Use ax.set_xlabel() to add a descriptive x-axis label in Matplotlib. You can style it with text properties, adjust its distance from the plot with labelpad, and control tick labels separately.
Add an x-axis label
Create a figure and Axes, plot your data, then call set_xlabel() on the Axes that should receive the label:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot([1, 2, 3], [2, 4, 3])
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)")
plt.show()The label describes the dimension represented along the x-axis; in this example, it identifies the values as time in seconds. Matplotlib’s Text in Matplotlib documentation describes set_xlabel as the straightforward way to label an axis.

Prefer ax.set_xlabel() when a figure has multiple subplots or when you want to make explicit which Axes is being changed. The Axes and pyplot interfaces are both documented in the Matplotlib Axes API.

Customize the label’s appearance
set_xlabel() accepts text properties, so you can change the size, weight, and color directly:
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)", fontsize="large", fontweight="bold", color="navy")Other text properties, including font family and style, can also be supplied as keyword arguments or through a FontProperties object. See Matplotlib’s text tutorial for the supported text options.

For a label that needs a line break, include n in its string:

Move the label farther from the plot
Use labelpad to set the distance between an axis label and the axes/tick-label area. Its value is measured in points:
ax.set_xlabel("Time (s)", labelpad=12)The default configured value for axes.labelpad is 4 points, but there is no universally suitable spacing for every figure. Matplotlib explains the units and option in its text documentation.

To change horizontal placement, use the label’s loc option where supported by your installed Matplotlib API, or set a position together with horizontal alignment. The vertical coordinate in position does not control the label’s vertical distance; adjust that with labelpad.

The axis label names the dimension, such as “Time (s).” Tick labels are the values or category names shown at individual tick positions. Use set_xlabel() for the descriptive label; changing tick appearance or values requires tick-related methods.

For example, adjust the size and rotation of x-axis tick labels with tick_params():
ax.tick_params(axis="x", labelsize=9, labelrotation=30)This changes the tick labels, not the descriptive x-axis label. To control tick positions or their displayed values, use tick locations and formatters. Although set_xticklabels() exists, Matplotlib’s Axes API discourages using it directly; prefer setting tick positions or formatters when changing tick text. See the Axis ticks guide.
Set defaults and prevent clipping
To apply consistent axis-label styling across plots, configure Matplotlib’s axes.labelsize, axes.labelpad, axes.labelweight, and axes.labelcolor settings through rcParams or a style sheet. The configuration guide documents these settings.

Choose a readable text size and appropriate padding, then inspect the rendered figure at its intended output dimensions to check that the label is not clipped. The right layout adjustment depends on the figure’s axes arrangement and output size.
