Not necessarily. If one subscription includes the antivirus, scam-detection and VPN features you want, you may not need three separate subscriptions. But the right answer depends on the exact plan, how many devices you need to cover and what you already use. McAfee’s current U.S. consumer-plan page lists all three categories, but features and device limits vary by tier.
What do antivirus, scam protection and a VPN each do?
Antivirus and security software
Security software helps detect and remove malware. It is one layer of protection, not a guarantee against every threat. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises installing security software from a reliable company, setting it to update automatically, and keeping your operating system and browser updated. FTC: Protect Your Computer from Malware
Scam detection
Scam-detection features are intended to help identify suspicious messages, links or websites. They do not make every scam detectable or replace careful judgment. In particular, a padlock or encrypted connection does not prove a site is legitimate: scammers can use encryption too. FTC: Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know
VPN
A VPN routes your internet traffic through an encrypted connection. Whether you need one depends on your privacy needs and circumstances; it is not a substitute for antivirus or scam awareness. The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites now use encryption, so using public Wi-Fi alone does not make a VPN automatically necessary. FTC: Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What does McAfee list in its U.S. consumer plans?
McAfee’s U.S. plan page describes a mix of antivirus, Scam Detector, Secure VPN, identity monitoring, web protection and privacy features. Its comparison shows Essential, Premium and Advanced tiers, with differences in device limits and in some privacy, identity and cleanup features. Check the exact tier rather than assuming every plan includes every feature. McAfee consumer plans
These are features as described by McAfee, not independent performance findings. The page’s prices are introductory first-term offers for new customers; plan names, offers, availability and renewal amounts can change. Check the current country-specific checkout and renewal terms before deciding. Identity monitoring and theft-coverage terms also depend on the plan; monitoring does not prevent identity theft, and a displayed coverage maximum should not be treated as a guaranteed payment to every subscriber.

When might one plan be enough?
A bundle may be a practical fit if the exact tier covers the number of devices you use and includes the functions you want, while avoiding overlap with subscriptions or built-in protections you already have. Compare the bundle with separate tools on the features you will actually use—not just the number of items in the plan description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm that the selected tier includes antivirus, scam-detection and VPN features you want.
- Check the device limit against your household’s actual devices and users.
- Account for security software or subscriptions you already have to avoid paying twice for similar functions.
- Check whether the privacy, identity-monitoring or cleanup features you want are included in that tier.
- Compare the current introductory and renewal prices for your country, not just the first-term offer.
- Read the applicable identity and coverage terms, including eligibility, limitations and claims procedures.
This is a feature-and-cost comparison, not a performance ranking: the available plan information does not establish that a bundle’s components perform like every standalone product.
