Neither matte nor glossy phone displays are always easier to read outdoors. A matte surface diffuses reflections, making reflected objects less mirror-like, but it can add haze or soften the image. A glossy surface can look clearer while showing sharper reflections. The best result depends on the phone’s brightness, reflection handling, viewing angle, and the finish on the screen itself.
What matte and glossy mean for outdoor readability
Matte and glossy describe how a screen surface handles light; they do not describe the display’s brightness or overall quality. As a general surface principle, matte treatments scatter reflected light across a broader area. That can make a reflected bright source or object less distinct, but the scattered light may appear as haze, grain, or reduced sharpness. Glossy surfaces tend to return reflections more directly, so they can preserve a clearer-looking image while making reflections more recognizable.
This explanation is based on monitor-focused guidance from RTINGS, not a controlled comparison of phone screens. The same basic optical tradeoff is useful for understanding finishes, but it does not establish which finish wins on a particular phone.
Why there is no universal winner for phones
Outdoor readability depends on both the light coming from the display and the ambient light reflected by its cover glass. A bright screen may remain legible despite reflections; a less reflective surface may help in one position but still look washed out when light reaches it from another direction. Moving or tilting the phone can also change what is reflected into your eyes.

DXOMARK says its smartphone display evaluation includes sunlight use, but its description does not provide a matte-versus-glossy phone result: DXOMARK’s display test overview. The available evidence does not establish a controlled outdoor test comparing matte and glossy smartphones, so a blanket claim that one finish is easier to read would go beyond what has been measured here.
Matte anti-glare and anti-reflective treatments are different
Anti-glare treatments scatter light at the surface; anti-reflective treatments aim to reduce the amount of light reflected from the cover glass. They address related problems through different optical approaches, and a product treatment can combine them. Corning describes its surface-treatment approach in its Gorilla Glass Matte Pro announcement.

Corning reported up to 95% reflection reduction and 80% glare reduction for Gorilla Matte Pro in 2025. Those are manufacturer-reported figures for that treatment, not independent results for phones generally or a comparison of matte and glossy phone displays.

In that context, Corning researcher Dr. Odessa Petzold said, “The problem starts with the cover glass on your device,” and that “Light reflects off of the glass which then makes the display appear dark or dull.”

What published reflection figures do—and don’t—tell you
Published measurements can illustrate why cover-glass reflection matters, but figures from one material, product, or device type should not be treated as phone results.

The 2020 reflectance figures are discussed in the Journal of the Society for Information Display article. They are useful context for cover-glass reflection, but the comparison is between tablets, not smartphones.

How to choose a finish for your own phone
If you are comparing phones, judge the whole device in the light where you use it rather than relying on the words “matte” or “glossy.” Check these factors:
- Reflections in your usual outdoor setting: See whether the sky, sun, or nearby objects obscure text, and whether changing the angle helps.
- Outdoor brightness: Consider the screen’s peak brightness and whether it can sustain that brightness; a surface finish alone does not tell you how much light the display emits.
- Clarity: Look for haze, sparkle, grain, and text sharpness, not just how visible reflections are.
- The actual screen surface: Account for the phone’s cover glass, any factory treatment, and any protector installed.
- Viewing angle and repositioning: Check whether a small tilt or change in position makes the screen readable without uncomfortable glare.
Is a matte screen protector worth trying?
A matte anti-glare protector can be a practical experiment if reflections are your main problem. Choose one made for your exact phone model, since dimensions and cutouts need to match. The tradeoff is that scattering light can add haze and reduce clarity. If you value the cleanest-looking image and reflections do not often interfere, a matte film’s clarity cost may not be worthwhile. If mirror-like reflections repeatedly obscure the screen, testing a compatible matte film lets you assess that tradeoff on your own phone and in your normal lighting.
