McAfee Total Protection for Mac is marketed with real-time, on-demand and scheduled scans, plus firewall protection and WebAdvisor for Mac on McAfee’s US product page. Before installing, check that your macOS version and McAfee build meet the current requirements, then confirm which features and subscription terms apply to your region and plan.
What McAfee Total Protection offers on Mac
McAfee describes three scan modes for its Mac product: continuous real-time scanning, on-demand scans started by the user, and scans scheduled for a chosen time. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results about detection rates or performance. McAfee also lists firewall protection and WebAdvisor for Mac on its US product page. Availability can depend on your operating system and subscription, so verify what your specific plan includes.
McAfee’s product page includes broader subscription and device-protection claims, but that does not establish that every feature works on macOS. Treat the Mac-specific feature list and your plan’s terms as the relevant check, rather than assuming feature parity with Windows or other platforms. See McAfee’s US Mac product page.

McAfee’s Australian consumer support requirements page lists macOS 13.x and later for Total Protection build 4.23 or higher. It also lists a 1 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 1.3 GB of free drive space. These specifications come from that regional page; requirements can differ by product build or locale, so check the current requirements for your market and confirm the build offered to you before installing. Download and install through your purchase route
McAfee directs customers to download through the account or channel where they obtained the product and to follow the live macOS-specific installation instructions. Start by signing in to that account or purchase channel, choose the product for the Mac you intend to protect, and follow the instructions shown for macOS. The available support information does not establish a universal sequence of installer screens or security-permission prompts, so use the current on-screen guidance rather than relying on steps written for another version. Use scanning for different needs
Real-time scanning
McAfee describes real-time scanning as ongoing monitoring while you use the Mac. It is the continuous scan mode in the product’s advertised set.

On-demand scanning
An on-demand scan is one you start when you want the product to check your Mac. It differs from continuous monitoring because it is initiated by you.
Scheduled scanning
A scheduled scan runs at a time you set, rather than waiting for you to start it manually. McAfee’s product page identifies all three modes but does not establish independent detection results or measured performance impact. McAfee’s Mac product description.

Manage the firewall without disrupting your network
McAfee provides firewall controls in its Mac product console. Its support guidance warns that firewall blocking can interfere with printer use or connections to other devices on a local network. If a printer or network device stops working, identify the specific blocked activity and use a short diagnostic change to determine whether the firewall is involved. Restore the protection setting afterward; do not leave the firewall disabled as a workaround. For current console guidance, see McAfee’s firewall instructions for Windows and macOS.
Check WebAdvisor availability for your Mac
McAfee’s US page names WebAdvisor for Mac as a web-protection offering. That is a vendor-listed capability, not a guarantee that it is included in every plan or available on every supported macOS release. Confirm its availability for your subscription and system before relying on it.

Compare subscription terms at checkout
McAfee’s US Mac product page advertises a 30-day trial and includes offer-specific pricing and auto-renewal terms. Those terms are tied to a particular market and offer and can change. Check the checkout page for your country at the time you buy; distinguish any introductory price from the renewal price and review the displayed auto-renewal, cancellation and refund terms.

McAfee describes individual, multi-device and household coverage, but packaging and feature availability may vary. When comparing options, check the number of devices covered, which features work on Mac, the local renewal price and the purchase terms shown at checkout. Do not assume that the feature set advertised for a broader subscription applies identically across operating systems.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
McAfee’s product page states “Over 500 million protected devices and counting,” but gives no publication year for that marketing claim. It should not be treated as a dated Mac-specific statistic or as independent evidence of effectiveness. No dated independent Mac-specific detection statistic, comparative test or efficacy study is established here, so the product descriptions above should be read as McAfee’s own feature claims, not a third-party verdict.
