Mastodon quote posts are already available, not merely planned. Mastodon announced the feature on September 11, 2025, and Mastodon 4.5 confirmed it in November. Quote permissions are controlled by the original author, but the system is not pre-moderation: an allowed quote is published automatically, and later changes do not erase every copy that already exists.
What a Mastodon quote post does
A quote post creates a new post that references another user’s post while letting you add your own commentary. Choose the quote option from the menu associated with the Boost button when the original author’s policy allows it. The quoted post remains linked to its author rather than being copied as an image or pasted text.
Mastodon’s design goal is discussion and amplification with author-controlled limits. The Mastodon Team cautioned in its September 11, 2025 announcement, “Quoting is a powerful tool, and like any tool, it can be misused.” The team had previously identified out-of-context quoting and directing hate or harassment as risks.

Remote quotes can take time to appear. The other server must support the feature and have the quoted content available, so behavior across Fediverse platforms is not identical.

How to control who may quote your posts
Set a default for new posts
- Open Settings.
- Go to Preferences.
- Open Posting Defaults.
- Choose the quote policy offered by your server: anyone, followers, or only you (quotes disabled).
Mastodon’s user documentation gives the current controls in Quoting other posts. Mastodon 4.4.x placed the default in a different location, so the exact menu can vary on older servers or customized clients.
Override the policy on one post
When composing an individual post, change its quote permission before publishing. This lets a generally permissive account restrict a sensitive post, or lets an account with restrictive defaults permit quoting for a specific announcement. The post-level choice governs future quote attempts for that post.

Understand the three permission levels

Visibility and quote permission work together
A followers-only post cannot be quoted by other users. Mastodon’s implementation policy sets private and direct posts to author-only quoting, regardless of a broader account default. Public visibility is therefore necessary, but it does not by itself guarantee that everyone may quote: the post’s quote policy still applies.
For example, a public post limited to followers can be quoted by a follower, while a public post set to author-only cannot be quoted by anyone. A direct message is not turned into a quotable public item by changing a quote setting.

What happens when someone quotes you
If your policy permits a quote, Mastodon accepts it automatically; there is no approval queue. You receive a notification when another account quotes your post. From the relevant controls, you can:
- Remove your post from that quote, so the quote no longer retains the referenced post.
- Block the quoting account to stop that account from quoting you in the future.
- Change the original post’s quote policy to prevent additional quotes.
These actions are prospective protections, not a universal deletion mechanism. Blocking does not automatically remove an already-published quote, and changing a post’s policy affects future quotes rather than every quote that was previously published. A quote may also have been seen, copied, or discussed elsewhere before you act.

Cross-server limits and compatibility
Mastodon cannot make every Fediverse service enforce the same rules. A remote platform may not support quote posts, may implement different permissions, or may take time to fetch the referenced content. Mastodon documents this federation behavior in its user guide and the technical policy in Implementing quote posts.
That means a quote-control choice is strongest within software that understands Mastodon’s quote policy. It should not be treated as a guarantee that no remote copy, screenshot, or manually reproduced commentary can exist.

Technical constraints when composing a quote
The implementation documentation states that a quote composition cannot include a poll or a media attachment together with the quote. If you need both a quoted reference and an image, video, or poll, publish them as separate posts in a thread or explain the context in text instead.
What Mastodon’s version 5.0 preview changes
In its August 18, 2026 post, 5.0: Laying the foundation, Mastodon showed a redesigned quote-control flow. For public posts, the preview offered a toggle and choices for everyone or followers. Followers-only posts were shown with quoting disabled for other users. Because this was a dated preview, check your instance’s current interface and release notes before assuming those controls are live.
Practical choices for authors
Use “everyone” for open amplification
Select this for public announcements, explainers, or event information where adding commentary and reaching new audiences is the point. Monitor notifications if the subject is contentious.
Use “followers” for bounded discussion
This keeps quoting within accounts that already follow you while preserving the quote format. It is useful when you want conversation without unrestricted redistribution.

Use “author only” for sensitive context
Choose this for personal updates, posts likely to be misread out of context, or material you do not want embedded in another user’s commentary. For maximum audience control, also use followers-only or direct visibility as appropriate.

- Open the quote notification and remove your post from the quote if the reference is being misused.
- Block the account when you do not want further interaction from it.
- Change the original post’s policy if you want to stop additional quotes from any account.
- Report harassment or threats through your server’s normal moderation process; quote controls do not replace moderation.
