate a button or form field and act on a specific reference. See the Playwright MCP documentation.
Example 1: Playwright MCP for general automation
Install and connect a client
The getting-started configuration launches the package with npx:

What the agent can do
- Navigate to URLs and inspect the rendered page.
- Find controls through accessibility roles, names, and text, then click or activate them.
- Fill forms, press keys, move or click the mouse, and take screenshots.
- Handle dialogs and switch between tabs or pages.
- Inspect network requests and mock routes.
- Save, restore, or otherwise work with browser storage state.
A typical request might be: “Open the staging checkout, identify the email field by its accessible label, enter a test address, submit the form, and report validation errors.” The model can use the snapshot references rather than guessing coordinates.
Browser and session choices
Playwright’s configuration documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge selection, plus headed and headless operation: configuration options. Persistent profiles are described as the default, which is useful when a workflow needs an existing login. An isolated session starts clean and reduces carryover from previous runs. Choose persistence only when the account and stored data are intentionally available to the agent.
Expose only needed capabilities
Capability groups let you limit the tool surface. The documented groups include network, storage, testing, and developer tools: Playwright capabilities. For a form-filling assistant, start with core interaction tools. Add network tools for request inspection or mocking, storage for state management, testing for assertions and locator generation, and developer tools for tracing or related diagnostics. Smaller surfaces are easier to review and safer to delegate.

Can an agent generate Playwright tests from a live page?
Yes, when the testing capability is enabled. Ask the agent to exercise a scenario, identify the accessible controls it used, and produce a scoped Playwright test with assertions. Review the generated locators and expected results before committing them: an agent can observe the current UI, but it cannot know which behavior your product considers contractual without your acceptance criteria.
Microsoft’s Power Platform example demonstrates this workflow against a live application. The agent inspects the rendered DOM, locates app-specific controls and accessible labels, accounts for iframe boundaries, and generates Playwright tests from the observed behavior. The described setup calls for Node.js 18 or later and a Chromium-compatible browser; verify those prerequisites against the current Power Platform guidance.
Example 2: Chrome DevTools for agents for live debugging
Chrome DevTools for agents is aimed at coding workflows that need live-browser inspection, debugging, and performance analysis. Its setup documentation covers MCP client configuration and additional browser options: Get started with Chrome DevTools for agents.
When this is the better fit
- Inspect the page that is actually running in Chrome, including console output and runtime state.
- Investigate layout, network, or performance behavior while reproducing a bug.
- Ask an agent to correlate what the user sees with DevTools diagnostics.
This is a DevTools-oriented Chrome workflow. Do not treat it as Playwright’s documented cross-browser selector; Playwright explicitly lists Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge, while the Chrome documentation describes Chrome access.

Live access changes the trust model
Google warns: “This allows your agent to read, inspect, debug, and modify any data in the browser or DevTools.” Connect only a profile and pages that the agent is meant to access. A separate development profile prevents unrelated tabs, cookies, saved credentials, and extensions from becoming part of the session.

Security, sessions, and permission boundaries
Treat arbitrary code execution as a separate permission
Playwright documents browser_run_code_unsafe as executing arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and describes it as RCE-equivalent. Enable it only for a trusted MCP client and a controlled environment: Playwright MCP security guidance. Prefer purpose-built tools and narrowly scoped capability groups when they can complete the task.
Choose persistence deliberately
- Persistent profile: preserves login state and cookies for workflows that require an existing session, but also carries data into the run.
- Isolated session: starts clean, reducing accidental access and test contamination, but requires you to authenticate through the workflow if login is needed.
Define an approval boundary
Require confirmation before destructive clicks, account changes, purchases, permission updates, or code execution. Use test accounts and staging data. Keep secrets out of prompts and logs, and revoke temporary credentials after the run.

Practical setup checklist
- Write the task in observable terms: target URL, required actions, expected result, and data that may be touched.
- Choose Playwright MCP for cross-browser automation or test authoring; choose Chrome DevTools for live Chrome diagnostics.
- Create a dedicated browser profile or isolated session.
- Enable only the capability groups required for the task.
- Run a harmless read-only check, such as opening the page and reporting its title.
- Add approvals for state-changing actions and disable unsafe code execution unless it is essential.
- Save generated tests or diagnostic notes only after reviewing selectors, assertions, and sensitive output.
Troubleshooting common failures
The client cannot start the server
Check that Node.js and npx are installed, that the configuration uses valid JSON, and that the client is reading the file you edited. Run the package command directly in a terminal to surface installation or network errors, then restart the MCP client.
The agent cannot find a control
Ask for a fresh accessibility snapshot and refer to the control’s role and accessible name. Check whether the element is inside an iframe, behind a dialog, or rendered only after a wait condition. Avoid coordinate guesses when a semantic reference is available.
A login disappears between runs
You are likely using an isolated session or a different profile. Use a deliberately configured persistent profile for a test account, or authenticate inside each isolated run.
DevTools shows the wrong page
Confirm that the connected Chrome instance is the intended development profile and that the target tab is open. Close unrelated tabs and reconnect rather than granting an agent access to a personal profile.

Generated tests are brittle
Replace text or position-dependent locators with stable roles, labels, or test identifiers. Add assertions that express business outcomes, not merely that a click occurred, and rerun against a clean session.
