max-image-preview:large is a robots directive that gives search engines permission to use a large image preview for a page. In Google’s definition, “large” permits a preview up to the width of the viewport; it does not guarantee that a preview will appear, that a particular image will be selected, or that the largest rendering will be used.
What max-image-preview:large means
The directive sets the maximum image-preview size a search engine may use when representing a page. Google defines three values: none, standard and large. With large, a larger preview—up to the viewport width—may be shown across Google result surfaces. The word “may” matters: search systems still decide whether to show an image, which image to use and how large it should render.
This is a permission limit, not an image-ranking or image-generation command. It does not create a thumbnail, improve the source image, make a page eligible for every visual feature, or override crawl restrictions. The page containing the directive and the images you want used must remain accessible to crawlers.

A separate, more specific publisher permission—such as qualifying structured data or a licensing agreement—can allow uses that are not interrupted by this setting. The directive still governs the maximum preview limit where it applies.

How to add it with an HTML meta tag
Place this element inside the page’s <head>:

- Use a valid
<meta name="robots">element in the document head. - Keep the directive on the page whose previews you want to control; placing it on an unrelated page has no effect on that URL.
- Do not block crawlers from fetching the HTML containing the directive. A crawler that cannot access the page cannot reliably read and follow the setting.
- Check that the image itself is crawlable and returns a successful response. A preview directive cannot make a blocked, missing or inaccessible image usable.
How to send it with an HTTP response header
For HTML responses—and for cases where editing the document head is inconvenient—send the equivalent X-Robots-Tag header:
X-Robots-Tag: max-image-preview:largeThe header is page-level metadata. Configure it at your web server, reverse proxy or application layer, then verify the final response rather than only a configuration file. Redirects, caches and multiple headers can otherwise make the crawler receive a different result than expected.
When a header is useful
- Server-rendered templates are controlled centrally.
- Pages are generated without a convenient HTML head hook.
- You need a consistent policy across many routes.
- You want to apply robots metadata before a response body is generated.
Meta tag versus header
Both forms express the same page-level directive. Choose one policy path that your team can audit. If both are present, keep their values consistent; conflicting controls make diagnosis harder and can produce a more restrictive outcome than intended.

WordPress implementation
WordPress provides wp_robots_max_image_preview_large(), a helper that adds max-image-preview:large when the site is public. The developer reference lists this function as introduced in WordPress 5.7.0.
On a standard public WordPress installation, inspect the rendered source of a published page for a robots meta element. If a theme or plugin replaces the robots filter, confirm that the final HTML still contains the directive. A private, discouraged or otherwise non-public site may not emit the helper’s output, so test the production visibility state rather than relying on an editor preview.
Does it force Google to show a large image?
No. Google’s wording is that a larger image preview “may be shown.” The directive only raises the maximum permitted preview size. Google can choose a smaller rendering, show no image, select another eligible image, or present a different result format. Eligibility also depends on crawlability, page quality, image accessibility and Google’s own presentation systems.
What it can change
- It removes the publisher’s own limit against a larger preview.
- It permits a preview up to viewport width where Google’s systems choose to use one.
- It applies across Google Web Search, Google Images, Discover, Assistant and other listed result formats.
What it cannot change
- It cannot guarantee inclusion in a search result or visual feature.
- It cannot force a particular source image or crop.
- It cannot bypass robots blocking, authentication, broken URLs or inaccessible resources.
- It cannot require the largest rendering on every device or query.
Does Bing support max-image-preview?
Bing documents support for the robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag. Its description of large allows a standard or large optimized image. Bing’s presentation remains its own decision, so using the directive is permission rather than a promise of a particular result.

If Google and Bing are both important, use the same valid directive in the HTML or response header and test each crawler’s received response. Keep other controls—such as snippet limits—explicit so one engine’s interpretation does not surprise you.
Verification and troubleshooting
The directive is missing from rendered HTML
Cause: A theme, template, caching layer or SEO plugin removed or replaced it. Fix: fetch the public URL, inspect the final <head>, and check the response headers. Correct the component that generates the production response, then purge relevant caches.
A crawler cannot see the directive
Cause: The page is blocked by access control, a robots rule, a failed redirect or a response that never completes. Fix: make the page publicly fetchable, ensure redirects end at the intended canonical URL, and verify that the final HTML contains the meta tag or the final response contains X-Robots-Tag.
The page still shows a small or no image preview
Cause: The directive is only a maximum; search engines retain presentation discretion. Other causes include an unavailable image, unsuitable page content or a result format that does not use the larger treatment. Fix: confirm crawlability and image delivery, but do not treat a smaller result as proof that the directive failed.

Google and Bing appear inconsistent
Cause: They use different systems and can choose different layouts. Fix: verify the same URL, metadata and image response for each crawler, then evaluate each engine separately.
A plugin emits a conflicting value
Cause: One layer outputs none or standard while another outputs large. Fix: search the final source and headers for every robots declaration, remove the unwanted layer and retest after cache invalidation.
