Two pointers are coordinated positions in a sequence, not one universal algorithm. Choose opposite ends when order lets you discard candidates, read/write positions when compacting data in place, and window boundaries when the answer concerns a contiguous range. The key to using any of them correctly is to state what remains true after every pointer move.
What the two-pointer technique means
A pointer is an index or reference to an element. In a two-pointer method, two such positions move in a coordinated way to search, compare, transform, or track part of a sequence. They may move toward each other, move in the same direction at different rates, or delimit a changing window. Each arrangement solves a different kind of problem, so the input property and correctness argument matter more than the name of the technique. LeetCode Discuss
How to choose a pointer pattern
| Problem cue | Candidate pattern | Property to verify | Typical task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sorted sequence with a pair or target condition | Opposite ends | Sorted order makes one side safe to discard | Find a pair with a target sum |
| In-place filtering or compaction | Same-direction read/write | The retained prefix is correct, and writes do not overwrite unread input | Remove duplicates |
| Contiguous substring or subarray with a changing constraint | Sliding window | Expansion and shrinkage maintain the constraint logic | Track a range or substring |
| Compare mirrored characters or reverse a sequence | Opposite ends | Comparison or swapping is symmetric | Check a palindrome or reverse elements |
These are common cues, not an exhaustive list of sequence algorithms. A sliding window is often treated as a related pattern of two pointers because its two boundaries move through a sequence together. LeetCode Discuss LeetCode Discuss
Opposite-end pointers: use sorted order to discard candidates
For a pair-sum target in a sorted array, put left at the first element and right at the last. Compare their sum with the target. If it is too small, move left forward; if too large, move right backward. If it matches, report the pair or follow the problem’s required handling for duplicates and output.

The invariant is that every pair discarded by a move cannot satisfy the target. When the sum is too small, the current left value plus even the largest remaining value is too small; any pair using that left value is therefore too small, so it is safe to discard it. When the sum is too large, the current right value plus even the smallest remaining value is too large; any pair using that right value is too large, so it is safe to discard it. This reasoning relies on sorted order, or another property that gives the same monotonic guarantee. LeetCode Discuss
Stop when the pointers meet or cross if no earlier condition has ended the search. If the input is not sorted, these pointer moves are not justified merely because they look symmetric. Sorting first may be an option, but account for its cost and check whether reordering is allowed or whether the required result must retain original indices.

Same-direction pointers: compact without losing unread data
For in-place duplicate removal from a sorted array, use a read pointer to visit each item and a write pointer to mark where the next retained value belongs. The processed prefix up to the write position contains the unique values seen so far. When the read value differs from the last retained value, write it at the next output position and advance the write pointer. Sorted order makes equal values adjacent, so comparing with the last retained value is sufficient.
The compacted result is a valid prefix of the original array. Its length is the meaningful output; values beyond that length may remain in storage and should not be treated as part of the result unless the task says otherwise. The key safety argument is that the write position never advances ahead of the read position, so writing a retained value does not destroy an item that has not yet been read. The exact invariant should be adapted to the particular filtering task. LeetCode Discuss

Sliding windows: track a contiguous range
When a task asks about a contiguous substring or subarray, two pointers can mark the current window’s boundaries. One endpoint expands the window to include new elements; the other advances when needed to restore validity or reduce the range. Maintain the information the constraint needs—such as a sum or frequency counts—and record a candidate answer at the point specified by the problem, often after the window is valid or after shrinking has produced the intended boundary.
There is no safe expand-and-shrink template for every range problem. The update rule must follow from the constraint. For example, reasoning that depends on nonnegative values does not automatically work when negative values are allowed: adding an element can decrease a sum, so shrinking on the basis of an oversized sum may skip a valid range. If the needed monotonic property is absent, choose a different algorithm whose invariant does hold. LeetCode Discuss LeetCode Discuss

A step-by-step way to solve a sequence problem
- Define the output. Decide whether the task asks for a pair, a transformed prefix, a contiguous range, or a yes/no result.
- Identify the useful structure. Check for sorted order, contiguity, symmetry, or an output prefix that can be safely built in place.
- Choose the arrangement. Use opposite ends, same-direction read/write positions, or window boundaries according to that structure.
- State the invariant before coding. Describe what is known about processed, discarded, retained, or currently included elements.
- Justify every branch. For each pointer move, show why it preserves the invariant and cannot skip a valid answer.
- Test boundaries. Check empty and one-element inputs, pointer meeting or crossing, duplicates, and the order of updates at window boundaries.
- Count movement and preprocessing. If each pointer moves only forward or inward and never resets, the scan takes linear time in the sequence length. Include sorting and any auxiliary data structures separately.
How to reason about correctness and complexity
Two-pointer methods are often efficient because each position is visited or passed a limited number of times. The linear-time claim comes from that movement bound, not from a general promise that two pointers are always faster. For a sorted pair search, the scan after sorting is linear; if sorting is required, report its cost separately. For in-place compaction, the read pointer visits the sequence once and the write pointer advances only as values are retained. A sliding window may also be linear when its boundaries move monotonically and its maintained summary can be updated efficiently.
Do not infer a linear solution just from having two indices. If either pointer repeatedly resets, or if updating the window requires scanning its contents, the total cost may be higher. Explain what each pointer does and count those operations.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Moving a pointer without a proof: With opposite-end sum search, unsorted data does not support the discard argument.
- Confusing a compacted prefix with the whole array: Return or use the valid length as required; stale values beyond the prefix are not part of the compacted result.
- Applying a window rule to the wrong inputs: A rule based on nonnegative sums may fail when negative values are permitted.
- Ignoring boundary cases: Ensure the loop condition handles meeting or crossed pointers and does not access an invalid position.
- Omitting preprocessing from complexity: A linear scan after sorting is not the same as a linear total algorithm.
